Top 3 Sorted

Two Questions after todays results. Is the top 3 now done and dusted with it certain to be Central, Glenelg and Sturt in any order? And do people think it's possible to win the premiership from outside the top 3?

pretty set i reckon but we arent half way through the season still.

and yes, someone can win from 4th, but it will be a small miracle.

limited injury and complacency is the key for the bays and blues for sure. the eags and north and norwood can topple any on their day.

Is our 1972 team lining up for the remainder of the season?

Seriously we will be luck to make the 5!

With the top 3 "sorted", is this a better argument for top 4 vs top 5?

Personally I can't see any reason in having a top 5. Most seasons in more recent memory have had the top 2 or 3 go through to the GF.

Is there any need for the top 5 (sorry I think I have hi-jacked your thread!).

PS. I think the Top 3 are sorted, there seems to be a fair jump in grade between Glenelg Sturt and Centrals to the rest (not meaning they can't be beaten on any given day, just that come finals time, the cream will rise to the top).

I don't care it there is a dominant top 3 or not, there is still no need for a top 5 in a 9 team competition. Top 4 is plenty.

Yeh Jimmy, I've seen tons done on this topic previously but it just seemed more relevant to bring it up this season with a more 'set' top 3 (if there can be such a thing this early on).

I know where both you blokes are coming from and I don't necessarily disagree but I think teh beauty of a top 5 is is still gives supporters and players to a lesser degree hope of making the finals. With a top four you run the possibility of the finals race being over by the beginning of August which makes teh final five rds almost irrelevant.

So whilst it rewards mediocrity I say keep it as a final 5 as whilst it doesn't lead to a premiership teams from fifth have been known to push deep into teh fianls to third and even make the GF which makes for a cinderalla story - Norwood 1999.

I'd prefer North to have no chance though. :?

I think the top 3 are sorted - and the bottom 3.

South play the Eagles next week and I expect the Eagles to win putting South into the bottom 3. After 3 wins in a row they have imploded.

That only leaves the middle 3 - North, Norwood and the Eagles fighting for 2 finals spots.

The critical games will be when each of the groups of 3 play each other in determining placements.

I think North are still an outside chance to make the top 3. I know they are not playing well but they should win their next three games against West, South and Port and while that won't get them back into the top 3, I can see them getting back to say only being two games out with about 8 games to go. I'm not saying they will make it, but it only takes one of the top three to slip up one week and it starts to get close. To early to call just yet in my opinion.

Surely Choco and his mate could come up with a system to have a final seven in the SANFL.

With all due respect ca - it would take an unscripted miracle for North to make the top 3. We are 3 games plus 10 percent behind 3rd which is effectively another 2 games - so 5 in total.

So for us to make it we would have to win 5 more games for the remainder of the season than either Sturt or Centrals. There is no way either of those teams will drop 5 games to even give us an outside chance. We will struggle to make the 5 on our present form.

Yeah fair enough, I hadn't thought about percentage just total wins. You put it like that and perhaps it is settled.

The % is only ever worth 1 win - time to get technical

% is only an issue if you finish on the same points. If North finish 2 points higher than say Sturt then they could be 50% behind them and it wouldn't matter

So they would need to win 4 more games than one of the top 3 sides. That really means winning all their remaining games against those sides which is very unlikely as those 3 teams are a class ahead of us IMO

Moreover, if North is competing against Norwood and South for a position in the 5, then percentage becomes irrelevant unless another drawn game happens.

The way Port are going that may need to be a final 8 - or even 9

Yes top 3 is settled but come finals anything can happen.
Norwood 1984
Port 199......

Westies made the gf from Elimination final too in the 80's ?

Port Power will not make the finals so when their AFL players are available it can make a big difference...e.g. Thomas at Norwood is a big influence.

I think 4th and 5th is between Norwood, North and Eagles still a big chance. Forget the rest cant make it.

I wouldn't be ruling Port out yet, they have exactly the same record we had after the Queens Birthday weekend last year and apart from Sturt and Centrals are the toughest side we've come up against this year.

Their current position doesn't truly reflect where they are at as a club IMO.
