Ok, there's been ad-hoc debate on this issue, I'd like to address it without emotion or favour, club by club.
Centrals
Glenelg, North, Port,South, West- No clash of any kind. Home or Away strip suitable
Norwood - Minor clash averted if home strip worn by Norwood
Sturt- Medium clash averetd if home strip worn by either side
WWT- Minor clash averted if away strip worn by WWT
North
Norwood & West- Minor clash averted if home strips are worn by Norwood & West
Glenelg, Port, South, WWT- No clash of any kind. Home or Away strip suitable
Norwood
Central- Minor clash averted if home strip worn by Norwood
Glenelg, Port, Sturt- No clash of any kind. Home or Away strip suitable
North- Medium clash averted if home strip worn by Norwood
South- Major clash averted if away strip worn by Norwood
West- Major clash averted if home strip worn by Norwood & West
WWT- Minor clash averted if either (or both) sides wearing away strip
Port
Central, Glenelg, North, Norwood, South, Sturt, West & WWT- No clash of any kind
South
Central, Glenelg, North, South, Sturt & West- No clash of any kind
Norwood- Major clash averted if Norwood wear away strip
WWT- Minor clash averted if WWT wear away strip
Sturt
Central, Glenelg, North, Norwood, Port, & South- No clash of any kind. Home or Away strip suitable
Central- Medium clash averetd if home strip worn by either side
WWT- Minor clash averted if WWT wear away strip
West

North- Medium clash with away strip. Home strip only.
Norwood- Major clash averted if home strip worn by Norwood & West
WWT

The whole issue of gurnsey clashes gives me the sh!t$...
If the clubs are doing it from a revenue raising point of view then ok. But, if we really believe that we can't tell the difference between a Norwood and Westies guernsey, then we're in trouble...
For how many years have these two teams been playing each other without any issue? If it really was a big issue, something would have been done 50 years ago...
There's not much I ever agree with Eddie Everywhere on but the guernsey issue is one.
As far as I'm concerned there's only one Sturt/Norwood/Glenelg/etc guernsey.

In some cases its definitely revenue raising and I won't begrudge any SANFL team doing that
Clashes HAVE been an issue the whole time - we just never considered there was a solution other than changing the colour of the shorts (which BTW can actually make a clash worse). We just took it for granted that if South played Norwood at home we would what looks like 2 navy-blue and white teams playing each other
When Central and Eagles used to play in their royal blue strips it was terrible.
The SANFL is fortunate with fewer teams that the clashes are less - esp with teams like Sturt and North with unique colours. The AFL is more difficult because of having more teams. Try watching the 1977 GF NM v Collingwood
If you are so tied to the guernsey why no issue with a pair of white shorts? Why? Because it's what we are used to. Same will happen with alternate strips. For the next generation they will expect their favourite team will have > 1 strip and won't think anything of it.
Most other international sports have gotten on top of clashes and ensure teams can be easily picked apart on the field and often it's by making 1 teams mostly white. But in aussie rules we seem to have a lot of trouble with the concept.

I think the whole emotion of the argument is just stupid. I don't love the guernsey of my team. I love the team, the club and the achievements won in that strip. If we wore a completely different strip it would not change my passion for my club. And if another club decided to wear Centrals current guernsey I wouldn't suddenly support them out of loyalty for a jumper!
The truth is there are some small issues, mainly in the AFL, with jumpers being a little too similar. Perhaps discerning them isn't such a big problem, particularly if you know the players and teams well, but for a spectacle point of view and for new supporters (let's not forget we always want more of them) the more we can do to help their enjoyment of the game the better. And if a simple change in the colours of a mere jumper need to be changed to help that I see no reason to stop it.
As for the money issue, I'm very happy for a club to increase their revenue by selling things. As far as I'm concerned a club does not sell it's soul until it's goal shifts away from success. I will always support sponsorship on a jumper, renaming an oval, advertising on and around the ground and any clever marketing tool they can come up with to make money so long as winning remains the ultimate goal.

Your first paragraph echoes my thoughts, Grahaml.

I agree too, the stupid part about it is a lot of clubs have traditionally chopped and changed their guernseys all the time in the history, especially in the early days.
If people are worried about tradition then they'd insist on jumpers constantly changing.
It's only been later in our history that club jumpers have become more static.
I actually enjoy looking forward to a new design each year with the Rugby League teams I follow.
The more the merrier I say!!

Will pick you up on the WWT jumper not clashing with
westies jumper. The last time these two sides played it was a very cold over cast day .Late in the game it was very hard to tell the blue jumper apart from wests .and yes it was that dark.
Other than that yes no clash with wests

if west play norwood in a finals series & they both wear the 'away jumper', it'd be like watching coke v north in the mini league a few years ago all with the same colored jumper

Personally, never really had an issue in all the years we clashed with the Eagles, prior to the canary outfit they now wear. Not to say there were ever issues for the players, I never had an issue with the two outfits.
Agree that if it's for a few bucks, I'm not bothered. When has a white guernsey ever won a flag!

If SANFL sides want to have an away guernsey or a clash guernsey then good luck to them, as long as it is not something that is made binding as a rule on all SANFL clubs I couldent care less what they do!
I dont want to see South have a clash guernsey for the reason that no doubt it would be White with a Blue S A on it and it would most likely look bloody awful as a result.
I do think that sides that do not have White in their colours - West, Norwood, Eagles, Glenelg and Sturt should likewise not ever be required to wear white shorts, rather coloured shorts that dont clash with a colour of the opposition. Coloured shorts were popular in the 1970's and for TV today are an ideal suggestion for clash issues.
I do favor Tradition though that I will freely admit, it is my suggestion that the Panthers and any other side that wants to consider wearing a Heritage Guernsey occassionally to promote the tradition of the club and if that helps them resolve a clash issue in a match well so be it then, South's first guernsey looks like the current Geelong guernsey albeit with a ligher shade of royal blue, so I personally have no problems if they get that out against Norwood if we have to play away to keep it fair between us! I wont cop some hideous Carlton style away guernsey though!

I tend to agree with you, however I would add that I have seen team mates tackle each other in Norwood v West games. There was a classic back in the early 1980s when a West player had the ball, another West player lined him up, tackled him and rode him into the ground. Michael Aish bent down, grabbed the jumper of one of them, and was given a free for holding the ball

On nice bright days, no problems, but on dark wet afternoons or evenings, a Norwood v South or Norwood v West game can be very difficult to watch.
As Wedgie said, some jumpers have altered over time, especially the addition of sponsors logos on the jumper, as well as the SANFL logo, so some jumpers are littered with colours in addition to their basic club colours.
Also, I don't know about others, but my eyes aren't as sharp as they used to be
