Clay Sampson Retires

Postby BJ Ernest » Thu May 22, 2008 4:15 pm

Clay Sampson has retired from playing football and will now focus his energies in an off field role at the Panthers.

I for one always admired his courage and skill, was one of the best players i ever had the pleasure of playing with and will be sorely missed.

Well done on a great career Clay!!

Well done Clay on a good career, not the best football er ever to pull on a boot but forged a football career that most people can only dream about.

Looking forward to seeing him on Snout's Hill supporting the Bays as he used to as a kid...
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

Was a courageous and skillful player and a respected captain of the club, rate him or not his career achievements speaks volumes of how good Clay was. A true Southee who's onfield performances and leadership will be missed, as will his 3 little sons all running about Noarlunga in South number 24 jumpers, good recruits right there.

I saw Clay as a valuable player with the Crows, not valued by some like Shirley and Doughty, but useful and reliable if not a "star".

"Average" players don't kick 6 goals like he did against Melbun.

Average players don't knock their dislocated shoulders back into place and continue to play.

Clay's dedication to South was and is inspirational. He is the ultimate club man. Unfortunately his retirement was not unexpected.

I'd like to say thanks to "Sambo" for his contribution to our club. I would also like to say thank you for his contributions to come.

Well said Spiritof64 8)

A real pity, because he was playing some pretty good footy last year. Top 3 finish in the B+F if i recall.

Well done to Clay on a pretty good career both locally and in the AFL...

Great South Adelaide club man and can now enjoy life after footy, including coaching, and not worry about that bloody shoulder...

Being a Doggies supporter, Nathan Steinberner has been in a very similar position with reoccurring shoulder issues and has had 4 or 5 operations on it. He is now struggling with soft tissue injuries while trying to make a comeback through the reserves. I hope for Nathan's sake that he can comeback and play a few more games for our club and give his fans an opportunity to say goodbye before he finishes up.

Unfortunatley, this is something the Panther fans didn't get to do for their long serving skipper, which is a bit of a shame.

Well done, once again Clay Smapson, on a pretty good career, you've been great for South Adelaide and the SANFL

All the best to him anyway though, hopefully he stays involved at the club in some capacity!

Well Cahill goes on about youth and how young South are , I say rush these kidies in Saturday !! Seriously , have a look at the age of Souths league team , I think you'll find its not taht young .I think its part of Jacks playing it down message .

Having come across Clay within and away from footy circles, I can genuinely say that he is a champion individual, a good family man and a passionate panther who is very well respected by those who know him and have played with him.

He could be the heir apparent to Jack and whilst not being an exceptional player, more often than not it is the consistent players who turn out to be the best coaches.

All the best Clay!

Agree with you Spirit of 64. Not the best player ever we agree, but a South man through and through. Good luck to him in retirement. Saw him dislocate his shoulder and continue to play-
thats courage.
