The ump certainly went up to Clayton (who was involved in a number of gutless off-the-ball incidents during the day) and looked at his number but I never actually saw him get the book out. I assumed he was reported though.

A scrappy, tight game in which Sturt were never really threatened despite being under pressure all day. It's great to have been challenged on a wet day and come away with a win. Our wins this year have been pretty cruisy and we haven't looked too good when actually under pressure. Skill error cost the Maggies with better players being Summerton, Clayton, Dolling and Murray. DePasquale must have done OK tagging Crane who was barely sighted until the last quarter.

But Sarge absolutely dominated today - very mobile with lots of small team things to go with his 5 or 6 goals. Sharples would have AFL scouts on his doorstep with his flashiness and I hope he does get a state guernsey - he tries to do too much sometimes but he is going to be a very exciting prospect. Paynter looks like he's going to be something too - kept Wilson pretty quiet later in the game. Better games from McGlone and Cubillo (about time!) and I don't think DeLuca will be pushing Angus Kurtze out anytime soon. Nelson is starting to find form and fitness, Coady looked dangerous and Wicks has been a revelation since coming back.

Ressies had a massive win today too.

Good to get the win but still don't feel we're playing footy that would be good enough to win against a Central or Glenelg. There's a few players I can't figure out... Johncock, Cubillo and Fittock are all still question marks for me. There were numerous times in the first half when I thought the intensity shown by these players for the ball was pretty lacklustre. Numerous skill errors by a number of players (eg. Gum, McGlone) who shouldn't be making those types of mistakes. Having said that, I still think those two players contributed well.

Coad's looking great, Sharples was a real livewire, Perrie fantastic and I think Kurtze is developing well (would rather have him in the side than Deluca). Good efforts by Whiteman, Nelson and McLeay.

Lucky Port couldn't kick straight in the first quarter though or the result could have been quite different.

I agree, Paynter seems to have a lot going for him. Passion for the double blue guernsey has obviously been passed on to him from his old man and is he a spitting image or what?!

Looks like we were a bit lucky with Port's kicking in the first quarter.
Still, from what little I know about the game there are a couple of positives. One being that was our narrowest victory for the year, the point here is that we won in spite of the fact we were threatened. A good experience in my opinion as all our other wins have been barnstormers, with sweet FA to worry about about in the final quarter. I read that early on today Port were applying the type of game that Glenelg and the Eagles both used against us. Instead of being controlled and finally squeezed out, we answered and won it.
Good to read that Perrie had a good game. What was up with Chambo? Didn't get his usual bag of goals today.
What is the story with Port though? I don't think I have ever seen a side sitting second bottom after round 8 with a % of over 50. I am thinking they are a better side than their placing suggests, but good sides finish games off. So what sort of side are they?
Now for the infamous 23 day break, which will carry that "just beaten Port" atmosphere, so at least I'll have an extra skip in my step for the next three weeks until we play again.

I really hope that after the long break, blokes like Herring and Gregory can find their way back into the side. Gregory should be fit by then and hopefully Herring can find some touch on the track.

Herring is a shoe in to replace Johncock next game.

Jimmy, Herring kicked 5 in the 2's, and Deluca was in the best again, no mention of Gregory but I can't understand why he's not getting a game in the seniors we'll need him soon, maybe leaving it till after the break, Plant was also in the best for the 2's.
Port need to get some discipline I'm sure Tim wouldn't be overly happy with the effort by some of his senior players today.

Once again skill errors cost us.Poor skills and a lack of options up forward coupled with poor midfield defensive action leave us languishing...never been so happy to have West and South in the comp...

I think it's more what's going on between his ears. He has the size and I've seen him display the skills in the 2's. Would expect he will be dropped for the next game though...

gregory wont get a game in a long time, hes not in good form, there not just going to put him up because he played good football last year, at the moment he is struggling to keep down the 2s forward pocket let alone a league full forward, plant was good yesterday but still needs to improve, we all no how good gregory is but he isnt showing it at the moment, 2 guaranteed ins will be deluca maybe for kurtze or they might play them both an feast, and herring is a shoe in for johncock.
