I don't expect this game to be the blow-out everyone is thinking. Surely West won't play as bad a game as they did against Sturt again, especially on there home turf.
And from a Central point of view we are definatly not firing at the moment and Lairdy has been throwing players around in different positions, so the structure is not quite right yet. Though i think we will have way to much class for them and win by between 35-45 points

Hey Fellow Footy Fans,

A few disheartened Westies fans are understandibly frustrated and asking the kind of things they should be asking. Under the quote below was my opinion only, what to Westies fans think ? Do you agree ?

45 goals
5 matches
9 average per game , not good enough !!!

And CUPIDO is still a defender as well

When will WA win its first game in 2008 ?
RD 9 V SA at home maybe, not this week ?

Stranger things have happenned footy fans...

First win for the year could come this week at home against the Dogs, unlikely admitted, but you never never know...

Interesting to read in today Advertiser that Andy Collins had already made the tough decision and thinking about his playing list for 2009 only 7 rounds into 2008 !!?? It's sad for Bloods fans, I guess after a bit of success in early 2000's, including the LEague GF in '03, they have been pretty lonely at the foot of the table for the last few years now. I'm sure ALL West Adelaide fans are sick and tired of winning wooding spoons, I know I would be, of course...

I would think the club wouldn't have had any unrealistic expectations of a hugely succesful 2008 with all the new faces coming in, but no doubt they would have never imagined it to be this bad to date and would be having horrible cases of dejavu. Some say they have probably been worst hit in terms of young talent being drafted into the AFL but it just seems that every year they don't recruit a quality FULL FORWARD who can give them a focal point for all the decent on ballers they recruit instead, giving them an option to find when coming out if defence and the through the middle. Although some fans are pleading for Cupido to play up forward, I don't think he is the complete answer to kick more than 9 goals and finally win a game. I rate Cupido and think that he is playing in defence more out of neccessity rather than by the coach's choice.

Think about it, the last time the Bloods were winning a few comes consistantly was when they had BIG ex Crow Adam Richardson and then also Daniel Bradshaw's brother (sorry, his first name escapes me right now). I think Westies get bagged a bit too much for not showing faith in their youth but I guess to a degree they probably recruit heavily as insurance in case they end up losing the young lads to the draft, as proven in the past. I'm not putting my point of view across because I'm some Doggies fan gloating in all our recent success, more so to the fact that we kind of know the feeling having had our fair share of lean times, as all clubs do. I guess it also depends on the quality of the recruit you bring over as well and of course, there are plenty of examples from the Doggies where they have attributed to our success. Every team will go through tough times in the bottom half of the competition, I guess some just for longer periods of times than others. Look at the Double Blues for example, it can only get better from here for Westies fans, I know it's tough, but your time will come, eventually. (I hope so)

In saying that though, I'm sorry, but I really hope we pump you guys this week as we probably need a real dominant kind of game for 4 quarters to increase our confidence a little further. I just think we need to go into this game though, a little cautious of the wounded Bloods, no doubt the boys would be embarrased (you would hope) by their performance on the weekend and will certainly come out with a lot more fire in the belly. I guess that all well and good but you have to have the quality to go with that as well to get a result and of course no disrespect, I just think the Dogs have superior class and skill pretty much across the whole ground. My tip would be Centrals by 45 - 60 points but depends on the weather as well, might be a bit tighter if the predicted showers do come on Saturday.

A good post Big Phil....nice to see some positive comments which are true and fair instead of some supporters forgetting when their team was down in the gutter for lengthy periods...not so much here but there were a few (and i say few) Sturt supporters at Unley on Saturday that needed reminding.
Yes, we are frustrated and we can't go on blaming the draft as other clubs lose them also. It comes back to who doe's the recruiting and questions must be asked as to why Westies have been so poor at it the last 2 -3 years.
Anyway Centrals should win comfortably, too big, strong and definitely a much more skill full side. Hopefully West will come out with fire in the belly and at least show some competitiveness.

Good post Phil

IIRC WAFC have tried quite a few times to recruit a FF. But the good forwards always go else where and amazingly enough we do not have enough room in our salary cap to quote the extra required to get them. EG I have been told that a number of them have taken a bit less at other clubs, probably because of the much higher chance of success.

This year we turned to the best FF in the Sunrasia league who signed arrived had a cry and went home!

Too many are getting paid too much to do too little at Westies! (sounds like a new club song)

Problem is to get anyone to the club you have to pay above the realistic asking price and hope they prove their money or rely on hopefulls from much lesser leagues eg Sunrasia, Wagga area etc.

We just don't have the quantity of juniors coming through that you would imagine having had a bit of junior success only a couple of years ago. Well the fact was that almost our entire U19's were 19 and as posted by someone else previously that 19yo in U19 almost never make league.

Perhaps it is our fault for not streamlining the promising jnrs early enough, but when we do eg Cooney and Co they get drafted LOL!

As a club we need to let the new off field crew settle in, remember the last lot had quite a few decades for 1 flag.

CENTRAL DISTRICT FOOTBALL CLUB LEAGUE SQUAD
SATURDAY 17th MAY 2008 Vs WEST @ BROADSPECTRUM OVAL

Full Forward: Luke Cowan, Daniel Havelberg, Elijah Ware
Half Forwards: Chad O'Sullivan, Heath Lawry, Trent Goodrem
Centre Line: Paul Thomas, James Gowans, Leigh Westhoff
Half Backs: Adam Switala, Daniel Schell, Ryan Williams
Full Backs: Andrew Hayes, Yves Sibenaler, Richard Cochrane

Rucks: Jonathon Giles, Luke McCabe, Matthew Slade

Interchange (from): Jason Mackenzie, Scott Dutschke, Cameron Faulkner & Brayden O'Hara

Interesting to see O'Hara named on the bench, I am assuming someone is doubtful to start. Starting to settle into a pretty good line up with Chris Gowans and Ian Callinan 2 notable exceptions.

Great to see Brayden O'Hara's consistancy in the reserves MIGHT be rewarded with his League debut ? Unless there is an injury cloud over a player similar to his stature, I'm really not sure whether he will actually play on the main game. Scott Dutschke and Cam Faulkner have certainly done enough, in my opinion, to hold there spots. Maybe Trent Goodrem could get some form back in the twos but he would be a little unlucky to get dropped.

O'Hara might be a chance to come in if it is wet, he is that smallish crumber or on baller and could even play off a half back flank. I suppose, with all due respect, it is only Westies we are playing and selectors could afford to rest an older player if they see any benefit, to give O'Hara his debut ?
Will just have to wait until 11.15am on Saturday to see if he runs out with the magoos. Good luck to him if he does get his chance, as mentioned, he defiantley is deserving of a chance, at least.
