Disgrace of the Sturt Football Club

Postby Footy Smart » Sat May 10, 2008 6:44 pm

I am a Sturt supporter through and through and was appalled by what my mother told me today. She was at the game to day against westies and was sitting on family near the play ground. A fight had broken out amongst the Sturt cheer squad which included someone on the ground being kicked. The member of the cheer squad then fought the security into the family area and the lack of police was made apparent as it took 10 minutes for them to arrest the man. All this aside I was even more appalled to hear that the cheer squad started a chant to the effect "westies are sh*t” this is not acceptable and should not be tolerated by the Sturt football club. 1 the lack of police present at Unley Oval and 2 the feral mob that call themselves the sturt cheer squad.

I admittedly have not been able to get to many games due to playing commitments but I would like to ask anyone at the game if they have a point of view. I am willing to take this further with the club if I find enough support for what I have been told.

It seems to me that quite a few of these kind of incidents seem to be making their way into the news.
Is this kind of thing becoming more regular or is it just that is is more news worthy. I woul dbe interested to hear opinions from those who go regularly.

I always though how great it iis to see fans from all clubs mixing together and personally neve experienced any trouble when I was going to SANFL games, but just recently it seems to be a bit different.

Evan last years GF there was a bit of trouble just behind where I was sat. Not of the scale described here but nevertheless, something I was suprised to see.

Ah, well that is good to hear. Great advert for the game to see all those different colours mixing together. Especially like last year at the GF when there were 2 or 3 games on with different clubs,

Probably hasn't been an increase, just that we hear more about it these days because of the internet. If we had this wonderful news spreader for the masses back twenty years ago I could have reported some great stories.
There has been a few this year though. I was thinking of making a "dickhead" thread as testimony to the wankers that have made themselves known at football grounds this year. But I think it would probably just end up as a slanging match. But I just want to say the stuff I read about the disrespect shown to the Diggers on Anzac Day, really got my goat, as well as the moron who chanted his club's name throughout the minute's silence  .

This latest one sounds pretty bad though. Sounds as though there are some cowards about if what we have read is true. And abusing the opposition when your side is well on top is also cowardly IMO.

Gee, Sturt are getting a cracker of a reputation this year.

Elements of the Sturt crowd at Noarlunga this year were a utter disgrace to the game.

They are doing themselfs and the promotion of the SANFL no justice at all. :(
Is out of change.....thanks Cambridge Clarrie!!!

Yeah I know the Sturt Football Club is embarrased by a very small element of its supporter base. Any information the club could get to weed out this disgraceful section of the club would be appreciated. So as Jimmy suggested let the club know.

As a SANFL follower can I reiterate to the Sturt supporters on this site we know that behaviour is not generally reflective of the Sturt Football Club.
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

If the idiot concerned was stupid enough to fight against the security, then I hope that both assualt charges are laid against him as well as a civil action from the security company. No one should have to put up with that as their employment and I hope they make it cost this guy a lot of money.

As for the "Westies are S**t" chant goes, whatever, no doubt what goes around comes around!

Honestly, how many incidents are the Sturt cheer squad gonna be involved in before they get told that enough is enough?

I missed the start of the incident but when I went past (looking for my kids who did the bolt) two coppers were wrestling with him with two others watching closely. That soon changed to 4 coppers wrestling with him and they were not being nice. But the main thing that stood out to me is that the crowd around (at least 90% Sturt) were giving this bloke a hard time and were definitely on the cops side.

We all have wayward supporters and I don't think that the average SANFL supporter holds it against clubs like SFC.

We had this fat old idiot in front of us today who after every Sturt goal in the second half, was getting out of his chair and yelling "West Adelaide, the best bottom team in the league" (well mathematically he is correct).

He was being such a wanker that the other Sturt fans around us were noticeably embarrassed by him, to the point we had a couple of supporters come up and apologize for him after the game.

If our performance today had not been so blood suckingly awful I probably would have given him the serve he deserved, but we were so bad today I just didn't have it in me

Seriously..

How many effing times?

Can someone explain to me how the three or four hard core imbeciles that are always behind this are allowed to go to the footy every week?

Hopefully this can be sorted out, as the Sturt cheersquad seems to one of the larger ones and provides plenty of colour like the cheersquads of previous years. However, every year there is at least one story like this. Surely there is a leader of som sort who can keep other members in line?

Intersting comments from Footy Smart. I will state this quite clearly - the SFC Cheersquad has an intersting mix, they are loud, colourful and passionate. They are also no angels. I was there at Unley and was on the " playground " side for the first hlaf and there was no incident at all . In fact I did notice police prsesnt around that area and obviously so were security.

Whilst walking around at the start of the game I did hear a lot of banter between some West supporters( a few flags so I assume their cheersquad) and Sturt supporters. Lets say the Westies supporters were quite frank in their comments. I certainly did not see any incident and would have thought there would have been a rush of police & security for all to see if this was the case.

I sincerely hope it is not true cos the Sturt Cheersquad is easliy the biggest and most colourful in the league and it would be a shame to lose that.

As for your comments Southee , I remember your last thread when we played you and I must say mate , it's football banter, happens in the crowd. I was on the hill that day and heard exactly what you were talking about , but gee if thats the worst you have heard mate start following Badminton .

Sounds like the same bloke Rushby

OCT was the second half, playground end and I think there is enough witnesses to prove it happened. Me being one.

So what are you suggesting?

Well maybe you should have. With all due respects to Westies & South it is hard to " have a go " at you guys cos you have been historically a lower team. So that bloke needs to relax.

Bosvit I am not suggesting anything mate by the time I had typed it there were a few responses. Not the quickest typist going around !!

I take your word for it ( amd pthers)and think it is bloody disgraceful. I didn't want to jump at conclusions cos some deliberately say things to cause trouble . I hope he gets what he deserves and got what he deserved. Seeya mate and dont come back.

My answer is for the Sturt hierachy ( Stuart Totham & Co) is to show their faces to the cheers squad during the game. Get them on side and start showing them the way about how the club expects a supporter group to behave. Otherwise I bet I could get 50 kids to wave the flags with parental support.

Grow up you mob.

Bosvit and others I am sorry you had such a disgraceful experience.Ring the club.
