Glenelg v Central Rd 6 2008 Review

Postby Wedgie » Sun May 04, 2008 5:56 pm

Final Scores:

Glenelg 13.15
Central 13.12

Glenelg also won the ressies with lots of late goals.

Today's league game was great, fantastic weather, great crowd and great skills and physical clashes on show.
Both sides will take a lot out of that game as Central looked sluggish in the first half and had 3 of their best players out but still managed to control most of the 2nd half before valiantly losing by 3 points.

Geez the Bays play a great brand of footy, I really enjoy watching them play at the Bay, they'll flog North next Saturday.

Good pic Wedgie - the only thing stopping it from being award winning (possibly) is that you can't see the faces of the two protagonists (Grima and his Centrals' opponent), which is obviously not your fault.

Really good pic - I wish I could take as good action shots.

Great day of footy - great skills from both sides, most of the day.

Dogs first quarter in particular wasn't up to scratch, poor use of the wind, followed up by a very slow second term.

Third quarter took a while to kick off, but the dogs fired up in a 15 minute burst of irresistable footy, the kind we are used to. The final quarter was an arm wrestle, with both sides grabbing the ascendancy at various times, the bays in front when it mattered. Dogs were lucky to be close enough to challenge at the end, a few mistakes that the Bays didn't capitalise well enough on helped us out in that regard.

Dutschke best for the dogs, getting in there and doing the hard things he does best. Notable players were Ware in his first game for the season, Lawry had a great final term and Schell looked great up forward. I've probably forgotten a few others, apologies to them. McCabe will also be better for the run, looked OK given he has had a year out of footy.

Adding Callinan, C. Gowans & Thomas back to that side will only improve us.

The bays played a very similar brand of footy to the dogs, they like it hard* - the way that should see them travel deeper* into the finals than last year. Looking forward to reading the thoughts of the tiger faithful on the game.

Good to meet Jabber as well!

Looking forward to playing a resurgent Eagles side next week.

I think the Wedgemeister summed it up well in saying that both sides could take a lot out of today's game. For Glenelg the two points will be very handy. Congratulations to them and their supporters on that. For Central, getting within three points of Glenelg at Glenelg Oval with three of our best out was a pretty reasonable performance. Add Chris Gowans, Paul Thomas and Ian Callinan to that side and it becomes a 5-10 goal better side. My one concern was the loss of Charles Slattery with what appeared to be a serious knee injury.
Glenelg certainly have a strong marking forward division with players like Grima, McConnell and Duldig up there. Their onball squad is also good with Fisher, Backwell, Allen and Cranston. However, having predicted that they would play in the Grand Final this year I am now not so sure. A good side would have buried Central today after our slow start and with the withdrawals from our starting lineup.
As a footnote, just wondering if someone could explain which Glenelg player touched Dutschke's 'goal' in the first quarter. I had the binoculars on it and he picked the ball up to the right of the pack and threw it onto his boot with no Glenelg player on that side of the body. Yet the umpire claimed it was touched off the boot. Am still bewildered about that one.
Cheers

I thought it was Goodrem, Proudy?

Great game to watch, and a top crowd at the Bay. I suspect these two sides will go deep into the season. Congatulations to the Bays, and to Schell on an awesome display to get us back into it in the third.

Great post. Great game. Was not confident when I rocked up 5 minutes before the game and saw Callinan all suited up. He said his knee is sore and he will probably miss a fortnight.

Yet again poor kicking at goal cost us. Noodles I love ya but missed a couple of sitters. Umpiring was great apart from the inconsistency with the hands in the back. Do not know if it was just me but alot of minor nudges got penalised whilst the obvious pushes got let go. It all evened out at the end of the day.

For the dogs Hayes was great all day as was Williams who I thought played his best game for the club.Dutschke brilliance flashed in and out all game. Whilst Schell Noodles & Buckets J.Gowans were instrumental in the dogs seven goal third quarter.

Well played bays.

Likewise smaccer !

Great game of tough, tight contested footy. It was a beautiful day at the Bay, and the crowd was very good.

Central fought back superbly in the third, and the Doggies mate I was standing with was feeling optimistic, but
Glenelg steadied and had the better legs in the last.

Best for the Bays IMO, Bode & Fish. Though Grima did well also.

Looking forward to North next week...

Give credit where credit is due. Grima was the match winner for the bays at the end of the day. Special mention to Richie Cochrane aswell. His second half was outstanding.

Summed up the day pretty well there Bulldgoproud...

Three dissapointing things for me out of today down at Challenge Recruitment Oval...

- The reserves having 10 goals to 2 kicked on them in the last quarter to lose the game after dominating it for 3 quarters and at one stage leading by us much as 43 points from memory. Not good enough for 4 quarters by the boys in the early game.

- The injury to Charles Slattery which i thought at first might have been a reaccurance of his bad ankle injury from last year. Just hope it is not a serious knee issue as mentioned above. Hopefully someone from the club with some inside information may shed some more light on it ?

- And of course, the loss by the League team. As much as it was a tough fighting effort from a slightly undermanned team, I don't like losing any game, naturally. There was some good signs throughout the game but like the reserves, not playing 4 consistant quarters cost us in the end.

Just on your point with on the so called "touched" kick on goal from Dutschke, I actually thought it was Trent Goodrem but am happy to be told otherwise. If it wasn't actually touched then you COULD say that the decision actually cost the Dogs the game. Of course, I'm not going to get up on my high horse and cry bloody murder but I ask the question as to whether the umpire who made the decsion in question actually did hear / see the touch off the boot HIMSELF or was the man in white convinced to make te call by a Glenelg player who made a bit of fuss claiming he touched it, influencing the umpire to make the call that he did ?

Interesting topic, but like I say, I don't have any sour grapes to the umpires, who for once I thought weren't actually too bad. A bit ticky touch wood at times but finally consistant for both teams on the playing field. They must have listened to one of my favouite catch cries I yell out to them on a regular basis as they run past me on the outer wing during their pre game warm ups. I kindly make a simple suggestion to them which has actually had a few chuckles and rise smiles back at me from a few of the men in white in games gone by. Some of you have probably heard me scream out before: "HEY UMPIES, IF YOU'RE GONNA BE SHIT TODAY, PLEASE BE CONSISTANTLY SHIT". I thought they let the game flow reasonably well today and paid the free kicks when they were there. Of course, like every week there were a few soft or confusing frees paid but it went both ways (as I suggested for them to do !!??) in the end.

At the end of the day the game wasn't decided or influenced by poor officiating and IMHO, despite my team not winning, it was a tough, free flowing, exciting game by two quality teams that was put on display and I really enjoyed the game from a spectators point of view. With a beautiful day and a resonable crowd down at the Bay today, it was a great spectactle on offer and a real showcase game on display from our great SANFL competition. I'll have more details on the two games themselves later tonight when I finalise my game reviews of both the league and reserves clashes.

In closing, with 3 quality players in Callinan, Thomas and C.Gowans to come back into the line up, we now just have to move onto next weeks Rivalary Round battle with the Eagles under lights at Hamra Homes Oval. We will be better for the loss and as mentioned on other posts before, seem to be showing more and more improvement on a weekly basis. Obviously we need to get the mix right sooner rather than later to win games regularly but with the quality of players mentioned above to come back in, I reckon we will have a pretty strong team to tackle the ressurgant Eagles next week. I think today's game just highlights how competitive this years competition has and will be for 2008.

Maybe this is the beginning of the end of Doggie absolute dominance.

Even the doggie fans seem to have lost that absolute fire in the belly that has made them so formidable this decade. Not saying you will miss the top 3 or anything but you all seem a bit nice about it. Is that how the boys are playing this year? A bit nice?

Must be hard to keep that desire, not something I have had to endure myself being a bloods man......

Bosvit, it is not that. It is just that we have the confidence that the boys will still be there at season end so there is nothing to worry about. Glenelg have been touted as Premiership Favourite after their disposal of Sturt last week. Many pundits expected Central to lose by 5-10 goals today, particularly with the loss of Chris Gowans, Ian Callinan and Paul Thomas. The fact we only lost by 3 points (despite playing a shocker of a first quarter) has us quietly confident at this stage. We have made slow starts to the season in a number of our premiership years so we still think the boys will be around the mark come finals time. Personally, I do not think there is much to separate any of Glenelg, North, Sturt, the Eagles and Central at this stage. Port also cannot be dismissed yet. Only time will tell.

Dutchy, to talk flags is foolish at this stage of the season. However, take three leaders of that calibre out of any side and I would think it would make a pretty big difference to them. How would the Glenelg team fare if you took out Backwell, McConnell and Allen? Would it make a five goal difference to the team?
