Eagles vs Sturt Round 6 2008 Review

Postby therisingblues » Sat May 03, 2008 5:56 pm

Eagles 18. 9 (117)
Sturt 12. 10 (82)

Eagles obviously too good.
Unbelievable scoreline considering that the Blues kicked the first 5-2 of the match. They were then outscored by 72 points over the rest of the game. Eagles were all over us, their forward line functioned well, and we were killed in the center.
Sturt sounded as though there were periods where they applied forward line pressure but couldn't convert. At the start of the third quarter the Blues made a few entries in to their 50 but came out with nothing. Then the Eagles went forward and instantly goaled through Passador, and they just skipped away from there.
Has Sturt's game plan been cracked open, or was Thompson's contribution to our previous victories greater than we first thought?
Well played Eagles. Sturt with a lot of homework now.
I'm gonna sit back, crack the top off a Pale Ale, and watch the Double Blues prevail

Eagles vs Sturt Review

Postby Aerie » Sat May 03, 2008 6:03 pm

Eagles 18.9 def Sturt 12.9

Perfect conditions for football with the sun out and not a breath of wind for the entire game. The game matched the conditions early. It was fast paced and although by the 15-20 minute mark, Sturt had 5.2 to the Eagles 0.0, the Eagles weren't playing that badly in terms of endeavour. Having said that, Sturt were much superior and what happened after this would not have been expected.

The Eagles came out after quarter time and attacked the ball and hunted in packs. McKenzie, Powell, Treeby, Salter, Dabrowski were all dominating and Passador was looking dangerous up forward. The Eagles quickly narrowed the gap and went ahead by 2 goals at half time.

It was a bit of an arm wrestle for 5 to 10 minutes after half time before the Eagles kicked away. Sturt had a period where they kicked 4 or 5 behinds in a row, but were unable to apply scoreboard pressure and the last quarter turned into a walk in the park and the Eagles 14th win in a row over the Double Blues.

Best players for the Eagles I thought were Treeby, McKenzie and Powell. Special mention to McEntee and Fitzgerald who continue to improve each week. Now for Central next Saturday night.

The Eagles will make the GF I have no doubt. I can't believe people wrote them off. It seems Norwood got them back into form, we're good for that.

Is Petrenko back next week? The excitement machine that he is!

Even though I like stats, I never look at previous years results to determine who will win. I look at current form, and for me, it was all that I expected when Sturt kicked the first five goals of the match.

Not that we weren't having a go, it looked like the Sturt of the first four rounds of the year - just outclassing everyone. But, Sturt seems to bring out the best in us and the second quarter was just stunning. Aerie basically summed it up - hunting in packs; attacking, straight down the middle footy; Passador, Grocke, Salter and Fitzgerald putting the finishing touches on the plays. In cricketing terms, McKenzie played a captains knock, BOG for mine, followed by Grocke, who gave Wark a bath early on before he was moved onto Passador. We should request to play Sturt each week. ;)

Although the Budget shows the win/loss record as 36/9, I had it as 37/9, so with it being 38/9, that's 81%.

The average winning margin is 47.8 points.

I missed a goal, but from what I have, Passador kicked 6, Fitzgerald 4, Salter 3, Grocke and McKenzie 2, Treeby 1.

I forgot to mention one player for Sturt who is destined for the big time. Number 52, Sharples. He may have played better games than today, but you can tell he has something special. He is so clean with the ball and the Eagles struggled to tackle him on several occasions. Could perhaps improve his disposal by foot, but he is up there with Danyle Pearce, Elijah Ware and Jared Petrenko as young indigenous players that just look/looked all class in recent years at league level.

Well what can I say .Sitting there in the grandstand thinking part way through the first term 5.2 to 0.0 we are gone and next week we play Centrals !!!
Mackenzie Cica Fairclough and i think dobber ( he came back on) all went on the ball at the same time and wham bam thank you mam good bye goodnight thanks for coming Sturt.
What the hell happened one minute Sturt are all over the Eagles like a teenage boy out on a date ,and the next they are almost dead in the water.
Before anyone blames the umpires for ANY decision to either team .Let me just say they were bad .BUT they were consistent in paying the free to the first player going for the ball ,not sure if they were always the first free that should have been paid, it went both ways. And umpire director please tell the umpires when they are looking at the players and staring into the sun to move so they can see what is going on.Once again it went both ways mostly.
Back to the game what I saw in the SECOND and Third terms was very pleasing indeed.A fast direct brand of footy .Special mentions to Ben Schwarze at full back he certainly did a good job on the Ken Farmer medalist, and that was why he was recruited as a BAKMAN.Well done Ben.Mcentee he certainly played very well and linked up well with Ben Schwarze when running off their sturt opponents .Fitzgerald stepped up a fair bit today well fitzy .
Passador it was almost like the passador of old at one stage I counted 5 sturt players to Pass and he out marked them and kicked a great goal.

The eagles still have some improving to do but we are now 3wins and 3 losses . Well done guys the season starts again next week against Centrals.

I think a few weeks back Dog_ger said the sleeping giants had awoken after the win against Norwood and I said they were stirring not yet awake.
Well Norwood didn't wake us
Westies didnt wake us last week
Sorry I can not help myself here
But even with a pretty ( very shocking awful even heard gay mentioned today ) new jumper the same OLD same OLD from the BOYS from UNLEY Sturt you are still our BITCHES !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 2003 was the last time you guys beat the EAGLES .And you have not beaten Woodville West Torrens at thebarton
SAME OLD RESULT SAME OLD STURT
I had to say that guys sorry to the mods but hell to quote
The Tennessee Cowboy from TNA
"Sorry for your DAMN LUCK" Sturt or is it now the Double blues and white that is just so wrong what a shocking awful jumper
Once more to everyone ELSE I am sorry but I kept that in all day

He took a great mark over a Sturt player (can't remember who), but he had to reach over him. I did think the Sturt player had first touch though.

I wasn't a fan of the Sturt jumper either, I don't think it would have worked today, but I wouldn't mind seeing the jumper worn in the 30s used.

And that Goal pass missed the mark handballed off then the ball was handballed on and then back to pass as he ran into an open goal.

The sturt backline at times were so far on top of the EAGLES fowards and then 2 or 3 would jump for a mark against each other while our forwards crumbed the ball and goaled.

Back on to their jumper i can not understand where the white comes from .And I hope no one ever complains about ours again after looking at that one today.
Funny two weeks in a row Sturt have lost to a team with a slash in their jumper is that an omen!! West next week for sturt.
