Went to North v West today, West outplayed North for 3.5 quarters and were 28pts up at one stage.
North somehow won the game by 6pts.
North 13-14 - 92
West 13-8 - 86

North ran amok in about 10 mins of the last qtr but besides that it was all Westies.
Except for Prokapec Westies had some strong marks up forward and down back.

For West I thought Illman had a good game, for North Gill and Ryswyk played well, North looked a much better side in the middle when O'Hara was rucking.
Some bad injuries for North, Koops is out for 6 weeks with an ankle and Ivens also got injured.

In the reserves game North won by 34pts.

Went to the centrals, eagles game today, just a question to anyone who was at the game. An eagles player went down very early in the game got carried off on a stretcher, not sure who it was his number was not listed,it was No.1 and looked alot like Skipworth looked like a serious knee injury.Hopefully someone can confirm or deny this.

I left as the stretcher came on, as I only went out to watch a mate in the Reserves, but yeah, Skipworth was wearing #1...

We lost by 16 points?? to Sturt. Got there just after the first quarter, we hadn't scored a goal in the first, we looked alright still a few players out who i would've expected to play league this year....Hopefully we can play better next week....

Eagles won by about 3 goals in an ordinary game - Skipworth carried off on a stretcher in the first 5 minutes with what looked like a ankle injury

To say "lucky" was a good word for North's performance today might be a little generous. I am still trying to work out how we actually stole that from West? I must say I thought a 10 goal win would be a cert given the teams on paper but as you all know football is played on an oval not on paper.

West despite having a number of 1st choice players unavailable or playing in the two's looked much better for 2 and a half quarters and are a lot more direct under the Weed than they have been for the past 2 years and they have some confidence to take with them into the season proper.

As for those scribes who think Norths midfield is suspect and the defence a bit "wobbly" - then you are on the money. The midfield was terrible today - taking nothing away from West who carved us up but in the end when we started to work a little harder and with some intensity inside the square so we went forward with purpose and got the results.

As for our defence - there are some problems. Not having Cox playing plus B. White in the two's was compounded by Koops going off with a bad ankle (6-8 weeks is the likely prognosis), Ivens limped off and Hargs at CHB is not really working - although he reads the play well and links into the play at times, he is too slow and too loose - plus his kick outs leave a lot to be desired. Schubert did a reasonable job but with the 4-5 of the expected starting defenders (3 not playing Cox, Walker, Coulter plus 2 off injured in Koops and Ivens in the first 1/4) - we look very vulnerable in the back line.

This could well be North's downfall this year. As for our midfield - take out Ryswyk and Bamford - who both played on the wing the rest were average and soft today. Ladhams is too much a showman at times and was caught on more than a few ocassions today. As per another post (cue Sus) on this forum - unproven is proabably a good word and soft also would sum us up today. In the end we played like crap and still won but hopefully it is a wake up call because if we serve that up each week then we will struggle to make the 5.

Take nothing away from West who despite having alot of expected first choice players out - probably deserved the win but didn't get it in the end.

Sturt won this weekend and I dont see anyone making funny comments. All the comedians tend to that during the weeks when the Blues get over the line. Where is rickyabyebaby who was convinced that this bay team was as good as the sides of 85/86

a good effort by the west...just lacked match fitness in the end.
they showed they wont be the easy beats this year...ben haynes
and hollands will be headaches for other sides.....
things are looking pretty good down at west and i expect them
to be the big improvers in the sanfl this year.

Thought the Bays looked pretty good. Sturt were 9 goals to 2 at one point, the Bays fought to get ahead in the second half and had more scoring shots. They looked whipped in the first quarter but Mickan's words must have done wonders - they controlled much of the game from that point on. They played a lot more direct, their handballs hitting targets and putting lots of pressure on Sturt who fumbled and messed around with things too much.

Sturt showed a lot of character at the end to run over the top and it was particularly pleasing to see Chambo get the better of Sherwood which is always a good contest to watch.

The Bays were impressive and I reckon will be one of those second tier clubs, like Sturt, pushing for a spot in the 5. However well the Bays played though, it must be noted that when they looked like they were going to overrun us in the last half, Sticks was playing a lot of juniors (some who were listed only on the reserves team sheet) and had a lot of our stalwarts (Feasty, Whiteman, Nelson, Bowen, Jarjoura) on the bench.

You only beat the bays  (please note bay fans - tongue in cheek!). Might not need to buy anymore if we get Jason Roe back from Brisbane - which might be the case in the near future.

Apparently everyone thought Skipworth had broken his leg when it happened with the way he was lying there so they called for a stretcher and it only turned out to be a rolled ankle.(real tough guy.)
