Umpires

Postby OCT » Wed Apr 30, 2008 7:08 pm

I noticed on a previous topic that some Centrals supporters didnt want R Williams or C Rowston this week.

Well we dont want them !! Unbelievable how R Williams seems to be the most talked about umpire in the league as the worst. !! Yet what astounds me with these men and umpires in general is that they are COMPLETELY UNACCOUNTABLE . The umpiring body thinks Williams is one of their best if not the best ? WTF dont they have umpire observers ? If a player puts in a poor performance he is criticised and eventually dropped. These guys seem to get rewarded for their poor performance. I have no problems with umpires making mistakes cos it happens , no problems if they are umpiring to the rules cos thats not their fault. But blatant poor decisions or no decision when they are in position is not acceptable and poor umpiring.

By the way for those that were not there last Saturday , Brant Chambers received a free kick for holding. Should have taken a photo !

My comments arent a reaction to Saturdays result mate , its an overall comment from what I see each week. I ahve heard Eagles supporters complaining about R Williams as well, but if you want him most weeks I am sure the rest of us would be happy with that arrangement.

I'd have Richard Williams anyday, only people who have absolutely no idea about the game would think he can't umpire.
Easily the best umpire going around in the SANFL.
Ive been at games when he's got abused and he hasn't even been umpiring that game!

Geez he must be alright for the Roosters then !! Geez if he's the best we are in real trouble. Just because I or others think he cant umpire doesnt equate to having no idea about the game or the rules . Maybe if you think he is great could it be that you have no idea or lack of understanding of the rules ?

I doubt it mate, as the people in the know wouldn't give him multiple awards and give him Grand Final matches, unless you think there's some whacked out conspiracy theory in place.
Ive encountered many North fans that think the same as you, they too are ignorant of the rules, like all teams we get our wrong decisions and correct decisions from him, Ive seen some shocking umpires in the SANFL, and he isn't close to one.
When you're at games observing other supporters (especially when at a game as a neutral) its pretty easy to work out who has an idea of the rules and the issue is not with the umpires most of the time.

sorry OCT I'm siding with the roosters camp and would rather have R Williams than Rowston any day of the week. He is a dead set joke and how the hell the SANFL give him a whistle each week is beyond me.

I went to the two games last Friday and as a neutral observer was astonished at the abuse hurled at some of the umpire's decisions when IMHO if it was me with the whistle in hand would have no hesitation in calling them.

I also would back the umpires review panel against 99% of supporters anyday.

Because some dont share the same viewpoint as your Wedgie doesnt make people ignorant or have a lack of understanding , it means we have different views. I personally dont rate him as an umpire and have not for years which is how I have judged him over time .

I think you are trying to say that some supporters get caught up in the passion of their side , no doubt. But their are times , like it or not , when people with an understanding of the game and the rules see umpires make mistakes and consitently.

No worries Heater but from your comments does that mean you have no idea ? No it is how you see it.

Poor decisions occur some of the time , no decisions happen more.
However the decisions made by some supporters on the rules of the game are usually incorrect 60-70% of the time. Passion overides reality.

For $200-300/game , abuse and threats. They can have it

Maybe time for OCT to pick up the whistle and start showing us how its done.
If at first you don't succeed , then destroy all evidence that you tried in the first place

This might get me in strife with my comprades as most seem pretty disgusted with the umpiring last Friday night, but I actually thought it was in the 7-9/10 category.

Sometimes when an opposition team strings a few together, it's purely because they're first to the ball and the ump is giving that player the benefit of the doubt (as he should) ... As an oppostion supporter it's often easier to blame the whistle-blowers than our own blokes who simply need to stop being 2nd to the pill.

Ump's are also like players, every now and then they'll have a dirty day, but I'd suggest that's definitely the exception rather than the norm.

He has the equal record for most League Grand Final appointments - 10. He has been in the 1993, 94, 96, 2000, 01, 02, 04, 05, 06 and 07 GFs. Ken Aplin is the other umpire with 10.

There is no way in the world I would be an umpire - being a teacher is abuse enough!!
For anyone who wants to criticise umpires, as already stated in the thread take it up yourself. I will guarantee you will start appreciating them more.

OCT = sour grapes or no idea, i've been to at least 11 matches this year & i haven't seen many mistakes in those matches i have witnessed at all, infact i've seen players from every side make more mistakes than the umpires, yes there is always the odd one (bad mistake) & OCT remember we as the public see the play from usually a different position than the umpire & he can only call it as he sees it, if you go back to saturday a sturt player CLEARLY THREW THE BALL TO A TEAM MATE, so clear was it that even little bayman saw it as did most on the hill but the umpire was on the other side of play so he COULDN'T PAY IT even if he thought it was a throw because HE HAS TO SEE IT TO PAY IT, even little bayman understood this when i explained it to him
i thought secret groups were a thing of the past, well not on websites anyway
