I can remeber Brian Colbey copping a very serious broken leg (or knee) in the late 70's

This was when the SACA had just installed its first video screen and they decided to replay it for all to see. Not enjoyable to see.

The Eichner one is still the worst I have witnessed at SANFL level.

Peter Vardy having his arm broken at Salisbury Oval in a game of junior footy was a horrific one that I witnessed from the sidelines, worst I have seen at any level of footy (DW, were you playing in that game?).

Stupid me went down to the race to see Jamie King coming off the ground on a stretcher with a broken leg.....

Also, not SANFL, but can't forget Daryn Cresswell banging his dislocated knee back into shape!

Don't know if it's the worst I've "seen", but certainly the worst I've "heard". Colbey snapped an achilles tendon at Footy Park against Norwood in 1976 (it was either round 4 or 5).

I was with a mate in the crowd and we heard a "bang" and Colbey went down. We joked that he had been shot, but that was the noise the archilles made as it snapped. Incredible.

Scotty Bassett's career ending injury was pretty bad ... Don't think it would have been as visually bad as Eichners, or say Nathan Browns at Richmond, but a year and a half after the event he still couldn't walk without a distinct limp.

Stephen Barratt's broken leg, 82 prelim. Truly horrible noise when sitting in about row 3, 35 metres from where it happened. In that same game, the sound of the punch that Peter Maynard got in his ear (which split his ear drum from memory), was also really disturbing.
This is actually not a nice thread.
Roger Woodcock -- 602 goals from a forward flank makes you a legend.

Agreed, I've avoided it until now.

SMAC - I remember Vardy's injury. Awful. Don't think I was playing that day though.

My mum, remembers that one too!!

So lucky to be too young to remember that one (I was there but only 9 y/o). When did he do his finger at training ? Was on the comback trail IIRC...

I dispute your inclusion of the words "most" & "ever", but otherwise your point is reasonable.

For me, Cam Roberts broken arm beats Eichner's knee.

Hey All,

As was the case with Nathan Brown's broken leg at Richmond, the bloody media keep replaying these severe injuries over and over about 5 times in 30 seconds. Poor Logan Hill, that was pretty bad wasn't it. I think I saw it 3 or 4 times on the ABC coverage then another 3 times later that night on Sports Tonight. It was amazing that there wasn't much reaction on his face immediatley after the break, it probably wasn't until he looked down and saw it for himself that the pain then seemed to kick in and the realisation that he was in a bit of trouble would've settled in.

Although not eventuating from the same type of circumstances, Logan Hill's broken leg was similar to the one seen recently in the English Premier League. For those that didn't see it or forgot (i'm sure there is footage on the net somewhere) but it was Birmingham City's James McFadden who ran in for a diving two foot tackle on Arsenal's Eduardo's leg, breaking it clean in 2 places. Ouch !! Hopefulyl, young Logan will not be out of the game for too long, good luck to him in his recovery from this horriffic injury.

A few other severe footy injuries, not neccesarily just in the SANFL that come to mind include Trent Hentschel's knee injury in a Showdown that doctors said resembled a massive car crash victim's injuries. Then there was James Hird absolutely smashing his face to pieces on Mark McVeigh's knee over in WA, Danny Morton's career ending neck injury playing for the Power a few years ago, of course that tragic incident that saw Neil Sachse become a quadriplegic, poor Chadwick's broken finger from the weekend not going back in for Doctor Barnes, the list could go on and on. Unfortunatly it happens at times and can be horrible, but addictive to watch in replay.

cam roberts was bad due to the shock he went into and the way he held it made it visually so much worse
