Interesting game to watch, even though the result was a foregone conclusion early in the match. Westies looked pretty good until the rain came but Eagles had too many good players.

I don't know why West Adelaide play Cupido at full back, he's not going to win too many game there. Hassan played well, Ezard looks a good player when he's got the ball, Bailey plenty of touches but doesn't get a lot of result from them, and Brad Moran did well in ruck. Robbie Gray was quiet.

Paul Stewart was very good for the Eagles, Passador booted 6 goals, Treeby was very good as usual, Cicolella good early, Dabrowski strong in ruck. Eagles midfield was far more effective that their counterparts. Jarrhan Jacky was pretty much useless all day.

Logan Hill broke his leg and will be missing for quite some time as it was a break in the lower part of the leg. He was in plenty of pain at the time.

I think West have some talented players like Willits, Cupido, etc who need to get involved in the game more for Westies to get onto the winners' board. Matthew Martin looked okay in patches in his 1st game.

Didn't think the Eagles were all that impressive early but got things moving just before half time, both sides made a horrible number of clangers, a hell of alot under no pressure, Eagles will improve due to the list they have, once again I can see Westies struggling even with the list they have which is disappointing because I picked them as the biggest improver in 08, can't see it happening

Tibia and fibula break for Logan Hill. Looked absolutely awful and probably felt 1000 times more awful than it looked.

Bad luck to Hill. Just saw on Sports Tonight and it looked horrible.

The Eagles did well to be within 9 points at quarter time. Westies were much the better side and had plenty of opportunity and really should have been at least 4 goals up at that stage. It may well have been a different game if that was the case.

Instead, the Eagles generally made the most of their opportunities going forward and gradually took control of the game to the point where West Adelaide looked lost. It's not due to a lack of talent for Westies as was the case in the last two years. Looking at the names in the budget, they should be better. Far too defensive in my opinion and they should make the most of Cupido and play him in the middle/half forward, who along with Willets would make a potent avenue to goal.

It was pleasing to see Cicolella come back the way he did. He did enough to suggest he will still be a very important part of the Eagles team this year. Also the young trio of Hicks, Broadbent and Davoren look comfortable at league level. Best player I thought for the Eagles was Paul Stewart who played 4 quarters of good footy giving plenty of run from the back line. I liked Schwarze's game at half back. He also gives plenty of run and has courage to cut off the long ball in. Treeby, Passador and McKenzie also played good games and McEntee is looking to settle in to his role in the team well. Grocke provided a good target across half forward. Now for a big fortnight where we need to come away with at least one win against Sturt or Central before the bye.

Comical moment for the day was the Westies banner, which unfortunately didn't quite make it with both wooden posts snapping half way up, leaving just the text at the bottom of the banner showing "THEY BUILT OUR HOME". Perhaps "they" should have built the banner as well?

What can I say about today's game .
I could be sitting here writing after an Eagles loss .But straight kicking seems to win most games .By this I am referring to the first quarter westies 4 goals 4 points and 2 or 3 out of bounds on the full. Big win to the Eagles that kept the Eagles in the game.
And it took Westies until the 12 minute mark of the third term to goal again . By that TIME the MIGHTY Eagles had almost sealed the game.
Good signs for the Eagles still a lot more improving to do but they are starting to get there.
Westies new game style to defensive and Flooding that was last seen about 3 years ago at league level.
Well done to the youngsters of the Eagles they looked great as did Grocke throwing himself at almost everything coming his way.

Cheers

The most puzzling aspect of this game was the performance of West Adelaide. They looked like a million dollars compared to the last half of 2007 in the first quarter. They looked like $500k when they kicked 3 goals in 4 minutes in the third. But just about all of the rest of the match, it would seem that nothing has changed. Now that is, I don't mean to say that there is no hope, but if Collins is going to keep on persisting with the flood/extra three players in the backline, well it will be just like 2005 again. Being on the defensive was when the score went from 4 goals to 2, to 4 goals to 11.

I could see some further improvement as a team from last week, but we will get smashed by Sturt next week, particuarly after that result today. Did I hear reports of Paul Stewart getting 42 possessions? I would have given Passador BOG for the amount of times he led for the ball and all those marks plus his ground work on top of that. Oh yes, and 6 goals. Bloody hard again to give out the best players, but Cicolella was great to see again, dodging and weaving just like he always does. How no one seems to tackle him is beyond me.

I'm glad somone else asks the same questions I asked last week....West have a gameplan which requires sooo much intensity it is nigh on impossile to keep it up for four full quarters
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

Spelly when west scored their 3rd goal I was a very worried Eagles fan.
Then the Flood seemed to work in reverse or something . :?

I noticed Fitzgerald was not used as much today .then he came on in the third term I think and kicked a couple of goals
Interesting to note Luke Jarrad down back which worked in the flood as no one was covering him .

I wanted to ask CD and Columbo what it was like taking the stats today with 5rph in their laps .
Personally I got very tired hearing "Raging bull Passador" coming from the seats behind me .All I can say is lucky I am always at the game and don't listen to them!!!
Did like the new scoreboard and time clock.
