SANFL Focus Group - Participants Sought

Postby Squawk » Fri Apr 25, 2008 7:31 pm

(I hope this isn't elsewhere on the site already) but I received this email from Norwood FC last Friday, which I'm sure will be of interest to many of you.

This is our chance - collectively - to have input into everything that we love (and despair about) regarding our beloved league - our voice can be heard so get on board everyone.

The South Australian National Football League is taking a close look at its market to understand how people interact with local footy and the SANFL.

It is important in this process that members, supporters, media partners, sponsors and players are consulted with to offer their ideas and opinions.

As a result, the SANFL has commissioned Square Holes, a South Australian based market research agency, to conduct a number of focus groups. The focus group discussions will help to understand attitudes towards the SANFL, their brand, marketing and other communications and help to refine strategies for SANFL.

An informal discussion group with members will be held early in the week commencing 5th of May 2008 in the city. The group will go for approximately 60 – 90 minutes. You will be paid $50 honorarium for participating.

If you are a member of an SANFL club, available and interested in taking part in this discussion, please contact Brenda at Square Holes at your earliest convenience on 8232 3355 or brenda@squareholes.com.

Please rest assured that your contact details will be treated with the utmost confidentiality and respect. They will only be used for this study, will not be made available to any other organisation and will be destroyed on completion of the project. Further to this, the focus group response data will be de-identified, i.e. there are no links between the responses and any personal information.

For those who cant participate, perhaps you could add your feedback here and those who can attend can ensure it is passed on in some way?

Great to see the SANFL being proactive in seeking feedback to help make the competition rise even further. Hopefully by taking this first step they will follow through will the recommendations that they gather from this process.

Great to see them making an effort to involve the supporters. Not sure if this is the sort of feedback they're looking for but here's my 2 cents worth.

Not surprisingly my comment to them would be a request to continue supporting the online radio broadcasts from RPH and LifeFM as they are the lifeline for interstate and overseas supporters/players families as well as those in Adelaide that cannot attend games for reasons of work or health (not counting the forums of course).

I would also congratulate them on adding things like the Budget to their website and the live scoreboard (when it works...hopefully just teething trouble).

My criticism would be that their polls on the website are nothing short of useless whilst people are able to visit and vote on a daily basis...if they want serious responses they must change it to allow only on vote per person/web address thing.

Any idea on what time it is - morning, afternoon or night?

Anyway, something I've been sayng for quite some time is to have a proper mini league competition - like what was on when Mini League first started. This would give interest to primary school students to how their schools zone is going in the competition - and then the finals can be played during the League finals, made of the best players from the schools zone that made it.

I have the feeling it's during office hours, noticing the $50 honorarium payment. But it would be nice to think that you could earn some money on the side just for your thoughts. ;)

i'd be interested to be involved but as spelly says it'll more than likely be during 'office hours' when most of us are at work, if they were really serious they'd have the 'think tank/talk fest' during an evening or maybe have two or three at different times to suit all shift workers as well
i thought secret groups were a thing of the past, well not on websites anyway

If this is what I think it is, it will be a market research/information gaining session.
These Market research type discussions are usually early evening ( after office hours ). I've attended a few before, usually in the Greenhill Rd area as most of the companies conducting them have their premises around that area. They videotape the proceedings ( I assume to see body language reactions to the discussions), there are usually 10 - 12 punters at each forum discussion.
They pay & you get a small snack for your time.
Can be a great way to have an input.

That's pretty much what I was going to write Les. Been there, done one of them myself.

Square Pegs should look at extending their sessions to allow country folk to contribute - because there are a lage number of us in the 'bush' who are passionate about the league too.

Good that the SANFL are being proactive.

Hopefully they don't tinker too much though, I really think it isn't broken and doesnt need fixing. One look at the WAFL and you'd realise that the SANFL is pretty healthy.

The only thing the league needs is a more prominent profile in the media.
It's all the SANFL's fault.

Well done Fatal - you are one of the chosen few.

Brickbats to the SANFL because I understand there is one focus group with a total of 9 participants - one representing each club.

I'm staggered that such small representation can be construed to be enough to accurately guage the feelings of grassroots supporters on the issues they are seeking to discuss! If they were only after one member per club, why go to all the effort to have clubs email all their members seeking volunteers when they only wanted one per club?

I understand there will be an on-line survey coming up so keep your eyes out for that, but seriously, this process is farcical - almost borders on lip service IMHO.

They are being choosy, but I assume they have their reasons for this. I am not welcome due to being a volunteer official with the club. Still didn't have a Centrals supporter signed up at Friday lunch time...
