state squad is due when ? & will there be a surprise ?

Postby bayman » Thu Apr 24, 2008 7:08 pm

well firstly just wondering when the state aquad would be announced ? & in current form would daniel hargreaves be in it ? i would think he'd have to be in & what a surprise that would be considering 98% of the footy public said he was finished (me included)
i thought secret groups were a thing of the past, well not on websites anyway

surprise= Scott Dutschke his attack on the ball is the best i have seen in the SANFL, has pace and can take a mark way above his size. If any Central player deserves to get picked i think its Dutschke. IMHO if the Dogs B&F finished now he would be the winner.

I reckon Blues fans may disagree on this one... Andrew Whiteman is not nicknamed Madness for nothing.

True i rate Whiteman as an absolute gun and would have him in the Doggies line up every week BUT i tend to think in his Madness he gives away a few to many free kicks, i don't have any stats to back me up but using my recall of games i have seen him play.
Dutschke is only 22-23 once his body gets even stronger will hurt alot of people (fairly).

From Glenelg I would say Ben Kane in backlines, maybe Sammy Rudolph as well due to his effort last season on Chambers. Chambers shoe in for full forward.

I'll go out on limb and say it won't be a North ruckman!

Your'e right WHUFC , Whitey is a great player and probably should be in . However as you say he does give away some silly frees at times. He is fearless especially for his size. Wjitey doesnt hurt anyone cos hes too small but his desire for the footy is at times crazy .

OCT I'm shocked, I totally agree with one of your opinions, OMG !!!

Whiteman is definately one of the toughest half backs to play SANFL in the ;ast 10 years IMHO. I think he would have to have one of the back flank spots written in in pen and highlighted for the state team, not just in pencil. Also agree about Scott Dutschke, think he would work really well as an impact player coming off the bench against the Vics. I reckon he should be in the initial squad at least. I think he is still learning a bit about his game and playing on the ball, not just as a permanent half forward, is certainly a step in the right direction. Just thinks he needs to work on his consistancy, which I'm sure he'll agree, and he could be an absolute star for the Doggies for the next 10 years.

I honestly don't think Hargraves will get a sniff in regards to the initial squad. I think he is and has been a great player at SANFL level but I just think he probably doesn't apply enough defensive pressure and again, like Scotty Dutschke, struggles with consistancy at times. No doubt, on his day, he's a gunn (as proved with his 10 goal bag) but I think Chambers is the standout full forward and I think that the state selectors would have to have a very serious look at Central's Daniel Havelberg. I know it might sound bias, but this young gun is probably unlucky to not be on an AFL list this year. He is so versatile and would definatley work well out of a pocket in tandem with Sturt's Brant Chambers, or if the Vic's have a taller forward line, Havelberg can also play a negating role, as proven against Perrie in the Sturt game earlier in the year.

On an earlier post regarding what the state teams banner should read, I actually put in what my state team would look like. Sure, it might have been a tad Centrals favoured but I think I had a pretty good balanced and potent team. Interested to see the opinions of others. Here it is:

SOUTH AUSTRALIA

Coach: Darrell Hart (again I think ?) but it should be previous years Premiership coach (Roy Laird)

FF: Ian Callinan (Centrals) Brant Chambers (Sturt) Daniel Havelberg (Centrals)

HF: James Gowans (Centrals) Clinton Alleway (North) Heath Younie (North)

C: Leigh Treeby (WWT) James Allen (North) Luke Crane (Sturt)

HB: Andrew Whiteman (DVC) (Sturt) Daniel Schell (Centrals) Scott McGlone (Sturt)

FB: Paul Thomas (C) (Centrals) Brett Zorzi (Norwood) Corey Ahchee (VC) (Port)

RK: Craig Parry (South) Mathew Slade (Centrals) Jeremy Clayton (Port)

INTERCHANGE: Brad Dabrowski (WWT) Chris Gowans (Centrals) Jade Sheedy (Sturt) Sam Rudolph (Glenelg)

EMERGENCIES: Ben Kane (Glenelg) Adam Switala (Centrals) Scott Dutschke (Centrals) Damien Cupido (West)

Was pretty hard to get the right mix and of course the team would have to be picked on the current form of current players, not injured stars on the sidelines making comebacks. I'm sure there will be opinions of others who will have different players or blokes in other positions. One thing it made me realise though is that the quality of ruckman in the comp this year is pretty light on. As always there was a plethera of on ballers or and small forwards to pick from. I like the look of my team and reckon it want be too far off the actual selected one.

Opinionate away fellow posters, look forward to your thoughts and what the "teams" you would select will look like...

big phil, on your team i could only see 2 players that imho wouldn't make it in the positions named zorzi & havelberg, whether the others make it i don't know but they are the 2 players i would leave out of that 'named' side

From a dogs perspective Phil... (you did ask for opinions  ).

Havelberg has not earned a spot in a state side, I imagine there are a few blokes from other clubs ahead of him.

Picking a side on form, it's strange to have James Gowans (yet to play a game this season) in the starting 18 and Chris Gowans on the interchange. Give it a few weeks, things may be very different on that score - James will have a few games under his belt, Chris will lift a notch with James out there giving him a hard time...

Heres a few tips on the State squad.
1. Hargraves is no hope
2. Dabrowski " " " "
3. Darel Hart LOVES the Gowans so they both will be given every chance.

That will do for now folks

How about a spot for the goal kicking machine Vlatko..the ball goes down there only half as many time as it does for other forwards, although it does go to HIM 90percent of those..

Pfft

I see your Dutschke and Whiteman and raise you - Ben Mules......

Fair Dinkum if he aint named on the HBF for the state side or at least on the bench there is something seriously wrong with our selectors.

I'm not saying Dutscke and Whiteman aren't tough far from it I seriously rate both blokes in that area. However I seriously rate Mules as he does so many hard things off the ball (tackles shepherds smothers) that set us up with goal scoring opportunities and his courage when going for it is 2nd to none.

Benny Kane hasn't been in as good as form as he was last year. Also he has been playing mainly on the wing but he has been out shone by young Tom Holmes who has been burning this year. Isn't there some qualifications about who can play i.e been here for more than a year and not currently AFL listed??? I mean if Perrie meets the qualifications he would be in instead of Havelberg IMO, Can someone elaborate?

I think your side is pretty good Big Phil

My side and happy for it to be crucified....

HF: James Gowans (Centrals) Clinton Alleway (North) Matty Bode (Glenelg)
