SANFL attendances

Have been rather sweet, eh?

From the Advertiser, "THE GOSS" section...

Fans turn out
Well done, Adelaide, for supporting your local league.

SANFL attendances are on par with last year's 4.2% increase in crowd numbers, proving suburban derbies are still the hottest ticket in town. Over three round, 44,032 patrons have cheered on their teams around town, averaging about 3,700 people per match. SANFL general manager of partnerships and strategy Rob Nelson said it was the stories that drew people in and kept them coming back. "Jack (Cahill) is back and sturt has continued its good forum from last year and it has a huge supporter base. Having a top-of-the-table clash between South and Sturt at Hickinbotham this weekend will surely draw another big crowd."

And I don't think he was taking the piss when a 5AA announcer said the SANFL Show ratings were going 'through the roof'.

I think we have at least part of the answer here.

South's crowds are up also. 2,400 for South vs West at Noarlunga???? Who'd heard of it before this year?

P.S. I acutally thought Sturt's crowds were down a little, considering the importance of the past three matches they have played. Last year's grand finalists in consecutive weeks and Sturt was favourite or evens to win both.

As we do at most home games, the old man and I had a stab at the crowd out at Hamra Homes Oval Saturday night...

I must admit, I was pleasantly suprised to see around 4500 people at the game, even with the PAPs playing down at AAMI

I won the guessing game, I said between 3800 and 4000, the old man thought only 3500 !!!

Great to see that we had the biggest crowd for the round despite the supposed blockbuster with North and Sturt at Prospect.

Good figures for the game against Westies. Last year you would have been lucky to break the 1000 mark!!!

Saintal, i have to disagree, i was really pleased with the numbers on Saturday it felt to me one of the biggest turnouts for a West v South game for a number of years. Maybe reflecting that these frustrated supporters of both clubs rightly feel their clubs are now moving is positive direction.

Don't get too excited there BP, night games usually get larger attendances.

Yeah, I know that mate, I was just a bit suprised that out of 4500, there was 4000 Dogs supporters there, considering it was only Norwood and that there was an earlier threat of pretty bad weather, the rain storm AAMI ended up getting ??!!

Regardless of all this, it is great to see SANFL attendances on the up once again, as it should be for our great competiton...

I still hold doubts only 5800 rocked up to round one Port vs Centrals.

I cant believe there were 1500 people more at round one than there was on saturday night at hamra.

The northern end goals were as packed as i have ever seen them round 1.

Avg Crowd Per Game as at end of Round 4
2004 -- 3,774 per game (Anzac Day was in Rd 4)
2005 -- 3,061
2006 -- 3,275
2007 -- 3,438
2008 -- 3,657

With Anzac Day looming and with it some big crowds expected this weekend looks like the league should be off to a bumper start crowd wise.

One question that needs to be asked is if those watching from the Alberton Bowling Club are including in the official Alberton Oval figures?

There would have been at least 200 in that area this afternoon.

I think they are, not sure if things have changed but the Bowling Club used to only let people in with a passout from people that went through the gate.

They have a SANFL Official at the entrance to check tickets (PAMFC ticket holders and Bowling Club members who can get a season home match ticket in their membership) plus you can pay the $9.00 bucks and go in through the Bowling Club.

One must remember that they don't count kids coming in through the gates. I'm pretty sure kids had to pay to get in before the Crows were introduced and i think they were charged about $1. and were counted. So in reality when they say 3,000 attended a game in reality you could add quite a few more to the attendance figures.
