SANFL umpiring so far...your thoughts

Postby bayman » Mon Apr 07, 2008 10:24 pm

i've watched 5 of the 8 games played so far this year & i'd have to say bar for the odd soft free kick & the occaisional mistake by being out of position that the umpires are overall doing a great job

but what do you think ?

can you complain about the umpiring costing you a game so far this year ?

I haven't noticed too much wrong in the 2 games I've seen this far Bayman ... Rd 1 v Sturt there were a couple of odd ones early (probably cancelled themselves out) and Rd 2 v Westies I thought was pretty good bar 1 against Westies late in the game that was a bit of a Barry Crocker.

Too easy to criticise the umpires. Time to point the finger at the right target, The Rule Makers.

As I've said elsewhere on this board today......

No problems from me. What I like about our umpires is that the generally reward the player who goes in and gets the footy, is first to it or is making the footy his prime objective.

As a supporter you can't complain about that.

A few times agaisnt South I thought WTF when your caught up in the emotion of wanting your side to get the pill but when you calm down and think about it rationally you can see why the decision was made (South more often than not were first to teh pill)

So in a nutshell they get 8-9/10 from me.
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

Not only that grantj, but for every rule there is, the clubs try and exploit or work around.
I'd hate to be an umpire and a lot of people forget that we wouldn't have a game without them.
Maybe someone can create a http://www.saumpires.net forum where they can bag every player that makes a mistake during the game.

i reckon pubes and his mates decisions were favouring the eags 70/30 in the first, the hill was going boonta, however they lifted their game after qtr time - just like we did......coincidental or not i dont know

nothing wrong with the umpiring on saturday including the first quarter, there were a few soft free kicks that wwt's got (hands/push in the back) but the umpires are instructed to pay them so it isn't their fault that kevin bartlett & his cronies justify their jobs by making soft rule interpretations & changes, so stampy can you say that they were atrocious ? :? :? & while on that interpretation i don't like it but surely players should be smart enough to get in front & get the free kick ?

Pubes hasn't umpired for 2 years.

Bring back Max Cuzzocrea, then we would all have something to complain about. In my opinion the worst umpire I have ever seen (at a senior level).
He's still my hero even if he is a little bit crap.

My views on the SANFL umpires is well documented on here. They have been pathetic for many years now. Cant see it changing.

Only seen the one game as well, but they did seem to be paying holding the ball earlier than in the past. Oh, and they are red hot on calling play-on for short passes that don't go the required distance.

There were a couple of baffling calls on Saturday, but there always are - IMO the best gauge is the players reactions though and there weren't too many that saw the players getting jumpy... Even Pfeiffer was OK.

I'd rather have SANFL umps than AFL ones... any day!

Umpires are generally worse at the start of the year, just like footballers who improve as the year goes on.
If they're getting some positive feedback in here after Round 2 they must be doing something right.
Must admit the 2 games Ive seen (except for the occasional shocker) I think they've been pretty good.

Calling the stats each week I often call the free kick correctly. For example 'in the back free against treeby' or 'holding man free for passador'.

I seem to get it correct most of the time - indicating either the umps are pretty consistent across the league or I'm as bad as they are! :D

My opinion for what it is worth - at the bay on Saturday if you were in front you got the free - early we were but for most of the game we werent and the frees went accordingly.

weren't we all told by our coaches growing up to play in front & you'll get the kicks ? & that is exactly what cd has said, also with the softer interpretation these days so to play in front is even more critical than ever before

It hasnt been great, but probably no worse than other years, actually the number of 25m penaltys is just to much, they are certainly over doing it in that area, when there is a little bit of contact after a mark is taken they really just need to let it go.
