The professionalism of the SANFL clubs

Just watching the Essendon v Carlton game atm, and how Carlton are wearing their 'traditional' navy jumper in defiance of the AFL (and risking a $110 000 fine in the process), just makes me think about how great the SANFL competition is, especially in clash jumpers.
Norwood's home jumper is just as traditional as Carlton's (or Collingwood's, Essendon's et al), yet they were the first team in the SANFL to come out with a clash jumper back in 2002. There was no hoo haa from Norwood's administration. They saw a need, they consulted their supporters, and they have now have a clash jumper.
We've since seen the Eagles, West Adelaide, Sturt and Centrals follow suit. Again with Sturt, their jumper is just as traditional as a Carlton or Collingwood, but they haven't grandstanded and harped on about we'll never change because we've worn the same jumper for a bizillion years. They just went out and did it.

Spot on . Sturts jumper however should be the heritage one worn against Port @ Unley last year , that looked great. Maybe we will change every year ? Which is what you should do if its a markeitng exercise.
I saw Centrals today and thought it was excellent.
The eagles should concentrate on a decent home strip first I reckon.
Anyway , how do Carltom risk a 110k fine ?

Sounds like they're being a bit silly about it. To be honest I'm surprised the teams don't all have a clash jumper...I would have thought all sports teams would. Just be grateful that they're not like the UK soccer clubs bringing out a new home and away strip every fortnight and costing die hard fans a fortune.
Regards
JAS

http://www.news.com.au/heraldsun/sport/ ... 42,00.htmlApparantly the AFL have told Carlton they need to wear their white jumper tonight.
Carlton have said 'stuff you' to the AFL pretty much and gone out in their blue jumper, claiming they 'banned' it after their inept performance against St Kilda last week.
I believe the AFL can fine clubs up to $5000 per player for not wearing a clash jumper. $5000 x 22 = $110 000.
As I said, just shows how professional clubs like Sturt and Norwood conduct themselves - they have as much right to call their jumpers 'traditional' as Carlton and Collingwood, yet they've gone out and created clash jumpers no worries.

Tradition is the NAVY BLUE....not white.
If Norwood wish to cash in on a jumper that isn't the traditional jumper then good luck to them.
I LIKE the Carlton away jumper, however I much prefer they play in the Old Dark Navy Blue....
It's not like the Soccer, where you can have say 5 teams in the one league playing in the same colour/or variations
(i.e Man U, Liverpool, Arsenal, Boro, Sunderland)
The Bays jumper is great and I hope they never have a clash jumper.
Sure have a themed round for heritage etc but the Gold sash always please (and the Navy Blue and white CFC).

AS I said in teh AFL board and I'm not a Carlton supporter?
How easy is it to tell the teams apart???
I Don't see no reason why Carlti=on should be wearing white tonight. Dead easy to tell the teams aart with teh traditional white shorts for teh away team and the differences in teh Blue and Black jumpers.
I hope Glenelg never adopt a "clash" guernsey and I've told the CEO that.
I'm still waiting for someone to tell who Sturt clash with.
What was ironical today at the Bay is that you had WWT in a their "clash" guernsey of predomionantly gold against the bays who have gold in their guernsey, FFS it isn't hard to work out that a predominantly blue guernsey is less like to clash with a Black and Gold guernsey that a gold one???
CD can you explain????

You are spot on Tassie. Why do Carlton need to wear a poxy white jumper tonight? I thought it looked great tonight and really added to the exciting game of footy. You could quite clearly tell the two teams apart!

I'd say that was the case because that would mean one club had a mostly dark guernsey and the other a light guernsey.
I'm wondering how people got through years and years of both competitions without clash guernseys though - did everyone's eyesights go bad or something?

Looking at the photos from Broadspectrum today I'm not sure you could call what Norwood wore a "clash" guernsey. Granted, would have been worse clash-wise if they wore their normal strip. But they still looked similar to me, the colours schemes are almost identical.
A true "clash" guernsey would have been something completely different from Westies' - probably involving a lot of white. Its a concept neither SANFL or AFL clubs are fully on top of I am not sure we should be patting SANFL clubs on the back just yet ....
Us supporters aren't clear either, if I hear one more person call Sturt's ALTERNATE strip a 'clash' strip (and then ask "well, who do they clash with") I'll scream!

Dunno, should have been white as the away side, but I can't recall a time when we had white shorts with either the current alternate strip or the one before.

Found the jumpers easy to tell apart. In pack situations, found the shorts (and to a degree) the socks way more of a clash then the jumper....

It's a good question!
I think its partly that everyone put up with it because we never thought it could be fixed. Don't forget that as long as 8-15 years ago, Channel 7 and Wayne Jackson used to step in and insist on certain teams wearing white shorts to avoid a clash.
And white away shorts have been worn for how long ... ages? We just never thought we could apply the theory to the guernseys as well.

I prefer clash/alternate/away guernseys to those god awful coloured shorts of the 70s/80s.

That's about the point I think it all began. But then again, the practise of the away team with the white shorts was good enough, I thought.

Perhaps the club found it didn't look good or something (white shorts with the gold guernsey) I'm not sure.

In the olden days at one stage wasn't it black shorts for home team and white shorts for away team regardless of colours?
I don't like that idea.
Ironically one of the few clubs that would look good with white shorts is North and they never wear them!

Good on Carlton for not wearing a white jumper tonight, whilst Collingwood do not have a clash jumper there should not be any requirement or fine for any club not to have a clash jumper.
If people find it hard to make out on tv, buy a ticket and go to the game!
