Port Adelaide have opened their account with a comfortable 46 point victory over South Adelaide at Alberton today.

After Port kicked 5 consecutive goals in the first quarter, the Panthers were never seriously in the hunt. Port could have buried the Panthers in the first half but a number of behinds from gettable chances kept South Adelaide in the hunt.

South won the 3rd quarter, and kicked the opening goal of the last but 3 quick goals to the Magpies finished off the contest.

Jordan Erskine played a stunning game up forward, kicking 6 goals from about 14 shots and around 12 marks. He was joined by Michael Clinch (4 goals) and Luke Harder (2) in setting up the win. Up the ground, the Magpies were served very well by Josh Taylors efforts in the ruck and by Tyson Wait and Todd Hughes' efforts in defence.

Dylan Williams kicked 4 goals for the losers, whilst Thomas Hateley took one of the biggest hangers you'll see this year.

A Harry Miller shot after the siren couldn't stop Jack Cahill's South Adelaide from recording only their 11th victory at Alberton in an unlikely thriller today.

South Adelaide looked to have the match won after breaking out to a 21 point lead deep into time on of the last quarter, thanks to an Andy Otten goal. But a spirited Port Adelaide last gasp fightback which saw them kick 3 majors in the space of 90 seconds, gave them a chance to snatch a victory in what would have been one of the most bizarre comebacks seen.

A Tim Looby shot from 60 failed to make the distance and as the Panthers ran the ball out of defence, they again looked to have it won. But a costly turnover gave Stephen Eichner the ball, and he found Harry Miller who marked as the siren sounded. His shot from 50 didn't make the distance and the Panthers recorded their 2nd victory of the season.

The Magpies somewhat dominated the last quarter, but could only manage 7 behinds before their last gasp comeback. Meanwhile, the Panthers kicked 3 goals, each against the run of play in the last quarter to break out to their eventual match winning lead.

The Panters used the ball better and made the most of their chances all day, having 7 less scoring shots than the Magpies. Ben Warren was a star with 5 goals, 4 of which came in the first half. He beat off two opponents before Corey AhChee returned to defence to blanket the South spearhead.

A dominant spearhead would prove to be the difference, with Daniel Hargraves struggling to impact at the other end, ending with one goal, a bunch of dropped marks and some costly last quarter misses in front of goal.

South kicked 6 goals to 1 in 20 minutes of football either side of half time which was the catalyst for the victory.

Best for the victors was Ben Warren who looked unstoppable up forward in the first half. He kept South in it when Port were on top early, and his straight kicking was the difference. Andy Otten and Andrew Bachmann were lively in the middle, whilst Josh Thewlis and James Turner were strong in defence.

Nathan Krakouer was the best for the Magpies, whilst Jeremy Clayton, Tim Looby and Ivan Maric all worked hard.

For South, its a fantastic start to Jacks reign as coach down at Nourlunga. For the Magpies, it seems that issues that were present in 2007, have yet to be resolved for 2008.

Well im ******* shattered! Nothing learnt from last year. Wasteful kicking yet again in front of goal. 7 straight behinds in the last quarter is ridiculous. After all the close losses last year, we just cant seem to find that extra 5% to win the match.

With Port kicking to the Southern end in the 1st quarter with the help of a two to three goal breeze a few wasted opportunities saw South keep themselves in it.AhCheee was good across half forward for Port and Clayton was reaping the efforts of Maric in the ruck.Only Turner and Torney for South showed any resistance while Warren led Eichner around to kick 2 first quarter goals.Travis Baird looking dangerous with 1.

At the start of the second quarter South goaled first after a big mark and goal from Dale Ellis while Turner and Torney continued to repel.In a good quarter Corey Achee kicked 2,
Shayne Biasci kicked an important running goal after Eichner burst from defence and Travis Baird acquainted himself to Jeremy Clayton,but the important player once more was Warren who,with two strong marks led Eichner a merry dance and kicked 2 more to have 4 at half time:

After half time South came out firing kicking the first two goals into a slight breeze to take the lead from the Magpies.Nathan Krakouer,showing he might get called up to higher duties in the next week or two kicked a fantastic goal after losing a marking contest,then springing to his feet to take the ball away from the pack with pace and goal.South got out to a 3 goal lead but Port hit back through Vinnie Rugolo who kicked the first of his 2 goals,showing some park in the forward line in the process.Port's attack had to relinquish AhChee to defence to quell the influence of Warren,and although Warren kicked a goal AhChee was influental at full back and kept Port in the game.
Just as Port began to run Josh Thewlis took a strong mark and goaled to keep the 'Pies at bay:

It appeared as though the game was out of Ports reach Baird kicked the first goal of the last quarter for South,taking them to an early 13 point lead in the last quarter.Rugolo goald again for Port and the 'Pies had plenty of chances.Hargraves (twice) CLayton and Biasci all missing kickable set shots while South went forward twice for goasl to Bachmann and Otten.A one on one contest developed on the outer wing and with Krakouer bouncing his way to half forward and looking to centre the ball Thewlis ran and chased hard to get Krakouer right on the attacking 50 arc and this appeared to be Ports last chance.But,late goals to Thurgood and Maric got Port back to within 3 points with only moments to go.Souths defence,well served by Torney,Bennett and Turner all day were under seige.A missed mark on the members wing from Dale Ellis gave Eichner the chance to deliver into Ports forward line,the barely sighted Harry Miller took an uncontested mark right in front of the main stand,as he went back to take his kick the final siren sounded.The distance porved to be too much for Miller who failed to register a score and South Adelaide earnt and well deserved the two points they took from Alberton today.

The mentor (Jack Cahill) took the points over his protege (Tim Ginever) and for once Jack made his way down the the away team rooms to sing a song he would never thought he would sing under the grandstand of Alberton Oval.

Poor kicking is poor football,Port's missed shots combined with Souths accuracy and dour defence proved the main points of the game.Ben Warren the difference with 5 goals.

I still can't believe we only lost by 3 points. We were awful and can only get better - yet nearly beat the second placed team.

There's some sporting cliche about getting results while still playing poorly. We didn't get the result, but you know - it kind of applies to yesterday...

Thats him. As I mentioned in the review, I think he had around 12-14 shots on goals.
