Central's new Away guernsey

Postby Wedgie » Fri Apr 04, 2008 8:57 am

A pic of the real thing on players in this mornins paper.
One word, SENSATIONAL!!!
Take note on how to design a great alternate guernsey North, West, Norwood and Sturt!
Well done to all at Elizabeth involved including the fans as I understand they played a part in selecting the winning design.
Even the sponsor is incorporated into it tastefully.

And just on sponsors on guernseys WTF is going on at Glenelg? The sponsor down the sash diagonally looks disgraceful.

We constantly harp on about how were better than the AFL but they leave the SANFL for dead when it comes to putting sponsors on guernseys.

It does look alright, doesn't it? A great move by the club, although the point about including the supporters is a little generous - they put a poll on the club forum, got about 100 (from memory) votes and the selected guernsey lost the vote!

Agree about sponsors, SANFL clubs do seem to lack a bit of creativity in that department - could be related to the much smaller marketing departments when compared to AFL clubs.

Really?? You're the first person I've heard say that.

IMO I think it looks good as it protects the integrity (borders) of the sash, in other words no sponsors logo going across it - and clearly identifies the sponsor.

Best of both worlds the original sash is retained and enhanced and the sponsor is clearly identified.

Yes you are right the AFL leave us for dead in that manner as clubs can only have one sponsor on the front of the guernsey - and only over the right pectoralis major. Comes from being a traditionalist but I much prefer the single sponsors logo over the right breast as Glenelg had until 1994, then the SANFL changed it to allow clubs to have bigger logo's and in the centre of the guernsey.
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

An interesting line in the article was that "The bulldogs will use the jumper for every game except finals-assuming they qualify for a ninth major round appearance."

I hope he means every away game. My understanding is that it is an away guernsey. I would be very disapointed if im wrong. In saying that i love it, as wedgie said it's brilliant and way better than any other clubs efforts. I also like the fact it's fairly original, i havent seen any other local or amauter club wearing that exact guernsey.

And while im on it the article should have read ninth straight finals appearance.

lol, I wasnt aware of that, I take back my praise of the fans then.

Sounds like the sort of thing North would do, find out what the members and fans want and do the opposite! ;)

Looks good, but why don't they just wear the white one from the 80's.

Because it was crap and very dated perhaps?

Beauty in the eye of the beholder, and all that jazz... I reckon the new sponsor labelling looks great. The old Protec patch stood out like a sore thumb. The Gliderol label blends in with the guernsey a whole lot better, makes it look a lot less cluttered. It does more justice to the jumper than anything in my memory, except perhaps the old Associated Midland logo.

For a really bad sponsor label, wind the clock back to the early 90s when Sturt had a Sanctuary Cove patch on the jumper. Or look across the border at East Perth: I believe there's a jumper somwhere underneath all their sponsors' names.

The link has a computer generated image of the guernsey (option 2 is the chosen guernsey), I can't even find a SANFL page on AdelaideNow.

Thanks smac.

I like it. It still looks "Central" to me, while being a light alternative to the standard dark jumper. Glad they didn't go with the preferred option; that one looks too much like a Western Bulldogs ripoff. It would've been nice to see the old '80s guernsey get trotted out again though 8)

Nevertheless I question the need for Central - and indeed most SANFL teams - to wear an away guernsey. I don't think Central's jumper clashed with any other.

No real clashes, you are correct. I also agree with the first one being a WB rip-off, glad it didn't get chosen by the club.

We did wear the 80's guernsey in a heritage match, can't recall if it were last season or the one before.

Edit - There's a photo of Heath Lawry wearing it on the home page of the dog's website, must have been last season.

I agree about your points on the jumper, I really like it in comparision to the W.Bulldogs "esque" version. Although yes, it is technically an away gurnsey,I think the word that should be used is an "ALTERNATE" jumper. The Advertiser this morning stated that we wont be wearing in the finals ("when" we we make it, not "if" we make it !!! Ha ha, over confidence there I know...) and only for "away" games. I reckon it would look great in the finals... Something different...

Your point is also right about our original jumper not clashing against any other team but obviosuly it isn't because of that. I would say it is more from a marketing point of view and trying to "keep up with the times", although I would think it's fair to say we are trend setters in some aspects. I do like the predominatley white version that will be making it's debut against the Double Blues at Unley (sorry House Brothers Oval). The only concern I would have though, is with all this recent rain, if the cricket pitch in the middle of the oval is boggy (as it has been in the past) with all the mud, we may not be able to recognise the white jumpers. I reckon the lucky person who has to wash all the jumpers will be dreading this choice !! Do we reckon the reserves will wear it as well ? I don't think they will, but I'd be happy to be proved wriong...

Bring on tomorrow, should be a rip snorter game of footy, I can't wait.... !!!

GO U DOGGIES...

Here's my thoughts on some alternate 'away' strips for the other clubs. Centrals, Eagles and Sturt have them so they'll be missing from the list.

North -- just reverse the colour arrangement... white strip with red 'V'.
Glenelg -- same idea as for North's. Black sash and gold surround.
Port -- didn't they release a training jumper that had black prison bars?
South -- they could go Geelong and have horizontal stripes.
West -- bring back the jumper with the vertical stripes.
Norwood -- that's a hard one, not much to work on there. They could copy Melbourne's jumper, which was one of Norwood's earliest strips, wasn't it?
ARRIVE... RAISE HELL... LEAVE.

No it wasn't one of Norwood's earliest strips. They briefly adopted the Melbourne guernsey under Killigrew (early 1960s) but thankfully reverted back to the original style which they have today.

Norwood do have a current alternate strip but it definitely needs to be scrapped and replaced with something more befitting of the 21st Century!

Nope ! Like the Redlegs second strip it retains a lot of the original but avoids clashes with South and co.
Also like the Centrals second strip too looks great....in fact prefer it to the main jumper.......hated that Hicks inspired jumper of the 80's though....who did'nt ?
