Cahill might have walked on water at Port, but his record as coach of other teams (Port Power, Collingwood, West Adelaide, SA SOO and SANFL teams) is lacklustre.

He deserves to be mentioned in the same sentence as Kerley and Oatey, but only in a specific comparative context, i.e. "John Cahill, unlike Kerley and Oatey, failed to achieve success at more than one club".

On-field Collingwood was traditionally one of the stronger VFL clubs at the time, despite an average year or two prior to Cahill's arrival. One finals campaign in three years (IIRC) should be expected as a bare minimum. A great coach might have done better.

Certainly his first season went better than most pundits expected, but if the guy had lived up to the hyperbole then he might at least have gotten them to at least one finals appearance in two seasons.

It's funny this topic came up after last night I was reading the Media Guide and pondering the reasons why Jack decided to go one more round with South - Jack must be thinking about his legacy if he were to somehow snare the league record with another flag. I can't imagine anyone coaching 11 premiership teams ever happening again and it would be an incredible achievement.

Of course I'm sure he has other noble reasons for getting back in the ring* but I do bet he gets a little misty-eyed when driving up the Southern Expressway, thinking about what might be...

Jack Cahill has been and still is an outstanding coach,and as for the call on his lacklustre effort with port power? You must be joking! He managed to bring together basically an SANFL squad of players with a few recruits and made them very competetive from the start. He may have a basic game plan playing tough uncompramising football,but he sure knows how to get the best out of what he has at his disposal.
I wish he had been the Crows innagural coach instead of Graham Cornes,he may have left an even better legacy!!

An inquiry to match fixing as to how it happened and how much 8 other teams profited.
SANFL Footy Tipping Comps would close.
Sites like this would be silent in terms of position finishes and forecasting Final 5 and GF favorites.
A run of suicides from supposed experts on here who don't barrack for South.
A run of heart attacks and associated medical conditons from the shocked Panthers fans.
The return of "Ripley's believe it or not".

and finally I would give up following or commenting on Football for South showing up the complete lack of knowledge and judgement I have (and I suspect quite a few others would join me) plus the complete anger and shame in my team finishing lower than South this year.

As they say "stranger things have happened" but how strange would it be if South won the flag???
