The crowd figure from this round are a clear example as to why the SANFL should avoid clashing their fixture against an AAMI Stadium AFL game especially when the Crows are playing at home. Looking at the crowd figures from todays paper and it doesn't paint a good picture for the SANFL.
Norwood v Sturt (FRI N) Coopers Stadium - 6745
North v Eagles (SAT D) Prospect Oval - 2353
Central v Port (SAT N) Hamra Homes Oval - 5794
Wake up SANFL - this is another big example of why we shouldn't clash our fixture against an AFL game at AAMI Stadium. Any other timeslot or day and I would have thought the North V Eagles match would have drawn 3500 + spectators to see what was a brilliant game of SANFL footy.

They have to have a Saturday afternoon game for the ABC and 99% of North supporters didn't seem to have an issue with it.
The crowd figure yesterday was pretty similar to most North v Eagles games and considering it was also shown live on TV was good.
Perhaps I should lobby the SANFL to not play games against Geelong matches too?
Or perhaps we should play SANFL games Monday to Thursday?
The SANFL don't need to wake up, the club's that insist on playing Sundays that should wake up.
Saturday afternoon is SANFL football.

As a Crows supporter/Glenelg member I will ALWAYS go to a Glenelg match over an Adelaide match.
As Wedgie says we have to have at least one Saturday match for TV purposes.
I believe it us also up to us to help promote the SANFL and to ensure the non-believers are aware of how much better footy it is at the SANFL compared to keepies-off AFL style.

That attendance for Elizabeth Oval has to be wrong. I haven't seen such a crowd behind the northern goals such as last nights for years! Must have been a lot of freebies! i thought closer to 8,000 myself.

I agree 100%, also thought it was pretty packed out on the western side, the largest night game crowd we have had was about 7500 against Sturt, and i honestly thought last night was about that, if not a little bit more.

The rest of the oval was pretty sparse though Centurion, the Northern end only crowded when Centrals kicked to that end and both cheer squads were assembled there. My guess last night was about 6k, pretty close to the mark in the end.

Looking at the crowd at Aami and the fact there was minimal difference between yeserday's North/Eagles clash and the last time they clashed in the minor round when there was no clash its the AFL who should be looking at moving their games and not the SANFL.

I think that someone has overestimated the support of the Eagles in particular!

It is an interesting point to consider, yet as pointed out above in relation to TV commitments there is not a lot we can do, although we could as the licence owners of the Cows and Smears request that the AFL simply not schedule their games on Saturday Afternoons, considering the issues with West Lakes mall I think that is a part of an ongoing larger problem anyway.
I am not sure that there is a lot that the SANFL can do in relation to programming games to promote higher crowds as I think that we do offer a good range of options in that area. I think that getting the lights project up and running at Glenelg Oval could be one thing that could be implamented that would increase crowds and is something that we should be striving towards doing!

Heard a rumour today that the SANFL hasn't put any money into their own league promotions this year, pretty disgraceful that the SANFL administrators don't even care about their own league. To be honest I'm not surprised but it's still a disgrace!

You heard wrong, they've definately put money into several areas of promotion including TV ads, Newspaper liftouts, ads, the budget, etc. I can't believe anyone would believe such a ridiculous rumour.

well summed up Wedgie, you are on the money here, and lets not forget as well the weather was supposed be be on the dogey side which may have kept a few away, I reckon the SANFL would be quite happy with the round 1` attendances

Were we actually at the same game wedgie because I would have expected many more Roosters fans being the first home game of the new season. I have been to prospect for many seasons now and it was a lot lower than normal.

As an Eagles member/season ticket holder and Crows member/season ticket holder I made the choice to go to Prospect myself. Damn AFL have to go and programme saturday arvo games at AAMI it's quite ridiculous really.

Isn't footy a winter game. Why would possible dodgy weather put people off. I've never understood that statement when footy has been played in the winter for more than 100 years ?

Are you saying that North has less than 2000 fans then?
