Another forum is heading in this direction so I thought it would make a decent topic.
Port v (nearly)Everyone would be top eight so here goes re: non-Port feuds.
Glenelg v North.
Norwood v Sturt.
Central v Woodville-Torrens.

North v West

You could consider the trophy games to be rivalries. e.g. Glenelg v South for Peter Carey - Peter Darley cup

I think it has to be Port v Norwood first.

Glenelg and North is considerable due to the grand finals they played in the 70's and 80's (3 in a row).

Port and Sturt develped from the 60's onwards.

And Port/Glenelg as well, yes pretty much everyone v Port

I really dont rate the Norwood/Sturt rivalry at all compared to some of the other rivalries, but accept that supporters of these clubs may perceive there is some considerable rivalry there. But apart from the 78 grand final, i cant see where the rivalry lies, its more of a family thing though with the amount of players swapping between clubs, Oatey, Craig, Nunan, Zubrinich etc etc. I dont believe players would swap THIS much between clubs that were the fiercest of rivals.

Probably stems from an Eastern Suburbs derby type feel mate ... Personally I'd never rated us fierce rivals (also never lived that side of town), although I guess Norwood v Sturt has drawn a pretty decent crowd for at least the last 30 years.

This is probably on the wrong thread, probably needs to ask spell check.....but when was the last time Sturt and Norwood played a finals game against each other, i can only recall the 78 grand final. I'm not saying rivalries can only be forged in finals, but i really cant recal that many finals between the 2 clubs in the last 25 or so years.

You obviously weren't at Adelaide Oval for the Preliminary Final in 2002!

As much as I hate Sturt they are not our main rivals, The Swampies are (altough they've left for the AFL now and The Port Magpies are only 10 years old).

Off the top of my head 1980 Prelim, 1999 Elimination, there probably were finals in 2000 and 2001 - Spelly!!!!!

I know of perhaps three that I remember attending.
1983, Sturt vs Norwood, Qualifying Final. Sturt led by 30 odd points at every change and went down narrowly after a final quarter fight back by the Legs. The papers of the day, and also Neil Balme the Norwood coach, claimed the Legs "stole" the win.
1983, Sturt vs Norwood, Preliminary Final. This time there would be no doubt about who the deserved winner would be as the Blues pasted the Legs about Footy Park.
1985, Sturt vs Norwood, Elimination Final, I think, but I could have the games mixed up. If it is the one I am thinking of, Norwood beat Sturt comfortably. A couple of events that stood out were: Rick Davies punching the point post after he beat the fullback in a race to the ball and soccered it into the post. And from a kick in, Craig Balme's pin point pass to Rick Davies who was standing on the mark, the umpire called play on, and Davies side stepped an angry Balme and put it through the big sticks, a rare highlight from that game.

99 Elim (legs won) and 2000 Elim (sturt won) 2002 Prelim (sturt won )

I remember Balme kicking it straight to Davies but didn't realise it was in a final.

GWW. I am also unsure if that happened in a final. It could have been the first game of 1984.
I reckon Constance might know which game it was, he's talked about it in the past.

That Davies/Balme incident was round 1 of 84.

Central vs North are starting to build up a really good healthy rivalry, with both teams supporters trying to out chant each other. Also been plenty of players swapping clubs (mainly central to north) which has provided and edge to all the games in recent times, as all these players haven't swapped on good terms. Probably are the two current biggest supporter base in the SANFL providing bigger than average crowd. Add to that last years grand final plus an ANZAC day game at Adelaide Oval this year and i think we are seeing the next big rivalry in SANFL

Norwood v Port
Sturt v Port
North v Glenelg

The top 2 are the only 2 that have a really special feel about them when they meet though.

Probably because I only started going to the footy in the 80s...

But Port v Glenelg is my favourite rivalry.
