if the tempreature is say 100 or more degrees f like today, & it is a game through the home & away or even the major round should games be delayed or changed to a night game for the health & well being of the players & possibly the supporters as well ? i think it should be & i'd like to suggest that even though a couple of clubs would lose a home game (can make it up later) that play 2 games on the friday at elizabeth & norwood (perhaps thebarton if the lights still work) & play the next 2 games also at norwood & elizabeth on the saturday night

Ridiculous concept, current heat rules are good enough and cover heat a lot more than old rules used to.

I can remember a couple of years ago there was a drink break 1/2 way through each quarter, I asume that would still happen.

'ridiculous' wedgie !! that is a bit harsh my friend, so what would happen when (god forbid it does) a player suffers from heat stroke, collapses etc or worse even passes on ? don't tell me because they are fit it wouldn't happen because it can & i'd like to think no matter what precautions are made that it should still be looked at BEFORE a tragic event happens & NOT AFTER

yes that is correct they have a drinks break

That seemed to work well last time I saw it (about 36 or 37 deg from memory) so why change it?

people seem to forget they train for 5 months in this type of weather...

Most clubs wouldn't like it because they like to have two games on the day (league and ressies) becasue like we did today the fringe league players had half a game in the ressies and then half in the seniors.

Comes down to using teh current heat rules wisely, mamaging the players and educating them on preparing to play in the heat - the same heat they have been training in for teh past five months.

They're fit young men and as Dutchy pointed out they train in this heat for so many months.
If I can play sports in 40 degree heat and survive Im sure they can survive in 35 degree heat.
Don't remember anyone dropping dead in the SANFL because they were too warm in over 100 years yet.
South and West would get a great crowd at Elizabeth in a fantastic promotion to the SANFL to stop something that's never ever happened.
Perhaps we should move all game inside behind locked doors just in case terrorists might target an SANFL game too or martians invade the planet when a SANFL game is on too. While we're at it, let's move all SANFL games to the Telstra Dome when it rains just to avoid anyone drowning in the future. Would make as much sense.

Anyway, its more of an issue in trial games than it ever would be in the real season so lets just all agree that we should have the Foundation Cup back with 2 Friday night games and 2 Saturday night games programmed each week of the preseason at Norwood or Thebarton with no programming changes being necessary. Or god forbid the SANFL and clubs could use some common sense and program trial games later in the afternoon or at night, North didn't even risk a day game in Canberra being programmed preferring a twilight fixture, common sense.

But they usually train in the evening, not in the middle of the day when it's the hottest.

no mate i wasn't being rude i was making a point of actually being ridiculous as i don't think my original querey was ridiculous (obviously it was extremely) & i agree about 'the night comp' i remember when they weren't allowed cigarette sponsorship money anymore that foundation sa & then living health (from memory) was going to cover all sponsorships of sports that would normally rely on cigarette sponsorship but somehow it all just dissappeared after a few years

Good point about Foundation SA, must admit never considered it but yes it is a huge issue and it certainly didn't live up to what it was supposed to.

I have to agree with Bayman...we were discussing this issue at the West v Eagles trial today...extremely hot and it is dangerous no matter how fit you are...training in the same weather is not the same...imagine if you will that a young player out to impress for a league position pushes an extra yard on a extremely hot day...he want's to play in the league side and gives that little extra in a chase or tackle. Who then gets the blame if that player goes down with heat stroke or whatever caused from the high temperature? People have died in sporting events from their bodies over heating...common sense on the safety of players must come first. IMO.
Move games to a later time slot or do people object because it might clash with the precious Crows/Power games.
I have spoken...that's my 2 bob's worth.

I agree with Bayman and the point First blood makes especially. Players give that bit extra during a game, that's was my understanding of the the term "match fitness" when I played footy. I think there have been a few instances of cricketers passing out on the field on hot days, and I think Dean Jones went on a hospital drip after playing a long innings in a famous tied test (that was India about fiftenn years back but with GW getting in swing you are probably getting the same sort of heat nowadays in Oz).
I know the average cricketer isn't as fit as the average footy player but then footy is a much more intense game.
Better to consider the danger before it happens IMO.

Wegs, in your shoe days, you'd know, training is not the same as playing. Not even close.

In this day and age, there is no reason to play sport in this heat. When I played cricket, we'd play even if it was 42, 43 and I had no idea what damage it could do to me. Imagine if I was playing a sport that required me to run!

It's crazy saying that "they're fit". So what, even fit people die. And then what happens if someone who might not have looked after themselves the night before goes and dies on field, do they blame the club, the person, the SANFL. Why even contemplate it? It's 2008. I see it as one of those occurrences where people say "will it take someone to die before the rules are changed". Hopefully not.

I don't know what the solution is to playing normal home and away games, but playing "trial" games in these conditions is ludicrous - just scrap them.
