What do you want from your gameday SANFL Radio Coverage?

Hi everyone,

Well its just over 4 weeks to the first real games of the season and of course the first radio broadcasts of SANFL matches.

I'm pleased to announce that on LifeFM (107.9) John Nankivell & myself are teaming up to commentate the matches this season all the way through from Round 1 to the Grand Final. We will be joined by current players and special guests along the way.

We already have a couple of initiatives planned for the 2008 Life FM SANFL coverage which will be unveiled during the first few weeks of the season.

However I am keen for some guidence & feedback on what you, the fans, the most important part of our coverage, want on game day. And also what you don't want.

Cheers
Phil Herden

more 'around the grounds' (say 4 a quarter) updates please, obviously where possible, it helps to know when you've had a footy multi

No worries Bayman,

As a young (pre P plate) Woodville supporter stuck at home many Saturday Afternoons I lived and died by the around the grounds service from DB and the like so it has always been a focus for mine whereever I have been.

Last year at LifeFM we tried a few different things for around the ground including SMS scores direct to the commentaty crew and having a mini TV to give us the ABC game live in the second half.

This year we will be taking that even further into something quite revolutionary.... stay tuned. :D

as long as I can get scores around the grounds I am happy
and probably more regular scores from the game that is being covered, often if I cant make it to the game I like to listen to the radio and find that the scores are not given regular enough

edit: well done Bayman, got in before me :D

Thanks for giving us the opportunity to have some imput Phil!

Here are two suggestions that come to mind, depending of course on the resources that you guys are allocated at LifeFM.

1, Score Updates from around the grounds.

2, An opportunity for Radio Talkback after the game.

No thumping, pumping music for me thanks at least not during the game.

I do like to hear how the other teams got on...scores for the Ressies, Under 19's, Under 17's.

Otherwise I'd say just keep on doing what you guys do best by calling the game as you see it :D

Oh yeh and a live online video feed of the action would be nice

Regards
JAS

Seriously though, talkback would be a great idea - it always gives listeners at home or coming back from the match an idea of how other games went.

Yes, and straight after the game is the time when supporters are the most passionate, which can make for interesting radio.

Also, it would be good if other clubs provided the radio with stats printouts - not just us at Glenelg!

It's good to be asked Phil, well done. I'll echo the comments about regular around the grounds updates, the reserves scores maybe each 1/4 time break and a longer post match segment, often people have a kick after the game and once in the car heading home you've missed the scores and round ups. Do Life do a footy show similar to 5rph on monday mornings, 'cause that's a good one to catch up on what's happening. I'm just thankful that you guys cover the footy. Cheers.

What about an SMS scoreboard with a sponsor to cover it - eg the "Life FM Smorgon Steel SMS Scoreboard" - send out scores for all four games to those who register. Would be a real help to those who for whatever reason cant get to the radio broadcast. Could even do a play on SMS - "Scores More Scores update" for example.

*Maybe with the many stats people out there especially on this website you could phone them up at end of each quarter or just half/full time to get the stats that matter from around each ground.
*5 question interviews with players and faces from the crowd.

Coverage of every Rooster game would be nice Phil.
Seriously, just keep doing what you are doing. John Nankeville is one of my favourite commentators, who has a good knowledge of the SANFL teams.

You know that radio coverage is all I have available to me so a running commentary of what is going on, who is passing to who etc is so important for me to get a picture of who is putting in.

Frequent updates from around the grounds would be good, especially when North aren't being covered, would be nice too.

What about a fans eye view, where each week we get a game review from an 'in the know' fan. Maybe you could get a few from here, one for each club, who would do a say a 2 or 3 minute review of their teams performance. Best players, best plays and generally how they saw the game.

Anyway, keep up the good work Phil. Looking forward to listening on-line again this season.

It would be a bit hard to give u19s and 17s scores as they are at another ground at the same time and would need someone at those games to phone in the scores.
