Round 1: Bulldogs vs Double Blues

Until I checked the AFL draw today, I thought the Port vs Kangaroos match on April 1st was to be played on Saturday afternoon at AAMI.

Why did the SANFL program this unique game at Hamra Homes Oval to directly clash with the AFL game?

Will cost the SANFL at least 3,000 spectators and should have been played on the Friday NOT in a direct clash with a Power game in Adelaide.

Well it is only a Port game, should only cost half ur quoted supporters.
It will proberly judging on current form cost Port about 3000 bums on seats.

Centrals have been quite willing to go up against Power games and the gate has shown the effect is minimal if not negligible.

There's quite a few local clubs who will make it after their day games.

Im a fan of satdy night footy, but the SANFL needs to plan ahead better to avoid these clashes against AFL games.

Have a long hard think about it guys.

As long as they don't clash Port Magpies games with Power games and Crows games with other SANFL games its fine.
3000 Centrals and Sturt supporters will choose to be watching the Power instead of their SANFL side?

True, i dont thinkwe'll lose many supporters, but i just dont like the fact they are doing it as its not attempting to lure 'football supporters' to watch the game...i say dont give ppl the choice between an SANFL and AFL game...i know there are other options than going to the footy which kids and parents do these days anyway, but the SANFL is just shooting itself in the foot by doing this...and its not like its hard to avert...to attract as many possible people to the game, they have to limit their threats...and they are clearly not doing this on this account...this goes for any 2 teams going up against the awfl.

Wedgie, Don't you think the game should have been programmed for the Friday night?

True local people will have the chance to get to Elizabeth but I would have thought the SANFL would have wanted to showcase this game on a Friday night rather than a Saturday given attendance figures for previous Friday evening fixtures at Norwood and Adelaide Ovals

Not really, I think an outer suburb would suit Saturday night a lot better. If you worked in the Southern suburbs or lived south of town like a lot of Sturt fans would I imagine Friday night would be a write off, trying to negotiate horrendous traffic up Main North Rd.
Saturday Night on the other hand gives people a lot more time to get out there, better traffic, etc and I think Saturday night will suit the locals up there more too, especially those in the Barossa.

Friday night in town or at Norwood is a different kettle of fish.

Wedgie, good points, but they are moot if its clashing with a power game due to the points i raised in my previous post.

And i hate the fact that the power game could influence the amt of the crowd at the local game.

I honestly don't see how a Power crowd would impact on the game, I know they only have an impact on North games when we play Port but that hasn't happened for a long time.
Only the Magpies have to worry about not clashing with Power games, pretty simple really.
If you want SANFL games to avoid AFL games you'll have to have them played Monday to Thursday.
You might miss out on a dozen or 2 having it on the Saturday night but you'll easily pick up over 1000 wouldn't make it on a Friday.

Full marks for the programming, smart IMHO. I don't think 2 many Central fans at Elizabeth will think, hmm, lets go watch a crap side in the AFL about an hours drive away when we have our pride and joy playing down the road who are the reigning premiers.
You'll probably get bugerrall Sturt fans going out there, maybe a few more than normal because its Rd 1, but nothing's new there.
I really don't see the issue.

The Magpies games should also NEVER clash with Power away games. It effects the crowd figure at the Maggies a lot. Poor scheduling.

Don't worry Wedgie (I'm sure you won't)

Sturt, as always, will have great representation at the game. I know our group is looking forward to the occasion immensely. I think the game will pull 6-8,000 spectators which will ensure a great atmosphere.

Plus, we play our best footy under lights!

Just ask Carlton supporters if they think John Elliott's great!!

As for all the talk about crowd figures for this game, I think that we've passed the days where you can expect any kind of decent crowd to a SANFL match. About four thousand would be a big crowd I reckon.

The SANFL have wilfuly and deliberately overseen the destruction of the competition that gave birth to the Crows and Power.

Well done Leigh.

1) You've backed up my point MST in that Sturt or Centrals fans won't give a rats arse if there's a Power game on let alone it making 3000 difference.
(Im not sure why you insinuated I wont worry as I'm a staunch SANFL fan and will always worry about crowds, etc hence why I made the point with which you backed up)
2) Sarcasm was turned to the top of the dial when describing John Elliott as great.

I'll be there, no AFL game for me. This is my only "local " Sturt game this season, being on the edge of the Barossa. There will be a lot of Barossa people at the game I think. Should be an interesting experiment. Lots of Centrals people in Gawler & Barossa that play/officiate sport on saturdays, so it should be interesting to see how the crowd figure goes.

Strewth MST! 6-8,000? I hope you are right! But I think the days that Sturt v Central could draw crowds like that outside of finals are a thing of the past. If they draw more than 5,000 I'll jump on a plane to Australia and buy you a beer.
Glad to hear that you are making the trip however, I only missed the Elizabeth game maybe three times in all my years in Australia. Wish I was there to lend some vocal support. Should be a corker.
GO YOU MIGHTY BLUES!

6000 - 8000 people at HHP?

We'd be on an absolute winner if that happened.

and it wont to the sturt ones either, but those neutral fans who might have wanted to come down will now probably stay home and watch the puffs....

my point all along, which means poor scheduling by the SANFL...not a great move at all!!!
