THE Central District Football Club has established a football academy in a bid to strengthen its future.

Restricted to players in its region aged under 15, the squad of 35 will be put through an 11-week program designed to provide an insight into the requirements needed to play at an elite level.

Adelaide Crows development manager Alan Stewart and the team's high performance manager Stephen Schwerdt are among guest speakers to be involved in the program. The squad will also benefit from watching Port Adelaide's changeroom and ground warm-up for the NAB Cup match clash with Carlton and tour Crows' facilities.

The initiative has been implemented in response to the club's lack of success at the under-15 state championships in recent years.

"The academy has been formed with the sole aim of developing talented local footballers and giving them the best opportunity to play at a higher level," CDFC general manager Kris Grant said

Correct me if I'm wrong but don't most clubs have an academy style set up?

I know both Port and Glenelg definately have academies in their country zones. Can other club reps inform me of others?

Seriously its good the Centrals have done it, anything that can make footy more attractive to young 13-15 year olds is a good thing. I don't want to see the best young athletes being attracted to the inferior type sports such as soccer and basketball

I would have though "inferior type sports" were more like gymnastics, volleyball, badminton, chess and poker.

Soccer, basketball, rugby and the like are serious competition to Aussie Rules. Basketball and soccer have switched to a summer timetable though now (at least at the NBL/A League levels) which may mean that cricket has to watch them more closely than ever.

The elite competitions have switched to summer comps., the competitions that 13-15 year olds are being enticed to play in are in direct competition with footy.

Well done Centrals.
