is it time SANFL clubs started looking more at local talent?

Postby panthers 2008 » Mon Feb 04, 2008 9:55 pm

I for one think SANFL clubs should start looking more at recruiting local talent(in thier respective zones) than fishing around for interstate recruits.I understand that some recruits turn out genuine good committed players, but on the other hand there are those that do not pull their weight, and are a waste of time and money!
I would rather my club invest time and money in the zones identifying talent with the potential to play at SANFL level.
Maybe because "most" of the panthers recruits were ordinary(very ordinary to be honest) last year i am writing this post, but it is definately something worth thinking about!

Funny a South supporter should post a topic like this. Justifying your clubs official line / approach to 2008 by any chance?

Yes recruit local players, and enjoy the benefits that Norwood and West have had in the last few years. :?

Isn't a blend of both the best way forward. Up and coming youth, not yet stolen by the AvFL and a mix of experienced ex AvFL and fringe players not quite good enough for the AvFL

At Westies we had a cast of thousands doing pre-season,,, most have moved on but the clubs do prefer local talent as u dont have the relocation costs etc, the facts are there isnt that much local talent out there. A lot of recruiting is done from the country here, vic and nsw. Most of these lads approach your club and make there own way to try out so to say we should recruit more is hard.

Centrals are lucky they have a strong Barossa league and an abundance of local youth in densely populated areas as do Souths.

I am definately not saying 'stuff recruiting interstate players',just maybe a better balance,Tim Ginever thought Port magpiies needed more local/ country zone players this season.Weather Port have acted on this i do not know.
I am not trying to justify South Adelaides new policy of mostly local players, but i am hopeful with some time it will prove to be worthwile.

I think in this day age SANFL clubs are big businesses and have big profits to make. The easiest way to make money is to be successful on the field as corporate people/businesses want to be associated with winners.

Therefore the club try to recruit the best players possible whether there black blue from sa vic or Afghanistan.

I'm trying to figure out how this has made those club's recruiting more successful than others.

For example West have a very good recruiting ground here in the Riverland....

If Ginever and the Maggies were honest, that change in direction is based more on financial pressures than anything else given they over pay their interstate recruits and had to hold back match payments on 2 occasions for their senior list due to no cash flow.

What I am wondering is how long it will realistically be before SANFL talent scouts begin calling on the Gaelic Football Association in Ireland for recruits as is the case in the AFL. No doubt there would be plently of talent there, considering that most SANFL clubs are increasing their revenue streams I wouldent be surprised if they start making offers to players over there to come here to try out for the AFL.

Dogwatcher, if they did a number of kids under 23 in your zones (centrals and souths would win by a mile). There are country leagues in sa, the riverland league is nowhere near as strong as it was, the barossa league is a very strong breeding ground with more than its fair share of talented players

Ex adelaide player (SAANL & SANFL) can go to the riverland and in their own rights become TOP players yet couldnt cut the mustard in adelaide

Not sure about that BPBRB, I heard Jack saying on an ABC interview (after he had signed with South) that Port had made the mistake of overstocking with interstate players and not enough locals. I'm sure the coin is a factor but the on field results and a need to rectify would be the main reason.

Fair reply. But how does that explain Port's success from its Western zones with sparsely populated areas, declining population, declining standard in competitions, declining teams?

Over on the West Coast the kids i believe are tougher, they all wanna play football and u have some very talented indeginous kids there as well. Playing talented and tough football probably brings the best out of them. We went over as kids to carnival and the same with Melbourne and found there desire and strength above ours. Maybe kids in the city are soft and get too much and dont have to work for it like thses kids

Maybe. Or its to do with getting some fruit from the country zone with spent a lot of time and effort into setting up over the past 2-3 years.

If thats what Jack has said well he's losing his memory very fast.
It was Jack who went on the spending spree when he returned back at Port.
Whatever Jack wanted he got from Port.
Short memory some Port people!

With my mate Jeremy on 60K???? & i love him "as a footballer"!!! YUM YUM
It shows to much money is going to interstate recruits, but he's worth it :yawinkle: :yawinkle: the champ.
Doesn't leave much for the local talent.
Got to be honest though, its been happening at Port for donkeys years. :yawinkle: :yawinkle: :yawinkle: : Jezza!
