Stick it up the AFL Weekend: Round 7 - 2008

ROUND 7 (RIVALRY ROUND)
Friday May 9
- Norwood v Port @ Coopers (N)
Saturday May 10
- Sturt v West @ Unley
- Glenelg v North @ Challenge Rec
- Central v Eagles @ Hamra Homes (N)
(South - Bye)

This is in direct competition to the AFL's self-aggrandising wankfest "all-star" game.

Let's show the clowns at AFL house that SA footy fans don't give a toss about their self-importance and make sure we get 25,000 to the weekend's footy.

Oh and for those not going to Elizabeth that night, let's not watch the friggin game either...

(btw - when did West and Sturt become rivals? 1983?)

or have south play the bays, they have built up quite a rivalry, and maybe give north or west the bye. North and Sturt are developing a little bit of a rivalry lately too.

North and West are bigger rivals, was discussed in the paper last year.

You can never come up with 4 ideal "rival" games so its usually South and West that end up left over with 1 other team

Sturt & West may not be traditional rivals but you can't fault the other 3 match-ups..

1978. The Bloods popped Sturt's cherry that year well before Des Foster.

Wasn't Sturt the team (in 1978) who inflicted the last defeat on the then West coach (Fos Williams) in his last game as a SANFL coach.

Thats cause for a rivalry - C'mon Westies do it for Fos get revenge

I hope Centrals and the SANFL take hold of the anticipated boycott of the Vic v All Stars game and really market the Centrals v Eagles game and get a crowd of anything between 7 000 - 10 000.

Shouldn't it be the 5th most successful club misses out?
I agree with Jimmy on this, there should be some degree of history of epic clashes between two sides to make up a rivalry, in the grandiose sense of the word. Usually I'd expect Sturt to be playing any one of Norwood, Port or Glenelg on these occassions. I wouldn't pit us against North, because it has been so long since we played them in a grand final.
Maybe a list of clashes between the top 5 would be useful here?
From (my wobbly) memory:
Sturt:
has played Port 6 or more times in grand finals.
has played Glenelg 3 or 4 times in grand finals.
has played North at least once.
has played Norwood at least once.

Yes we have played West once also, and more recently than Norwood or North, but I can't help feeling like we have gotten the booby prize in being allocated that game.

Sturt and West have never been rivals, why put them together for the rivalry round then.
