SANFL talent goes un-noticed at the NAB AFL Draft

Postby eaglehaslanded » Sat Nov 24, 2007 10:46 am

What's up with that - What's going on with the 16 AFL clubs. The SA talent seemed to go missing today looking at the draft only 4 sanfl players finding homes at AFL clubs.

(13) Brad Ebert (WC) - port magpies
(32) Levi Greenwood (KANG) - port magpies
(33) Matthew Westhoff (PA) - central districts
(66) Tom McNamara (MELB) - south adelaide

This seems very odd considering 15 players were selected from the wafl comp.

What are your thoughts.

Pretty much the trend for quite some time now.I think our on field results in junior competitions says it all.

I thought we've been competitive enough without winning alot of games. The sanfl comp is awesome and needs to be recognised when it comes to the draft. 2 from the magpies, 1 from central districts and south adelaide. What was a surprise to me was no eagles or roosters selected. What's up with that.

Still another draft yet - Pre-Season and Rookie.

Would you count Marlon Motlop as an SA talent given he was on Norths U'17 list but was injured for a good part of the year even though he is really a NT born and bred lad and only came to SA this year?

It goes in peaks and troughs, same for players from WA and Qld (the peaks and troughs).
Only time to panic if it happens 3 years in a row.
Interestingly it was one of the poorer drafts too.

Also at pick (45) to hawthorn - Stuart Dew (not really from the sanfl I suppose as he retired after playing for the port power)

Interesting to see no one selected from north or the eagles. I rated the chances of Petrenko, Fairclough and Treeby.

Motlop's from North mate! And by all reports the best Motlop yet so stoked we can hang onto him since he's spent 2 years with us already.
Plus we traditionally come off worse in the PSD and RD.

Bad draft for the Maggies with neither Greenwood or Ebert getting drafted to a SA based side especially considering they're young blokes who wouldn't have been on much $$$$ so its not as though it frees up any $$$s or room in the cap for them either.

Very surprising I thought. Anticipated more than 4 going in this draft, given it was one of the shallower pools for some years. Great to see McNamara get his chance, shows a lot of promise. No surprises for Ebert and Greenwood, interesting selection with M. Westhoff. A few players that can count themselves very unlucky, with West's Alex Hutchins and Scott Blesing, Norwood's Austin Wonaemirri, North's Josh Cubillo as a smoky, and Woodville/West Torrens' Jared Petrenko, Nick Salter and Zac Hier among a host that could/should have gone.

Still the rookie draft though, so hopefully more of the local talent is recognised there. :)

Has he played senior footy at north or was it all under age. The AFL site listed him from wanderers that was why he wasn't listed on original list.

He has played only a handful of U17's games. He was close apparantly to ressies at one stage but he got injured. Interesting that most of the NT players in the SANFL come under license from their NT clubs. This is to protect those clubs financially when they are drafted hence that is why they are listed under their NT clubs and not their SANFL clubs.

Its awesome at finding interstate recruits - maybe our clubs are focussing too much on quick fix recruting programmes rather thab developing kids?

A lot of the SANFL's best players are not South Australian

Or maybe it was just our turn to have a lower draft. 4 out of 80 tho is a bit alarming

Look at the positives, so many quality young players stay in the SANFL.

There is still a long way to go with further drafts in a couple of weeks.

No you haven't. You've been telling us about inequities on a State by State basis.

If SA based footballers aren't up to it, they won't be drafted. That's all about the talent pathways and development programs. Hopefully they get smartened up a little.

Even in a 'shallow' year for the SANFL's Under 18 talent, SA still had more kids drafted than NSW or QLD...

It goes in cycles. There's been a couple of years when bugger all WAFL players were taken.
It's all the SANFL's fault.

That sounds pretty close to the mark, anyone who disagrees with that has been living on Mars for a while.
EX AFL players, guys that are great footballers, but wrong body shape, too slow but skillfull, or great athletes but skills arent good enough, make for a great comp, but lets get real here, the SANFL is littered with these types, as local supporters we see the great things these guys do each week, and every club has them. But they arent the blueprint what AFL clubs want. They are after STAND OUT juniors.
Fair enough the occassional oddball gets plucked from time to time [Nick Gill for example] but its the exception rather than the norm.

It's thought to be a very good year for SA draftees next year, alot of talent coming through. WA are strong this year, SA isn't. It happens like that, a few years ago there were alot of SA kids picked up and alot were very good.
