South Adelaide announce first signing

From the club's official website:

South Adelaide are delighted to announce that Jason Torney has rejoined the Panthers, where it all started for him. In keeping with the club's recruitment policy of searching for quality of character as well as football skills, the whole club is abuzz with the news of Jason's commitment to the Panthers for the next 2 years as he is one of our favourite sons, who has always represented himself and the club with distinction both on and off the field.

South Adelaide General Manager, Ben Kavenagh, announced Jason's signing, "Over the last couple of months the club has been very selective on who it re-signed and who it did not. With the status of all our 2007 players now known, we have always viewed Jason as the number one priority as far as additions go. We're only looking to add another couple of new players to the list now."

In addition to his playing role Kavenagh confirmed Torney's experience will aid the club in developing its younger players, "As well as playing, Jason will join our coaching ranks were he will oversee the development of a number of young South locals, many of whom showed enormous potential during the recent reserves finals campaign."

I still can't believe that he was delisted, but am over the moon that he's rejoined the club where he first started. I think his experience will be of huge advantage to the younger players and I don't think anyone would question his onfield abilities and courage - apart from Neil Craig, that is.

Well done to South for signing up Torney BUT, I question the statement that we only need to add a couple more players to the list now.
Unless those players are Judd, Reiwoldt and Bartell, South need more than a couple just to replace the players that have walked let alone the ordinary stock that are still there.

Congrats to Torney for showing something not many other people do anymore, some loyalty!

Good luck to him @ South.

Quality signing and hopefully the start of some good recruiting by the Panthers this year.
They certainly need to sign a few more players to bolster the list but it wouldnt be the worst thing for them to play these guys that played in the reserves in the league side and see what they're made of.
The clubs heavy recruiting in the past hasnt been fruitful so try the local approach, it couldnt be any worse than they have done previously. It would be great for the Panthers to finally make the Southern area a strong, successful area like the Bulldogs of the North.

If our luck runs to form he will now get drafted in the AFL! Strange comments about only looking at recruiting a couple of more players, given what we have lost someone is placing a lot of confidence in our younger lads or the recruiting money has all been spent on the clubs oval redevelopment.

What have we really lost, and how many of those players that were lost actually played for the jumper, very few if any is the blunt reality. If we continued to sign players that couldent care less about our club then we will only keep the perpetual cycle of being non competitive going. We have some very good juniors in our side that desperatley want to play for the club, so I have to side with Jack Cahill on this one, his way is the only way forward considering all the problems that have been going on for so long at the club.

It appears that there is a second signing at South,

From the Advertiser today,

"Former Western Bulldog Travis Baird 21 and 192cm has also joined the club".

The classic tweener.

Not big enough for KP
Not mobile enough for a flank/midfield.

He never really tore it up at VFL level.
He's a bit like Keiran McGuinness who did well for Norwood this year despite bad hair.

good signing by South but a key signing? he is 30 after all, I would think he would top up a list not be the number 1 signing for a club? :?

If Glenelg had signed him it would have been a big coup for the club and yes, he would have been their most significant addition. Jason Torney was a key recruit this year, and thank geezus he stayed with us.....

well done to the Panthers, Jason Torney is not only a quality footballer but a quality person, south will benefit both on and off the field by his signing

Some welcome news at last... a quality footballer and a quality person to boot. Good to see loyalty still counts for something in some peoples eyes.
As for preceding comments re our departing players to other sanfl clubs, they left south for one of two reasons, so take your pick...

1. They asked for more money, which is laughable considering some of their efforts in 2007
2. They were deemed "unsuitable" by the new regime.

Dont think you would have said that Dutchy if he was signed by the Bays.

Well done South. Great to see loyality and love for the jumper shine through. He always gives 110%.

I can take a sigh of relief now...we signed someone!!!
