SANFL - SACA - Test Match @ Football Park?

The following suggestion was made on the 5AA sports show this arvo by a caller who phoned in with the idea.

"Seeing that when the Grandstand at Adelaide Oval is to be reconstructed, there will not be any Cricket hosted during that Cricket Season at Adelaide as a result. No One Day Matches, no Test Matches etc. How about then the SACA and the SANFL getting together to organise the Test Match and or a Day Night Game at Football Park, in return for an AFL match or matches to be scheduled at Adelaide Oval,

The benefits being that everyone in S.A still gets the opportunity to go to the games rather than having to travel interestate. The SANFL makes all the usual Carparking, Catering and other Revenue over a five day test which wouldent be small change for the SANFL. The SACA then get the opportunity showcase and trial Adelaide Oval with its increased capacity as an AFL venue."

Thoughts?

Yeah I heard that one and he made some good points ... Didn't discuss the requirements and potential issues with putting in a pitch though

Wouldn't have thought putting in a pitch would be too much of an issue. Just need one of those drop in pitches like they've used at the Telstra Dome. I've always thought Norwood Oval would be a great venue for cricket. Not sure who is coming out next year, but if we get a minor country playing against us I would think Norwood's 15,000 or so capacity would be good enough for a Test match.

If AAMI kept up their no drinking in your seat policy we'd see the first ever mexican wave go around the back of a stadium.

I don't go to cricket games at Adelaide Oval but I'd definately go to one at footy pk, imagine the atmosphere of a day nighter there with 50,000 people, would be be great.
Good thing about cricket is its such a long game so there'd be plenty of breaks to get a beer, and unlike Adelaide Oval you'd be able to see what's going on while you're lining up for your beer too! :D

Fancy going to the test without pissheads spilling piss all over you and your kids while ya sitting in $90.00 seats or thinking they are getting funnier by the minute .That would be bliss!

Yeah, WSC was played at Footy Park back in the Packer Days, like it was played at Waverley Park, they used drop in pitches back then. They played at those grounds as the Cricket Board banned WSC players using grounds such as Adelaide Oval and the MCG.

I can recall a couple of domestic one day games played at Footy Park sometime in the late 80's i think it was. I dare say they probably weren't well attended.

I went to probably the last one and it wasn't well attended as it was wet and about 5 degrees, they couldn't have had a worse night for it.

I can't see why AAMI Stadium couldn't be used for cricket in 2008/2009 if Adelaide Oval's unavailable. A drop in pitch and a couple of sightscreens and that's all you'd need.

AAMI Stadium was actually where the first ever WSC game was played - before a crowd of about 500.

My grandparents have got a book that was put out after that first year of WSC. Might see if I can get hold of it next time I see them.

Norwood Oval hosting a test match - you must be joking!

It will be shorter square of the wicket than AO is - especially with the rope in at least 2 metres from the infamous wall.

The last time a cricket match was played at Football Park would've been in about 86 or 87. South Australia played a McDonald's Cup match or two there.

Looks like it's New Zealand and South Africa in Australia for next summer.

Norwood Oval - hosting International Cricket or even domestic cricket - you have to be kidding. Would need a lot of work done it that's for sure.

I could see the one-dayers at footy park drawing pretty decent crowds, but not sure what sort of crowd you would get at a test match out there.

Also can you imagine the outcry with the lack of parking. You wouldn't be able to use the shopping centre car park at all.

Yeah October 1986, SA played Queensland and then Tasmania the following day. Both games were affected by the weather.

They went on to beat Tasmania in Hobart in the final that season.

And what a win that was! Huge day by the South Aussies in their McDonalds coloured, McDonald's Cup outfits!
I reckon Hookesy and maybe Don O'Conner had days out in that final.
