SA Footy

Given there was quite a deal of discussion on a thread re the timing of the games on GF day I wonder what your thoughts are?

Currently with 4 grades we have 2 games at one ground with others at the opposition ground. Thus start times are 11:15 and 2:00pm roughly (2:15 if TV game) at each ground.
Night games are 4:55 and 7:40 with the 2 underage games normal times during the day.

If we go to the Under 18 competition as has been suggested often on this site then we'd see the times on GF and finals as the normal as you would not get one stand alone game either U18 or reserves at the opposition ground - costs for one game with staff etc just too much.
For example WWTFC v CDFC
9:15 U18, 12:15 Reserves, 3:15 League at Woodville rather than 11:15 Reserves and 2:00 League at Woodville with U18 at 11:00 or whenever at Elizabeth. Some ovals like Woodville could not do this in mid winter. May make upgrade at Thebarton worthwhile as currently Westies would be like Woodville as is Unley and Prospect and would need an alternative?

Would also impact on Night games - saturdays would be OK with say U18 at 1:00, Reserves at 4:00 and league at 7:00 but Friday night would possibly become a stand alone League game at say 7:15 with the U18 and Reserves the next day. For example WWTFC v Norwood Friday night at Norwood 7:15 then on saturday at Norwood 11:15 U18 2:00pm. Reserves rather than just one game the next day.

Would also mean less traffic on ovals as they would get a weekend off.

No lights and you'd have the GF/Finals times plus would need to fit in TV game at 2:15 somehow.

Just my ramblings but is something to consider re going to U18 or changing present structure especially as it gets harder to find volunteers to run teams with medical needs and trainers etc.

I'd prefer later than the current 2pm slot, 2pm just isn't early enough for parents who have kids playing grade 6 or 7 footy.

I'm all for the U18 scenario, and ideally would be great to play all three games on the one day, but I think if you have a 3 o'clock start, it would deter alot of people from attending the footy, as it'd mean you wouldn't get home til 6/630 ish which is smack on tea time, kids are hungry etc etc. Games finishing at 430 ish means home by 5/530. Food for thought though...

I agree Wedgie - if we needed those 5 minutes for TV and moved from 2:20 to 2:15 then should be for all grounds.

I believe - think I heard somewhere, maybe radio when introduced - was partly to try to keep/get attendances at SANFL when AFL at AAMI on Saturday nights - happy to be corrected if i've got this wrong.

More money for the clubs as they could buy dinner there in the club rooms!

Wedgie, my three kids would be feral and would discourage anyone from sitting remotely close to us i.e in the same room !! They are pretty narky after a long day at the footy and no arvo sleep !!

I brought my kids from the week they were born to last year with most games at 2.20pm start and they never had an issue.
A good parent can organise their kids sleep times so a different start with the same length of time involved should make no difference.
And even if they didn't, there might be parents who 2.20pms starts would tie in with their kids sleep patterns better so its not an issue.

And let's face it, there's no reason they can't have a nap at Glenelg games as its not as though there's any noise!

This has got me thinking though, when our kids were babies it wasn't so bad as we could get a park in the hospital on Main North Rd and stood near the scoreboard to it wasn't too far to walk to the car to breast feed or change nappies, how good would it be for South supporters in that same situation at Noarlunga when they can take their own car in.

I hardly think my kids sleeping is relevant considering I was taking the piss in the first place.
I wouldn't think a forum on footy is a relevant place to make serious remarks about your kids, which mine wasn't but which you construed to be and question if I'm a good parent.
As it is, we go to a footy club often for tea except it's at Woodville not Glenelg, as my father in law lives close.

That was the reason. I doubt if it made any difference at all, in my opinion.

I like the 2pm time for a league game. When it was 2.20pm it was getting too dark by the end of the game.

Dude, you added to your previous post as I was typing my response hence only part quote.
What I think is more of a issue is ensuring MAXIMUM numbers at all games. What that magical scenario is who knows...Start times, game days, venues, under 18's compared to 17/19's, night footy, double headers, al ot of scenarios that need to be looked at...

Personally I prefer the old 1420 start on a Saturday afternoon. Leave Sunday for the family...
