central v some afl clubs, but not what you think

now we know that central couldn't beat an afl team but you'd have to say their structure & team disciplines of the game plan is better than what some afl teams do

I honestly believe that they could beat a couple of the lower ranked AFL sides, and yes, their disciplined game plan is 2nd to none. AFL side that flood can't get back as quick as the dogs do, their run is nearly unbelievable.
They have been a 5 1/2 game better side than anyone else this year, the rest of the comp. has a long way to go yet.

They'd get absolutely smashed by the lower ranked AFL clubs (as would the rest of the SANFL clubs).

The problem is that SANFL teams would be/are suffering a double handicap: in both players and resources.

Not only can AFL clubs pick and choose the most promising talent, but they also (thanks to big wads of cash given to them by AFL central admin) have training facilities, assistant coaches, player welfare people, medical and physio staff etc that put the wealthiest/best-resourced non-AFL club in the shade. As a part of that, they pay their players full-time salaries that mean they can demand 35+ hours training/fitness/club time from them a week, rather than the 10-15 hours tops that a SANFL club could demand.

To give any non-AFL club a reasonable chance, you'd need to take away one of the two handicaps. That is to say, take the existing Centrals list and provide them for 12 months with all of the training, facilities and equipment that an AFL club has (and pay them at a level where you could demand a professional commitment of time from them). By the end of 2008, I reckon Centrals would probably be able to take the worst-performed AFL club.

Oh, for a national comp with Divisions. It might conceivably happen when Australia's population hits 60 million.

On a dry day at the G

RICHMOND 35-20
CENTRALS 5-6

On a dry day at Hamra oval

RICHMOND 25-20
CENTRALS 8-5

CD would not win a game in the AFL if they played in 2008
Even with number 28 playing mid season

The initial post is 100% correct.

Wouldn't get within cooee of a crap AFL side, but leave half of them for dead when it comes to how we go about it.

It's a great ride, fun for the whole family.

At least Centrals would put up a better fight than Norwood against the Cows. Perhaps the winner of SANFL GF to play Cows in pre-season.

Sounds like a good idea

Then it would happen

.... and then all SANFL fans would wish it didn't  Nothing good is achieved by having our premier flogged by an AFL team

Back on topic tho - definitely some AFL teams could look at how Centrals run their club I reckon. They do it very well.

As a supporter of the best football club in Australia I can say quite convincingly that the 17th best football club in Australia wouldn't get close to the 16th best football club in Australia. :D
Dogs versus Geelong's Reserves that won the VFL would be a good game though.

I can remember when WWT played Sydney swans at AAMI in 94. They killed us everywhere! :( Made us look very poor!

Any AFL side will beat 9 SANFL teams no problem!

Why not let Central be the third side out of S.A in the AFL, if they were it would be a good chance that they would get better crowds than the Power.

With Centrals current discipline and structure and the cash of an AFL club they would be every chance of making the eight over various non performing AFL clubs.

Obviously there would be no chance of an SANFL team beating any AFL side, but, would the SANFL team of the year be atleast competitive against the AFL wooden sponer. I still think not.

We'll never know. Certainly in the 1980s SANFL could match it with GOOD VFL sides, but as others have said in todays climate the money and facilities the AFL teams have now I suspect Centrals would get smashed. It would be interesting to ressurect the old Champions of Australia thing, with the premiers of WA, SA and VFL playing off for the crown. It would be another week of footy 8) Might even have to barrack for Centrals :?

Agreed - after all Norf did beat Carlton when both were top in their states. Has SANFL dropped back so far that they couldn't be competitive with the AFL bottom side?
