UMPIRES

When do they announce the Grand Final Umpires?

I will be there to support the Mighty Tigers in the Reserves game but will be staying and hoping to see a good game of footy between Central and North.

So I hope Mr Rowston is kept as far away as possible from the Grand Final otherwise he will ruin as he did games in the first two weeks of finals.

I thought the first week of finals both games were umpired terrible and then week two I thought the Glenelg v Eagles game was pretty good but then Mr Rowston botched up the 2nd game and it was back to soft free kicks galore. I thought the Prelim wasn't too bad but I only got to watch a half of that.

For those supporters with teams playing who would you like to see take control of the Grand Final?

The news that Doddridge and Richard Williams have both got gigs will not please any Central supporter. However, an umpire is an umpire and they will do the best job they possibly can on the day. I just pray it is not over-umpired.
Cheers

Geez Wedgie, there's a very fine line between those two!!

Rowston and Williams + one bullet = a vexatious situation!!

Williams in the SANFL is what Goldspink is in the AFL.

Agreed, he's a very good umpire.

Sam Hay has been good this year as well, not so sure about Doddridge, certainly better than Rowston though.

FFS if you think you can do better go out give it a crack....The Hills, ammos and SFL panel would love to have more umpires

The SANFL umpires are no better or worse than the players, in fact every given Saturday players on each side perform worse than the men in white.

1) Tassie, can you please enlighten me as to what my post about two umpires had to do with the performance, or otherwise, of players? The discussion thread is about umpires, not players.

2) I choose to utilise other means of profession to earn money and if I don't perfrom in that profession, my career timeline would be very limited. Where was the performance review and subsequent actions after Colin Rowston umpired diabolically (as agreed by most on this site and in the media) in two finals games recently. He ruined the SFC V GFC game......and his pennance? Another finals game the next weekend (that he subsequently umpired in similar fashion)!

3) The Hills, Ammos and SFL umpires do not get paid anywhere near what the SANFL umpires get (particularly if they get picked for any AFL games during the year), so hardly a valid comparison.

4) Let me put it this way; there are a really good crop of younger umpires in the SANFL that simply the umpire the game and let it flow without wanting to be the centre of attention like some of their senior comrades (ie. Williams & Rowston). SOme of the best umpired games I have seen this year were at Reserves level in fact. Perhaps give these guys some more responsibility come finals time and show the younger guys they have an opportunity come September/October if they perform during the season. Surely that is a better outcome than the two finals games Colin Rowston ruined in this finals series! And how many Grand Final's has Richard Williams umpired in recent years? How about giving some of the younger guys a chance Shane Harris?

Couldn't possibly do any worse IMO.

1. I find it incredulous that people criticise umpires for mistakes when in reality compared to the mistakes players make in a game they perform much better particularly when it comes to instantaneous decisions (i.e. decision on which target to hit vs decision made on a free kick)

2. Colin Rowston was not diabolical in the Elimination Final he was consistant in his decion making (something fans bemoan). I'm not going to sit here and type that Colin was perfect but he had no impact on the game's outcome despite what Partland wrote or the diatribe unleashed on db.org in the week after the game. That game was decided on the fact that one team was harder at the ball, two, was better in its execution of tackles and three from halfway through the second qtr one team was actually to run and carry the ball linking together with system vs one team kicking and hoping (becasue they were behind the ball flooding back to prevent Glenelgs run therough the guts like they showed the week before agaisnt the Eagles - good tactics by McGowan but he robbed Peter to pay Paul because once Sturt won the ball at half back they had no targets to kick to) except on four occasions when they opened space created a loose man and then passed to Chambers.

3. before you stared calling people diabolical and "wanting the centre of attention - give it a go hence why the references to SFL, ammos and HFL then you (and others on this site who take the soft option by citing umpiring as a factor in why their team lost) might appreciate how hard a job it is.

4. Yep there are good young umpires in the SANFL but having watched some twos and ones games Richard Williams is still IMHO the best umpire in this state. The best umpires should get the GF. Doesn't matter how many he has done in the past if he is still the best he deserves a crack at the GF.

Interesting debate and good points made by two very astute Football fans in Rhino and Tassie M both have years behind them (so to speak) and both made good constructive valid points without being over the top like many on this site - ME included!

I can see both their points in the main so I will call it a tie IMO. I will say after watching the Sturt / Glenelg replay out of interest re the umpiring, I would say that Rowston's performance was one of the worse at Senior level given it was a final. As a neutral I thought Sturt did get a very poor run from all 3 umpires but as Tassie said it didn't affect the result in the end. That was ultimately determined by Benny Moore's goal and Feast's miss.

As for Richard Williams, I have always found him to be the best umpire in the league despite the hysteria that surrounds him and the fact he gets blamed for bad decsions in games he is not even officiating in!

Is that because Rowston has modelled his game on Williams? I'm sure they were siamese twins at birth!
These blokes need better training in hot situations...their speed with pi5s week penalties is appalling and ruins great footy.
I blame the Umpires coaching for their inability to transform these blokes to the shadows they should be!

That would be why he has done so many, he still is one of, if not the best umpire we have.
