Yellow Balls

Postby Wedgie » Tue Oct 02, 2007 7:46 pm

Been meaning to bring this up for a couple of weeks but just remember when watching the Prelim Final again.

Why do we have to use yellow balls for games that start at 3.10pm?

Up to 100% of the game is played in conditions not even impacted upon by lights.

The SANFL have no issues changing from Burleys to Sherrins each quarter or half but for some reason insist on having a yellow ball for the entire game? I can only assume it is to maintain the same condition for the entire game?

This really doesn't make sense to me, it is well documented that Burley's and Sherrins react differently in different situations, a lot more different than a same branded ball with a different colour. They have no issues changing balls that react differently between quarters but can't change a ball with the same brand but different colour between quarters. WTF?

They should have used an orange "clash ball" on Sunday.

Wedgie it's all to do with the lights. They have to use the yellow ball under lights for some reason and because the lights are on for the last 1/4 they want consistency for the whole game. Mind you if we ever got a rainy day it could be quite dark by 5-30 6pm. What I really don't understand is why they have to start so late in the first place. Put the 19's back with the 17's where they belong.

There were no 19's there on Sunday, North's U17's won a flag.

I think it's great to have 3 games on one day, and I can see the time will come when it will be the norm during the minor round, U18's, Ressies, then League, will be a good thing IMHO.

Yeah but that's my whole point if you read my post. They aren't consistent with the brand of ball they use all year so why be consistent with the colour of it? And IMHO the brand has a hell of a lot more impact than the colour.

I agree. I also think the home team choice of ball should be used for the entire match, or even better still use a uniform ball for the whole league...

Yep preferably Option C (your last option), could handle Option B (your first option) but the league needs to get rid of Option A (ie what they do at the moment).

Don't they swap so each club gets a chance to play ith each other's balls?

PS why not play with a red ball up to half-time, yellow ball second half?
& ffs, why doesn't the GF start @ 2.20pm on SATURDAY?
why is housing so expensive?...

Maybe the thinking is that they want the same colour ball for the whole game as the players are used to it.

Therefore, a late start means a finish close to 6pm when the light could easily be bad and you'd need a yellow ball. So play it safe and use the yellow ball for the whole game in case its needed at the end?

Dunno just guessing here ....

Despite all that, I have to agree with Punky why are these games being started after 3pm anyway???

The game starts late due to having the Under 19 Grand Final on.
