Centrals v Eagles GF Again: YAWN

Postby NFC » Mon Sep 24, 2007 12:06 am

YAWN.

And yes I'm a true SANFL supporter. I’m a member of Norwood and I attend every week, I went down last week to the Adelaide Oval as a neutral supporter, and I always promote the local comp whenever I can, but seriously, another Centrals v Eagles GF would be a terrible result for the league. Yes the two sides can't help it that they're successful, but why oh why can’t someone else make the GF for a change?

I’ve attended the last 7 Grand Finals and I’ll be there again in two weeks, but I’m getting mighty sick and tired of the predictability of the competition. It was great seeing Glenelg make the finals and terrific to see them play with so much passion and so many of their great fans rock up. North fans have been turning up in their droves, but once again the non existent fan base of the Eagles will result in another poor GF crowd. How can such a successful team have such a pitiful support base?

If the GF was between North v Centrals the crowd would be up around 35k. If the same thing happens again and it’s ANOTHER Centrals v Eagles GF, then we’ll only get about 25k in attendance because really, how many neutral fans really want to rock up to see the same old stuff for another year? I’ll be there, but the longer this ridiculous stretch of only two teams being contenders (well, really one…) the longer the league will suffer.

We’ve seen tremendous crowds attend for the first two weeks of the finals, but we’ll see a drop off next week because there’s basically only one set of supporters that’ll turn up. So please North Adelaide, for the sake of the competition, PLEASE WIN NEXT WEEK!

Well said.
Bulldogs & Eagles fans need not respond.
We have a fair idea what you will post.

IF it was to happen again - and I know there is still one game to go next weekend - that would make it 4 Grand Finals in a row. Would that be a record for consecutive Grand Finals between the same two clubs? Spelly?

Well I'll respond by saying that these threads from NFC are a yawn because this is the third time this year the same thread has come up.

And I'll bet that the four consecutive Grand Finals played between Sturt and Port in 1965-68 were a yawn too.

Do you blame us? When the final siren sounded, every set of supporters bar the Dogs and Eagles felt as though their hearts were ripped out. Absolutely terrible result as a neutral fan, and with the result about 10k suddenly dropped off the GF attendance.

Considering Sturt won the last three of those contests, then NO.

Seriously, Port and Sturt have large followings and didn't have to compete with the AFL(then VFL) for the peoples and media attention.
GF attendances since 1991 have slowly shrunk and lot of people think that the current Central-W/T domination has exascerbated this trend.
Port & Sturt set, a then, GF crowd record in 1965 and that rivalry probably helped the SANFL.

May be more appropriate to raise your concerns at the next Norwood AGM. Let us know their response.
"This windfall from the Adelaide Oval decision cannot be turned into a moment when the SANFL sells off the farm to underwrite its lazy league clubs."

Look I am sorry Spelly but your supporter support on the scoreboard hill was nil. I saw Central and North but only a ripple of support from your lads.

On this basis alone bring on a North V Central grand final

Not true, some of us had our hearts well and truly ripped out long before (and on a weekly basis) the finals started

Indeed we did. I'd kill to just play finals football again. I hoping we’ll be there next year but realistically it could be a while yet. :(

So its important to have people on the hill but not in the stands. Take away the booze and how many would have been there on the hill?

We know we don't have a large supporter base (due primarily to lack of success in the 80s - just prior to the AFL) however everyone of them is just as passionate and even more so.

If North play better then us on Sunday, then and only then will they play the GF. It's not CDFC or the WWTFC clubs fault that the other 7 clubs haven't been up to the same standard as the Eagles or the Dogs.

Noones blaming the Dogs or Eagles, everyone is blaming the other 7 teams but blame isn't the point. The point is its not good for the league. Crikey, it's not rocket science.

Actually, don't accept it. And dooooo something about it.

I'm sure Centrals and Eagles supporters are bored of seeing each other at the finals too.
