Chris Kendall has written an article in Sportsbeat ,the free sports magazine distributed to pubs and clubs. In it he suggests 10 ideas on improving the SANFL.For the benefit of those with out access to this most excellent publication I will paraphrase his suggestions and invite your comments.
1)Reintroduce the preseason comp
2)A night game every round
3)Introduce 3 points for a rushed behind
4)Offer clubs a bonus point for exceeding 20 goals in a match
5)Four players on the interchange bench
6)Port Magpies take the initiative to move 3 home games per season as curtainraisers to Port Adelaide's AFL games.
7)Coaches allowed some comment on umpiring performances
8)A rule change to penalise teams that do not have at least 3 players behind the centre square at all times
9)Introduce 1 round per year as AAMI Stadium round
10)2 country rounds per year with all games played in regional centres
Edit:for whatever reason point "eight" seems to have turned into a smiley.I don't know why and am too pissed to care

I disagree with points 3, 4 6 and 8 but full marks to Chris as he's always thinking outside the square, I'd love to have him in charge at the SANFL as despite the standard improving crowds slowly but surely are getting worse especially in the finals as shown in my post about finals crowds.
Chris always has great articles to read, 10 times better than the crap Rucci sprouts at time.
Its time for a SA Footy magazine with people like Chris Kendall and Zac Milbank involved.

Fixed.

Click on "disable smileys" - the 8 and ) together is the code for the "cool" symbol. Don't worry, I had trouble with that myself, wondering why that happened.

1)Reintroduce the preseason comp -
Ambivalent 2)A night game every round -
too cold in June July and early August keeop for first 8 rds and last two IMHO3)Introduce 3 points for a rushed behind -
leave that sh!t for the AFL4)Offer clubs a bonus point for exceeding 20 goals in a match -
Nup5)Four players on the interchange bench -
maybe cost is an issue6)Port Magpies take the initiative to move 3 home games per season as curtainraisers to Port Adelaide's AFL games. -
yeah great give them more marketing opportunities7)Coaches allowed some comment on umpiring performances -
provided it is not personal
A rule change to penalise teams that do not have at least 3 players behind the centre square at all times -
unworkable so one team can have players in the centre square free (they are n't behind the square from their perspective) but the opposition has to keep players behind them easy target coming out of defence...Am philosophically against artificial rule changes based on offside etc9)Introduce 1 round per year as AAMI Stadium round -
good idea10)2 country rounds per year with all games played in regional centres -
good idea but we at Glenelg still have nightmares from Whyalla 1995...

1: Seems much the same as now really, but with a bit more organisation and formality.
2: I like the idea as a general quide, but I don't think it should be done as a rule as such. Why force clubs into a night game they don't want?
3: Silly idea IMO. 3 points for a poster perhaps but if the attacking team aren't good enough to get the ball over the line themselves then I don't think they deserve more than a point.
4: Not needed. Points should only be earned through victory. 20 goals leads to good percentage which should be enough incentive.
5: I like 3 on the bench. I think it brings the game back to more skill and toughness if teams aren't able to run another off their feet through an extra midfielder. Also what we get is a player going forward to rest which doesn't happen as much with 4. As an aside what about being able to replace a player completely if they're injured before half time? Once replaced they can't return at all for the rest of the match.
6: I like the idea from a broad perspective but it all depends on how it's done. I'd hate to miss watching a dogs v PAMs game because I had to fork over $25 to get in (which I'm just not willing to do). However, if the SANFL got an agreement with the Power that any SANFL season ticket holders could get in if their team was involved then it would work, and the Power might just be interested in getting a few thousand extra fans along.
7: Fair enough, but would have to be kept in check. It's not fair if coachesare allowed to put pressure on umpires through criticism.
8: Don't like it. I think it goes against the spirit of the game. Even in half a ground there's enough space to get clear and keep posession if your skills are good enough and you work hard enough. Otherwise you go to a contest and take your chances in a 50/50.
9: AAMI round? Like all 4 games played at AAMI? Sounds awful. I remember the last few years of having games there and 3000 people (a reasonable average crowd for SANFL) is terrible there. all 4 games on the one day might attract 10k across the day but no more than 5k at any time. Surprised Chris even suggested this because there wouldn't even be close to enough to make it worth opening the gates anyway.
10: Don't like this one either. I think all clubs should play in their zones more often but instead spread it across the whole season. I think some of the media coverage will be hurt if people aren't available for the extra hours of travelling to regional centres. Given the support Life and RPH in particular have given I think it would be remiss of the SANFL to make them choose between travelling out to the country or not covering the round at all.

Sorry to all you CK lovers but I think Chis is desperately seeking publicity because some of those suggestions are ridiculous.
I give the nod to nos. 5, 7 and 10 and agree with Tassie about mucking around with the rules.

As far as rules go I'm all for it being play on off the post and if it shaves the post and goes in its a goal, if it shaves the post and goes through for a point its a point but if bounces back into play its play on, that's the way all other sports are and I think it would bring excitement to the game.
Only thing that stuffs my idea up is if a side's one point down and the siren goes and the player has the shot after the siren and it hits the post and comes back into play they still lose and I can't see away around that so leave as is.

Who cares how all other sports are? Ours is the best, leave it be.

Other sports are like that because if it doesn't go between the sticks it's nothing. In our game you get a point for a miss. Hitting the post should always be a score (except for the behind post of course).

lol, if the SANFL had their way that would be the case.
People who don't follow the SANFL but it get rammed down their neck by me find it unbelievable when I tell them the story about the SANFL calling in Central asking how they can get the rest of the league to be as good as they are.

Not a huge fan of all of these.
Like the idea of 6. Think it is worth the shot to try to bring some "Port" supporters back to the maggies.
Agree 7 - to a certain extent.
10 - earlier this year I posted on here that one round each year should be played in the country. South keep their Encounter Bay Easter game, and so have the bye over this country round. Over the course of two years, tems will play one "home zone" and one "away zone" country game.
1 - Not a big fan of if it is going to be full footy games - maybe if it was as a "country cup".
Alternatively, how about the idea of nine-a-side games on Fri nights at the Parade from the start if Feb. Games could be 2 x 20 min halves or similar, could play 4 games between 6.30 and 10. Maybe three weeks and a final during Feb.
