If Fremantle can survive why can't Port?

I reckon Port Power should remerge with SANFL club Port Magpies ;)

Port arent dead yet, but the WA clubs have a different structure over there.

When Freo were in financial trouble 10 years ago when they lost around $5 million in 4 years, they didnt pay a dividend as they had a structure where they paid around 80% of their profits back tot he WAFC. So in those years they didnt return a dividend. The WAFC then suspended their royalty fee for 4 years from 2003-06. In that time Freo made $4.24 million and were allowed to keep every cent of that. This ended up over $2.8 million in dividend that they were allowed to keep. West Coast profits also helped out.

They pay a flat fee rent to use Subi. In 2007 it was $3.05 million. If the $400k figure is around the mark, then they (and WC) pay around $1.5 million less to use Subi than Port (and I assume Adelaide too) pay to play at AAMI.

PORT ADELAIDE FINANCIAL POSITION

In response to a report appearing in The Age today by Caroline Wilson regarding Port Adelaide Football Club’s financial position, the SANFL responds with the following comments:

The SANFL is fully aware of PAFC’s financial position and has been working closely with the club on a daily basis for the past six months to address the situation and identify a range of solutions.

The SANFL has kept the AFL CEO Andrew Demetriou fully informed of both short and long-term financial strategies for the club.

As the holder of Port Adelaide’s head licence, the SANFL recognises its responsibility to take a proactive role to ensure the club’s long-term financial viability is not placed at risk.

The SANFL is confident that the new PAFC Board, led by its new chairman Brett Duncanson (who is the former President of the Port Adelaide Magpies and highly respected administrator) and the highly skilled executive group under the control of CEO Mark Haysman, will work closely with the SANFL in re-establishing the club as a strong financial, debt-free entity within five years.

The fundamental difference in revenue streams between Port Adelaide Football Club and Adelaide Football Club comes down to two major areas:
1 Membership
2 Attendance

This accounts for $3.2m difference in revenue between the two clubs.

The SANFL is also confident Port Adelaide’s loyal partner Bianco will fulfil its commitment to the club in 2009 and 2010.

The Port Adelaide Football Club has a fantastic coach in Mark WIlliams and an excellent playing group that has high expectations for 2009.

The SANFL calls on all Port Adelaide supporters to get behind Mark, the players and the club to ensure that 2009 delivers the appropriate outcome for this very proud South Australian club.

The SANFL is not in a position to make any further comment at this time.

SANFL are a funny beast

We must treat the clubs as equal.

Thus we will require each club to pay the same for the use of the oval.

Does this mean that to maintain income they would double the amount of the crows lease if Port were to fold.

OH well **** em

we will get through this and be a force on and off of the field and win premiership after premiership to shove it down their throat.

By memory the last time we were in financial trouble was the early to mid 80's. We soon won flags after that. Bring it on.

The SANFL as I understand has 9 major shareholders, the nine local clubs. If 7 local clubs were in financial strife would they not vote to save themselves before saving the Power?????

The current SANFL board and commissioners have been at the wheel while 7 clubs made losses, 1 AFL club the Power made massive losses and player payments in the SANFL spiral out of control as well as some VERY HIGH PAID ASSISTANT COACHES.

??? The SANFL were more serious about monitoring their own backyard the SANFL (Salary Cap, Huge Coaching Panels etc) surely then some help may have been offered to the Power. So I ask the question is this solely an AFL probelm or a joint problem???

This is not pointed at any SANFL Club as Id say all were guilty of something, Sure the leaders of the SANFL should have stepped in to correct our own problems earlier.

That myth was exposed when the Port Power AFL team was formed. How many of these loyal and passionate supporters still go to Magpie games? Turning up to Adelaide Oval during the SANFL finals, dressed head to toe in teal blue doesn't count.

The Port experiment has failed, we in SA don't have the population for 2 AFL clubs, I think that is obvious now. Where to now? We are in tough times perhaps a bye won't be required when Gold Coast enters in 2010?

Port were doing well when Brian Cunningham was in charge, there was no talk of financial problems.
he had membership and attendances well up.
Port need to get their own house in order and appeal to a wider fan base this is the crux of the issue
not stadium deals.

Agreed, poor crowd figures are a result of poor on field performances and with money becoming tighter in household budgets Port has found itself in the wrong place at the wrong time. Regardless of how well we play this season I dont see attendances to games at Footy Park leaping up over 30,000 too often this year.

My guess is we wont be the only club to suffer in the next 3 - 5 years. We just need a Gutnik and Pratt to throw some millions around.

UK Fan, we must have really hurt you over the years for you to dislike us so much....dont hate us 'coz you 'aint us mate. ;)

A chap that I work with signed up himself and four of his family as members of the club, he tells me that it took him several attempts to get through to the club on the phone, when he did so he was informed that the phones were going flat out with new memberships and season tickets......

I dont know alot about the new CEO of the Power, yet he clearly knows how to market the club which makes me wonder if the whole thing hasnt just been a successfull marketing campaign for the Power - especially considering the timing of the announcement at the same time as the receiving of the Stimulus Package!

Plus Freo have more members than Port.
It's all the SANFL's fault.

A mate of mine gave me all the money he had in his pocket as he said all Crow fans should help keep Port alive. I dont think the 60c will go very far though. Smart arse.

According to the CEO, in the 24 hours after the crisis news broke they sold 4000 classic memberships (non-ticketed membership) and $100,000 worth of season tickets.

Why do people simply assume Port run an expensive ship? Their football dept. is in the bottom 4 in dollars spent in the league in the past couple of years.

I have read that per $ spent in football departments over the last 5 years Port by far have the best $/win ratio. Will try and find it.
