Hi Theri, not a prob. Actually you will find that in another thread where I explain the timing of the celebration of Easter, I state that Christmas is celebrated at a date which the Church selected. It is not the actual date of the birth of Christ as no-one knows exactly when he was born (there were no birth certificates issued in those days) and it is believed now that the actual year may be out by about four.

Sorry Theri, I completely missed your post re the Origins of Christmas. I was away at Clare when you wrote it and did not read that section of this thread. As for the reasoning behind choosing December 25, you may well be right. The Church sort of plucked that date out randomly and it does make sense to have it at the time of a pre-existing celebration. After all, Easter is now at the Passover time (there are valid reasons for that though).

On the 7th day god said rest and go to the footy so yes SANFL should have a day and night game to open the year
