Chiggy elevated to "Great of Glenelg", how does that sit with the black and yellow/gold in here?

I’ve made my thoughts on him as our president clear previously.
Let’s not taint the thread.

On field he is a Great of Glenelg, has served the club off field in tough times which is admirable but he hasn't done a great job TBH.

Whilst I didn't agree with everything Chig did as president, particularly early on, you cant fault the last three years where he has played a significant role in ensuring there is still a Glenelg Footy Club and we are now Premiers of the best* footy competition in Australia.

Back to the similarities with 1973.

Only thing missing from the top five in 2019 compared to the top five in 1973, is the word "North" ("big four" alive and well again ;) ) Port, Sturt, Norwood and Glenelg were in the top half of the table (acknowledging Norwood didn't actually play finals as it was the last year of the final four.

And the spooner was the same in 2019 as 1973, Westies.

* not best in terms of overall standard but best in terms of suburban tribalism, relative standard of footy and value, well to me anyway!

Norwood did play finals in 1973. It was the first year of the final five. Norwood beat Port at Norwood in the Elimination Final and then lost to North by 5 points in the First Semi Final, also played at Norwood Oval.

You mention Westies, in fact one of the things Doug Thomas got right is the fact that he always included North in the Big 5 rather than talk of a big 4 (see the 1985 Channel 7 production - That Grand Final Feeling for verification). How a team that has now won five premierships can be considered in any big 4 above a team that has won 14 premierships has always puzzled me.

The only thing I can think of is that the so called big 4 were the 4 monied clubs of the mid 70s to the early 80s. That was the only time when the big 4 was really mentioned and it was only for about 8 years.

Nothing flushes North supporters out like a reference to “the big four” ;)

My bad on the start of the final five though

There was a Final 5 in 1973
The Elimination Final was Norwood v Port Adelaide

NW 23-13
PA 17-13

Two things I can recall from that game

Port Adelaide finished 4th, Norwood 5th
It was unfair for PA to play this game at Norwood Oval
Adelaide Oval was used on the same day when Sturt narrowly defeated North Adelaide

The other was my favourite alltime PA player, Johnny Cahill played his last match
I thought it rather unsporting that a fellow NW barracker , sitting behind me , heckled Cahill throughout the match
His most repeated abuse was that Cahill needed a wheelchair and was past it
I had enough by later in the game and told him to #$^#$%#$%
I was a schoolboy , he was an adult, but defending Cahill seemed to be an obligation

As for the BIG 4 , from memory, it was a media hype about the BIG 4 financial clubs in those times
It had nothing to do with the on field success, as teams like SA and NA had won a lot more premierships than GL
However , GL were a much younger club than SA and younger than NA

That 1973 Grand Final is perhaps still the greatest grand final Ive ever seen in the SANFL
GL 21-11
NA 19-16

In round 15 at Glenelg Oval, GL annihilated NA
GL 33-20
NA 8-10

Remarkably the total points scored for both games were similar
RD15 [267]
G/F [276]

Glenelg’s only loss in 1973 was to North at Prospect.
I was under the impression “the big 4” was in relation to these clubs having such large supporter bases compared to the rest of the league.

But when North are playing well they have always drawn as many people to their games as the other clubs. The most recent example of that was last year's Grand Final.

It was more to do with the finances of the clubs in the md 70s to 80s and the associated success the money bought. North were broke for most of that time.

As I remember the late Noel Pettingill may have been BOG in that Norwood Oval final?
