But seriously, 2 points:

I have trouble believing that figure. It didn't seem any more packed than the Port match, though it was still a very healthy crowd.

And full marks to the GFC for catering to that crowd. As far as I can tell the beer lasted all day, and the much-maligned Southern Hill toilets did have a functioning urinal!

disagree mate, as from where i was sitting the crowd was significantly higher than the port game, i was sitting next to magpies in the 80's 7 little bayman 7 i said to m80's that this is a lot bigger than the port game so i'd expect this to be 9,000 to 10,000 & i was wrong too

Agrred the outer side was far more packed than the port GAme and Snouts Hill looked more congested too!

How many kids were there? Absolutely sensational - sign 'em all up as Tiger Cubs...

Tiger Cubs! - I don't think so.Why is everybody talking as though ALL the crowd were there to support Glenelg.I go to EVERY Sturt game and I saw people there that haven't been to the footy for years, dressed in their Double Blue colours. The many people around me , in front of the cricket club were definitely pro-Sturt and I do acknowledge the crowd was probably split 60-40 in favour of the Bays,as it should have been at their home ground, but please a little credit must go to the Sturt followers as well!!

P.S.The SANFL don't count the children(all those under 18 yrs)as part of the crowd numbers

Here is a table of the average crowd for the season after every round from 1991:

As you can see, the most dramatic fall after Round 13 was 2001.

Key to that is that we are currently having the 3rd best figures since the Power came in in 1997.

1997 was the last major "jolt" to the structure of SA Footy ... when watching AFL at AAMI became a weekly event.

Prior to that some large crowds to Magpie games tended to skew the overall figures higher.

Yes, they definitely do include children - I checked with one of the redcoats working on the gate!

Spot on, when we drive into grounds where we can park inside the gates the red coats always make sure they know how many kids are in the back seat to ensure they get the numbers right.

Reckon you can TB - doesn't the story go that a Glenelg player snapped a goal but the goal umpire got hit on the head from something thrown over the fence and so claimed he was unsighted, and the field ump bounced the ball in the goal square??

This was the game that Peter Carey broke the Australian games record, until, of course, the AFL took over and only recognised VFL games

I could be wrong - but I thought that happened at Unley, and in either '71 or '72. Wasn't there myself of course, so am happy to be corrected.

There was a Sand Bag involved and ironically it occurred at Brighton Road in that game in 1968.

Just for the record, Sturt beat Port in the 1968 GF that Season.
