I just hope centrals can rebound from their first loss in 20 years or whatever it was at Unley and start another era of dominance at the playground.

Round 2 means nothing except 2 points. Seeing how you measure up against good opposition is more important. Last year the loss probably showed Roy and the lads where they were at and what they had to improve on. I'm sure they already knew, but nothing hammers it home like losing. I also think Sturt learned from their 4 losses in 2002 to get it right on the day in the end. You never like to lose, but it happens. The very, very best teams even drop a game. They stay the very best by learning from that loss.

Legend has it  that we meant to drop the 4 games in 2002 prior to the GF as Sticks had worked out the Centrals game plan and saved all his tricks for the only one that mattered !!!

Legend also has it that Clarkson deviated from the seasons plan heading into the GF and it ultimately cost him his job.

The truth lies somewhere in between, methinks.

He had an offer from them during the off-season, but rejected the offer as he was to see out his contract with Centrals (another season to go). Allegedly, his refusal to accept some responsibility for having deviated from club plans (along with a couple of 'fresh' issues) saw him and the club part ways well into the new year. Then he accepted the earlier offer from the Power.

Both parties have moved forward since, long term it seems to have benefited - we've won 4 more flags, he's now an AFL coach.

Going off topic and in the wrong forum but watching Footy Classified last Monday Clarkson is looking more and more like a "Thunderbird" puppet. Coaching must be getting to him.

Postby Grahaml » Thu Apr 03, 2008 12:24 pm

My understanding of Clarkson leaving was largely about the SANFL side. The club wanted him not to do it, he was dead set on doing it and in the end both parties agreed their interests lay in different directions. At least that was what I thought the situation was. There may well, and probably is, more in it than that, but regardless SMAC is right, both parties moved on. I don't think either bears any ill will towards the other, and right now both parties look like they were in the right. Clarkson has shown he didn't need to inherit a great team to get results, and the dogs have shown they can continue on dominating even after losing key players.

And while I know you made the comment in jest, Blueboy, there is certainly a ring of truth in that. 4 losses leave a lot of material to work with on where to improve, not to mention a great motivational tool. Sturt came out firing and we didn't. Sturt put the score on the board when they had the wind and the ball in the first quarter, and we hardly put up a whimper until it was too late. This is the reason why 2002 was so good for Sturt fans, and so bad for dog fans. Throughout the year, the dogs were clearly better. Unfortunately, they don't hand out flags for that, just for whichever team comes up with the goods on the last day.

Anyway, I've moved on from that at least and since the club has won 4 flags in 5 years since that day I'd say the club got over it pretty smartly as well. And to date we haven't been caught napping in a final since. When we lost to the Eagles, a lot of our boys had bad days but mostly it was the good play of the opposition that kept us out of it. I think our boys could at least hold their heads up knowing they went in hard and played to the game plan. Not sure we did all that in 2002.

top of the table first v second? after round 1? i wouldnt really be to worried about the positions on the ladder after round 1, top could be playing bottom and have more of a game on their hands than if they had played 2nd.

Interesting to see the league team this week. No change to starting 18 (I think) with a few quality names coming onto the interchange in Luke McCabe, Chad O'Sullivan and Cam Faulkner.

I noticed there is no Danny Boyle listed, so unless injured he must have been dropped to the reserves already. Maybe his undiscipline act last week cost him, but I would prefer him in the team as he adds a bit more height and running strength to our back half.

I'm really not sure who will drop out from the extended interchange bench there is probably a case in point for all to keep their spot. I would probably think Lee Spurr will play 2's and I'd hope Luke McCabe plays for his experience. Obviously Buckets is the back up ruckman so in my opinion it will be between Sully and Cam Faulkner. I think Sully can probably do with 1 more week in the magoos and although Cam didn't play last week, if 100% fit, I would probably take him in as the extra interchnge player. I only say this because I think he has a bit more flexibility than Sully and I think we have plenty of "onballers / crumbers" to rotate. I just think Cam can play a role across half back if required, beause once again, I'm a little concerned with our undersized backline.

Of course Roy and the match commitee will make the right decision based on match ups against our opposition, the "Double Poos" !!! I think we will probably go into the game as very slight underdogs (pardon the punt !!) and although not 100% confident, I think we will be stronger than last week and can hopefully put in a full 4 quarter team effort and get the bikkies on the day.
I think the game could go either way and reckon there will be nothing more than 3 goals in it.

GO U DOGGIES...
