He does have a point that the SANFL could raise the cap if the AFL handed out the cash. Problem is the AFL want to keep the 2nd tier leagues at a huge distance so that they can't become the alternative entertainment to the AFL itself.

The SANFL could do this anyway. They dont need the AFL for this.

The SANFL is a far better entertainment "product" (AFL speak)/viable sporting alternative (football speak) to this little black duck already!!!

The WWTFC is pleased to announce the signing of Aseri Raikiwasa.

Raikiwasa, 21, joins the Club after playing 34 games in 3 seasons at the Port Adelaide Magpies. The versatile key defender has represented SA at U18 and U20 level and will add further flexibility to the Eagles backline.

On the signing Michael Godden said “Aseri not only has the ability to play a defensive role but also run and carry the ball so we think he’ll be a great addition to our backline. His flexibility to be able to play on a variety of opponents will be a real plus for us. Aseri is a quality person and someone that has a real desire to improve so he’s a good fit for us”.

The Club is also pleased to announce the appointment of former player Scott Mathews as its Reserves Coach for Season 2015. Mathews replaces Jarrad Wright who has taken up a role at South Adelaide.

Mathews, 36, played 96 games for the Club between 1996 and 2003 winning the Club’s Best Team Man award in 2002. Mathews was appointed Senior Coach at Trinity Old Scholars in 2012 where he has spent the last 3 years as well as being part of the Eagles development squad coaching staff in 2014.

On the appointment Football Manager Trent Hentschel said “Scott played at the Club for 8 years and also worked with our development squads last year so he has an understanding of our culture and the structures we have in place. Scott has a passion for developing young people so we’re really excited about what he brings to the Reserves Coaching Role.”

Please join the WWTFC in welcoming Aseri and Scott to the Club.

The South Adelaide Football Club advises that the following players will not be continuing in 2015 –

Frazer Dale, recruited from Carlton, 20 games, 8 goals

Todd McKay, Port Noarlunga, 33 games, 8 goals

John McDonald, recruited from Sturt, 18 games, 7 goals (23 games previously with Sturt)

Cam De Visser, recruited from Sacred Heart OCFC, 9 games, 6 goals

South Adelaide General Manager – Football Neill Sharpe said it’s always disappointing when players decide to move on.

“SANFL football is a serious competition and requires a genuine commitment and a real passion to play at the level. We’re disappointed that Todd McKay and Frazer Dale have decided to move on as we think their best football is ahead of them. Unfortunately the demands of the competition aren’t for everyone.

“John McDonald and Cam De Visser have had some injury issues in recent seasons and are at stages in their working life where they feel they need to concentrate on their careers.

“We thank Frazer, Todd, John and Cam for their contribution to South Adelaide and wish them all the best in their future endeavours.”

Frazer Dale leaving South is a massive loss for us.

One of the top players of this year.(very underrated)

Sad to see him go.

How would the sanfl fund such an increase. As it is they seem to be living off income from afl football in sa and that only stretches so far.

No, the SANFL is living off the income of Football in this State, it's the game of the people for the people so SANFL has every right to get what it deserves/is entitled to from the SMA.

That's not what I asked now though was it. You cant simply just keep ramping up SANFL salary caps because the SANFL competition only generates so much itself through patronage, sponsorship, media rights etc, and like it or lump it, you can only squeeze so much juice out of the Adelaide Oval/AFL lemon. The issue of course is both the AFL clubs and the SANFL seem to be making claims on the money the AFL clubs are generating.
All I'm saying is that part of any solution to inflate salary caps is to grown the competition, if you cant do that and generate more interest and revenue, then I cant see where the extra money will come from. (in a sustainable way)

Fair enough, I was looking at it from the whole SANFL/AFL/SMA debate, which is being done to death elsewhere.

From the Salary cap point of view I'm on record on ehre saying the SANFL (and VFL/WAFL) salary caps for stand alone clubs should be 10% of the AFL Salary cap.

So when I take over from Gill, I wont be touching the TPP for Footballers in this country but I wil be directing 20% of it to the three major State leagues so they can raise their salary caps so players who mis out on the AFL dream but have worked hard in trying to get there can earn some decent coin and those that get cut can still earn soem reasonable money whilst getting their "real" life in order - face it the AFL world is unreal.

Yes 20% three ways is 6.67% so to get to the 10% of an AFL clubs salary the State leagues and clubs are going to have to contribute too.

In many ways 10% is still way to low for the State leagues, no they are not as good as the AFL standard but by christ the SANFL is not 90% worse as a than the AFL.

In my baised opinion I rate SANFL footy higher than AFL footy for my tastes.

The actual amount of the cap doesnt concern me. If 10% made sense then so be it. ... however if it all comes from the two Adelaide based clubs that puts them at a competitive disadvantage to other AFL clubs and in the long run spells trouble for all footy in the state.
In an ideal world if the SANFL could negotiate a set % of AFL cap (if it was 10% or 8%) so be it, but then this cap would be funded fully by the AFL annually. The SANFL would then get a reduced, fixed (possibly indexed) dividend from the Adelaide oval as well as the license fee payouts for the next 9 years. At the moment they seem to be geting 3 million from the AFL plus nearly 2 from the SANFL clubs as license payments, plus Adelaide Oval.... I'm saying increase the AFL 3 million to 6 or 7, and return more dividends from Adelaide oval to the clubs (within reason).

That way the "load" (and I don't mean that in the negative sense) on the two AFL clubs at Adelaide oval would be spread across the whole AFL, rather than just 2 clubs.

The fees paid by AFL clubs back to the SANFL clubs for drafted players needs to accurately reflect the investment made by that SANFL club on his development. At the moment it is no where near adequate. When that is lifted then the salary cap can be lifted.

Rated Dale highly. Dependable by foot and very good overhead. Will be missed. The C7 commentators found it impossible to call him without using his christian name which was odd.

Both Mckay and Hourigan were highly touted as juniors and were on the radar of AFL clubs. Both now find themselves outside the SANFL.

McDonald and De Visser probably come as no surprise.

Exactly. Tiered payments based on what round they're drafted in, bonus payments for Brownlow finishes, that kind of thing.
