Bullshit.

Give Rob Gerrard a call, or someone, just anyone. :(

Yes, let's not bring new people to the SANFL...

agreed that it won't be hard to find someone to do the job of sponsoring, but even if worst came to worst does it even need a damned sponsor?

I'm sure the Crows and Power could do without an extra ivory backscratcher to support the bloody SANFL mini-league which predates their clubs by decades.

I hate the SANFL as a corporate body in so many respects

Hmmmmm

I remember a couple of months ago reading in the paper that Coke were pulling out of kid sponsorships & I wondered how that would affect the Mini League.

My PERSONAL preference as per the Messenger Article was for a junior game across the wings with 50m arcs freed up for kick to kick or other entertainment.

What many may not realise is that in recent years BOTH teams at a home game were supplied by the HOME club. (One wore the club gurensey, the other the Red Coke guernsey, event at Prospect)

I have not seen anything official about this but if this is the way forward it may be up to each club to organise the games.

Hopefully plans can be put in place for clubs to continue these given most currently have an infrastucture in place organising the squads.

Again personal throughts but to bring new fans to the SANFL you need as many "WOW" moments as possible and playing mini-league certainly used to be one of them.

I for one would be real keen to see it continue at South if for no other reason than seeing Wedgie's boy in a South Guernsey!

and if the local AFL teams got behind it, would we see matches like Glenelg v Power and Norwood v Crows in the mini league?

I think this has merit... gotta be better than (insert SANFL team) vs Coke FFS.

I doubt the AFL would approve of the idea though. Doesn't the AFL own the AFL clubs' guernsey designs?

this can be done...

What an astounding decision.
The SANFL could get potentially an extra 400 odd spectators to the grounds in every round. The schools have Aussie Rules highlighted in their agenda, bit of a plus going on the number of schools dropping footy from their curriculum. The kids get an inkling of their suburban side outside the AFL. Where's the downside in this ?
Good suggestion above re the clubs organising the re birth of the mini league, what would the costs be ? 40 tickets for parents, piece of piss considering that there'd be 500 free tickets given out every week. Can of Coke (well maybe not now) & a pasty for the players, well there's $120. The only worry I can see is insurance, someone out there would know the ducks guts on that surely.
Both my kids have played mini league, really looked forward to it & had a ball. One said it was the best day of his life.

We have a sponsors night at Chookland tonight, may find out a bit more & see if there's any chance of a revival.

Short of all that, sign up your kids with the local amateur club or you'll find your out there watching the offspring ruining their chances of hetrosexuality by playing soccor.

Another twenty years and the SANFL will be a glorified bush league.

Nothing funnier than seeing a fight break out during a mini-league match...

Because of obesity? What a cop-out. A can of coke once a week at the footy isn't going to hurt kids. If they really cared about taht they'd take the 600ml bottles off the market.

One of the biggest causes of obesity IMO is shopping centres, malls, food courts etc that are open all weekend, where kids work and hang out rather than doing stuff outside (even if it is just going to the footy). I trust coke are going to pull all out all their support to these sort of places too?

As much as I agree - that isn't the point unfortunately.
Moderation can't be expected.
There's so many other factors involved as well. It's the mere "advertising" and saturation of the product name (not that it's not everywhere anyway!) that they want to avoid.

If anyone saw A Current Affair a short while ago with the guy who drinks, I think, the equivalent of 50 cans of coke a day would look in awe!

So give em coke zero, obesity problem solved

This is just an excuse, I suspect the SANFL were looking for one.

Thats probably the problem, all they would have is a business degree. The wouldn't know anything about or care about the game itself, all they are worried about is how much money the comp makes. Its all a business decision, they couldn't give a **** about the sports future. All they care about is the bottom line so they can say "Look at me, Ive made some decisions thats saved the SANFL x amount of dollars, but I don't care about the future of the game, as long as I have a job next year."

applause...............

Right on the money.

There is a book out at the moment called "The Triumph of the Airheads" that examines just this problem. These money obsessed types can only think 5 minutes into the future.

Perhaps you should be asking your own Club's GM's about this, as I think it might have been their decision, rather than the SANFL management. I also believe Coke haven't withdrawn any sponsorship money, just asked for it to be redirected.
