bayman wrote:apart from a 10 minute period late in the first quarter norwood controlled the whole game & looked very good & very sharp for the match, they also played a more direct style than they have in recent years, they had winners all over the ground while we had blokes who popped up here & there with some brilliance but that was few & far between, while it was only a trial you can see that norwood have improved, while glenelg are lacking a key defender or two, also i noticed (don't know which one) but a gowans was watching the game

I miss going out to Norwood Oval drinking in the surrounding pubs before staggering on to the bus to go home. Hopefully I can come home at some stage this year to catch the mighty Redlegs in action.

Big Phil wrote:Went down to The Parade and had a look at the 2 games on offer tonight and was pretty impressed with the home side in both games.
RESERVES:
NORWOOD - 3.0 5.4 7.5 9.7 = 61
GLENELG - 2.4 4.4 7.9 8.9 = 57
GOAL KICKERS:
NORWOOD - Skinner, Ah Chee 2, Baust, Schild, Holm, Benbow, O'Malley
GLENELG - Wallent, Grosser 2, Couch, Fosdike, Duldig, Trembath
BETTER PLAYERS:
NORWOOD - Skinner, Thomas, Ah Chee, Dawe, Baust, Holm
GLENELG - Fosdike, Couch, Wallent, Duldig, Donnelly, Willoughby
After a pretty scrappy start to the game, to be expected being the first hit out of the year, both sides had their moments and as shown in the scoreline, it was a pretty even contest throughout with the Redlegs getting up in the end by 4 points. Meadows recruit Brady Dawe impressed in ruck and was given an opportunity in the league game after a solid half in the reserves while youngster James Skinner impressed for the home side with strong hands and good kicking for goal playing out of the goal square.
Young Aboriginal recruit Roland Ah Chee also impressed in the early stages of the game kicking a couple of good goals and also getting an opportunity in the later game after a solid 2 quarters with his new club. Brad Thomas was good sweeping across half back and Josh Benbow had a few opportunities in front of goal impressing also. Crows recruit Will Young looked a bit patchy in the ruck for the Redlegs early but improved slightly as the game wore on.
For the Bays, regular league player Matt Duldig provided a strong target across half forward while big Trent Grosser proved a strong focal point kicking a couple of goals. Jack Fosdike was very impressive on the ball as was Eagles recruit Tom Couch. Crows Irish recruit Brian Donnelly had a few good moments playing across half back while Justin McConnell started up forward, finishing the game out playing on the ball and getting a few quality touches. A good first up win for the home side.
LEAGUE:
NORWOOD - 4.3 10.6 13.5 18.9 = 117
GLENELG - 2.3 4.5 7.8 9.8 = 64
GOAL KICKERS:
NORWOOD - Gallagher, Schultz 3, Phillips, Terlich, Littler, Vlatko 2, Lower, Lee, Tyrell, Ah Chee
GLENELG - Backwell, Hinge 3, Kirkby, Panozzo, Cranston
BETTER PLAYERS:
NORWOOD - Trotter, Terlich, Lower, McGuinness, Puopolo, Phillips, Lee, Littler
GLENELG - Ruwoldt, Backwell, Hinge, C.Kane, McGregor, Guilhaus, Mules
Both sides went into the game with a few quality players sitting on the sidelines. Norwood were missing Campbell, Massie, Borlace, Rowe, Hughes and Jackman to name a few while the Bays were missing some big names such as Fisher, Allen, Murphy and both the Grima brothers. The Redlegs certainly got off to a fast start kicking 3 or 4 quick goals early and from there on in, seemed to control the contest, running out very comfortable winners by 53 points. Essendon recruit Andrew Lee played the entire game from CHF and impressed with a strong work ethic and some quality marks and sheppards.
The Redlegs assocation with Sydney Swans recruits continued with youngster Dean Terlich performing wondefully well with his attack on the ball, pace and finishing skills. He will prove to be a quality player at SANFL level and will be sure to exite the Redlegs fans. Former Toger and Fremantle Docker Jack Juniper played up forward as well and did a couple of nice things while Keiran McGuinness looked as though he hasn't missed a beat controlling the half back line just as he did back in 2007. Youngster Toby Schultz looked impressive kicking 3 goals but also showing some versatility to play CHB in the late stages of the game.
Skipper James Gallagher had some good moments including kicking 3 goals while David Trotter continued his late season form surge from last season racking up plenty of possessions asnd using the ball well. Simon Phillips was nippy around the packs, getting front and square where all good crumbers should be while Roland Ah Chee showed some promise after coming up from playing the first half of the reserves game. The only concern for the Redlegs from the game would be injuries to Luke Jericho and Crows listed Aaron Kite with both players injuring knees and finishing the night on crutches.
For the Bays, there were a few promising signs considering the quality of personel out of the side for various reasons. Brisbane Lions recruit Wayde Mills played 3 quarters of the match off a wing and had a couple of good moments but does need to work on his disposal. Mark Ruwoldt played well on the ball and across half forward and Brett Backwell had an impact up forward and on the ball despite only playing about half the game time in total. Lachlan Button and Aaron Day were given the opportunity to fill the key defensive posts left vacant by Paul Sherwood and Sam Rudolph but as the game wore on, the Bays lacked discipline in the defence half when it came to manning up.
Seb Guilhaus took a fair share of the ruck while Daniel Kirk and Trevor Cranston were tried in tandem out of the goal square throughout various stages of the night. Norwood fans would be very impressed with what they saw and can anticipate more improvement with some quality names to come into the side still while Glenelg will be keen to work on their defensive set ups and making sure they have better structure coming into their forward line, which will come with the likes of Todd Grima and Matt Duldig to still come inot the side. A solid hit out for both sides first up tonight with Trevor Hill's men clearly the dominant side throughout the entire course of the game.
