For those who have a beer at the footy with their mates, perhaps its time for "Round Round"?
Can you guess where I'm calling from, the Las Vegas Hilton...

And Norwood have the bye.

Ironic really.

Round 12 would have been perfect if the Central/North game was played at night.
Every round should have a Friday night game (Norwood,Adelaide,Elizabeth), a Saturday afternoon game (Non-lighted arena), Saturday night game and a Sunday arvo game.
This would give SANFLcoholics a chance to see every game each weekend, which I did when I came over to Adelaide in 2003.
If one person does it, it's insanity. If millions do it, it's religion.

Venue not finalised I suppose, but would have to be either Leederville or Fremantle.

The byes will always be a problem. That combined with a number of clubs that doesn't work with the length of season they want. The fairest 9 team system would be to either have 18 rounds or 27. Obviously the first is too short, but also the second is too long when you add in the state match and finals. The result is chaos with which order teams get the bye in to try to make the draw as fair as possible in terms of who teams play, where and keeping a reasonable order of home, away, home, away etc etc.

I think the idea of the premier missing out round 1 is a terrible one. Round one should be a home game for the premier to unfurl the premiership flag from the season before. Doing that round 2 or later would be a darn shame. The SANFL's position of rotating the last round bye around the comp is ok, but personally I would allocate it to the wooden spooners from the previous year UNLESS the same team would get that bye as the previous year in which case I'd give it to the 8th placed team. So if you finished bottom year, after year, after year (not that it would happen of course.....) you'd have a round 23 bye every 2 years.

Interesting North have had a public whinge though. Surely that sort of though is best kept in house or at worst make a remark to a journo about it being a tough draw if asked. From what I've observed in the past making a public complaint like that will gain no friends, cause no changes, make some enemies and get people into the "if only we didn't have such a tough draw" mentality.

Geez Grahaml - another chance to have a crack at North???

Whilst you may not agree with the club's stance re the draw you would have to agree that some of the points are very valid and if the complaints from North to the league fell on deaf ears then I have no problem with the club making a public protest / announcement.

I would think that the nafc is the sanfl club who is the most public in airing it's views (positive and negative) on a range of football matters. Pity a few more clubs didn't follow suit.

Dutchy - as for your comments re crowds, take a look back at at the few seasons prior to 2007 / 2008 re your crowds!
Away from the Bay you lot hardly add any numbers to the crowd figures at most of your away games. We certainly have a much better travelling support than the Bays do!

Dreb,

I don't think any sensible Bays fan would deny that over the last two years we've had a very full bandwagon. Yep prior to 2007 our crowds were poor (home and away) but you can't deny that over the past year our away crowds at Elizabeth, Norwood and Alberton to name but a few can at least be described as healthy.
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

Bit sensitive aren't we, Drebin? I make comments based on what I think, nothing to do with who it is regarding. Do you honestly think that the actions to make a public complaint will help the situation? I can't see it helping at all, just hindering and to that end I question the decision to do so.

Actually, with 9 teams, it's 16 rounds or 24. (You don't play yourself: this comment is not intended to be a Benny Hill joke.)

And with the inevitable bye each week, for each team to play 24 games you would need a 27 week minor round. (It's a 23 week minor round for everyone to play 20 games now.) Obviously way too long.

Hardly a novel problem, though. Back in the 10-team glory days of the SANFL you played half of the teams twice, half 3 times. The AFL has the problem and will continue to have it for the foreseeable future. The only way to avoid it with the accepted length of Aussie rules seasons, is to have a 12 (or 11) team comp, as they did in the VFL glory days.

There will never be one simple solution because the fairest answer isn't going to be the most lucrative; so you're always trying to maximise your cashflow in light of the current successful/high-drawing clubs, without being too mean to those on the bottom of the pile.

Fair enough graham - maybe I am sensitive but the bottom line is the draw for North is crap and sometimes you have to be vocal in protest!

My suggestion for the Bye ... 9 Year cycle shared, commence with the lowest ranked team from the previous season - so last season Westies would have had the final round bye (and then again in 2017), in 2009 that honour would go to South (and then again in 2018) etc ...

CP, that is essentially the format they have now. I can't remember how they picked the order but essentially it doesn't matter, because in 4-5 years who knows where sides ranked 4 and 5 this season will be?

No worries Drebin. I was really just posing the question whether it was in the NAFC's own best interests to take the action it did. No intention to bash a rooster or anything.

SimonH, you have successfully made a fool of yourself! On one hand you tell me it's 24 rounds, and then you say it would take 27 weeks to play! How is it you manage to cope with the idea of the SANFL having 23 rounds but only being able to watch your side 20 times? It never bothered you those three weeks missing? It takes 9 full weeks (which strangely enough is also 9 rounds) to have each team play all others. You don't play yourself unless you have an internal trial during the bye each side would have to have. Thus any system where all teams play all others an equal amount in a 9 team comp would be in fact a multiple of 9 rounds. And the general idea of what I was trying to say (and I think at least 99% of the population understood it) is that there is no viable way to have a perfectly fair draw. There will always be teams better or worse off unless we happen to move to a 12 team comp as you say.

My main concern for the Round 23 bye is that if it falls the way of the top team, [which it has recently] they have 21 days between their final minor round game and their 1st final.
Just give it to the previous years Wooden Spooner and if they're good enough to be affected re-above, Im sure they would happily cope.
