Im hoping the Crows want to ease him back into it with 2-3 quarters in the reserves and then a league gig next week. That would only leave one more week for Symes to play with us and he would be qualified (wishful thinking).

I know you don't rely on AFL players but if we could get 3 games out of Symes that will make a huge difference to our side if he is then allowed to play with us come finals time.

He's only been out 6 weeks! Not as though he's coming back from a knee...

Griffin dropped by the Crows too...is he being rested full-stop, or just being rested from the AFL?

Symes, Westhoff and Griffin, if all INS for the Dogs, change the landscape of this game significantly.

Rested full stop, giving him time to get over a hip complaint.

I heard John Reid tonight speaking with KG and Cornesy...the assumption was that he has been jumped in the pecking order by Maric, but I thought Reid said Griffin was going to be "rested" but also playing for the Dogs...

Hmmm, now I'm even more confused.

In all the time those two have been playing at Elizabeth they have been the most reliable indicator of Central's form IMO.
Glenelg have a good act, they should be able to haul themselves over the line against this Dogs line up.
Bays by 3 goals.

I think we have only played 1 game (ANZAC) all season with 2 Gowans in the side.

I checked this statement on sanfl.com and discovered that it is correct!
Perhaps the importance of having both Gowanses was something that applied more to previous years that now. You have a 75% winning ratio when only one is in the side these days, pretty nice strike rate at the best of times.
I'm gonna sit back, crack the top off a Pale Ale, and watch the Double Blues prevail

Hey Footy Fans,

CENTRAL DISTRICT FOOTBALL CLUB LEAGUE SQUAD
SATURDAY 21 JUNE 2008 Vs GLENELG @ HAMRA HOMES OVAL, ELIZABETH

Full Forward: Luke Cowan, Daniel Havelberg, Scott Dutschke
Half Forwards: Chad O'Sullivan, Heath Lawry, Ryan Williams
Centre Line: Cameron Faulkner, James Gowans, Leigh Westhoff
Half Backs: Adam Switala, Daniel Schell, Brad Symes
Full Backs: Andrew Hayes, Yves Sibenaler, Richard Cochrane

Rucks: Jonathon Giles, Paul Thomas, Matthew Slade

Interchange (from): Jason Mackenzie, Elijah Ware, Brayden O'Hara,Trent Goodrem & Luke McCabe

Wow, that's a pretty good looking league side, now with the addition of Justin Westhoff. Unfortunatley I think Luke Cowan will stay in the 2's for Westy's inclusion, unless Roy Laird choses to go with 3 tall forwards. Also great to Symesy back in a Dogs jumper, slotting in the half back flank and one would think that from the extended bench, Trent Goodrem and Brayden O'Hara will play in the early game.

This is how I would line the team up, and it's a pretty good one mind you...

Full Forward: Daniel Havelberg, Justin Westhoff, Scott Dutschke
Half Forwards: Chad O'Sullivan, Heath Lawry, Ryan Williams
Centre Line: Cameron Faulkner, James Gowans, Leigh Westhoff
Half Backs: Adam Switala, Daniel Schell, Brad Symes
Full Backs: Andrew Hayes, Yves Sibenaler, Richard Cochrane

Rucks: Jonathon Giles, Paul Thomas, Matthew Slade

Interchange: Jason Mackenzie, Elijah Ware, Luke McCabe

Having the luxury of Justin Westhoff in the side means that we have flexibility with Havelberg should he be needed in defence, as he was in the last game against the Bays, but in saying that , I don't think Grima is playing for them so they are 1 less tall forward anyway meaning Dan will be able to stay up forward. Brad Symes just brings that bit of class and poise to the half back line and with his run and carry into the forward lines, we are much better of.

I was nervous about this game going into Saturday and now I'm really excited about our chances with a few qulity inclusions in the side. Not to forget Ryan Williams comes back in as well after missing the South game with a hammy issue. He was playing ok footy prior to that and his ability to play on the ball and in the forward lines just adds even more flexibilty to the side. I was not confident of a win prior to seeing the selected side, but now I think Centrals by 4 or 5 goals.

Just think of the quality of a side we would have when Callinan, C.Gowans and Slattery are finally available as well. Based on Justin and Brad playing for us for another few weeks, with the 3 injured players mentioned all coming back within a fortnight, we could have a side that would look something like this. Bear in mind, this side would be based on no other injuries and also like I said earlier, our AFL players staying with us for a few more weeks...

Full Forward: Daniel Havelberg, Justin Westhoff, Ian Callinan
Half Forwards: Chad O'Sullivan, Heath Lawry, Chris Gowans
Centre Line: Cameron Faulkner, James Gowans, Paul Thomas
Half Backs: Adam Switala, Daniel Schell, Brad Symes
Full Backs: Andrew Hayes, Yves Sibenaler, Richard Cochrane

Rucks: Jonathon Giles, Charles Slattery, Matthew Slade

Interchange: Jason Mackenzie, Scott Dutschke, Luke McCabe

Emergencies: (from) Lee Spurr, Leigh Westhoff, Elijah Ware, Brayden O'Hara, Luke Cowan, Earl Shaw, James Moss, Daniel Boyle, Matthew Westhoff, Ryan Williams, Louis Hadden

Wow, what an extended bench with the names on that emergency list. Will make for a pretty good base to our reserves team which I will list my best side below. Unfortunately I couldn't find room in my best 21 League side for the likes of real trier Trent Goodrem, dramatically improved Leigh Westhoff, strong marking Luke Cowan, talented Brayden O'Hara, Power players Ryan Williams and hard running Daniel Boyle, impressive debutant Matty Westhoff and the hardest choice for the bench I had to make was a toss up between Noodles and Scott Dutschke, but in the end I went with tough nut Dutschke because he is just too couragous not to have in the side where as Noodles can just be a bit too up and down at times.

My 3 final interchange players are highlighted in bold above with Buckets as back up ruckman, veteran McCabe for toughness and experience and young gun Dutschke just squeezing into the final 21. What a side, if we can maintain that kind of team (and even maybe throw in Crows ruckman Jon Griffin in there - taking Joffa Giles' spot) and we are a pretty formidiable side that would surely be pretty hard to beat as well as short priced favourites to win a 7th premiership. What are the thoughts of others on my league and reserves sides picked and what changes, if any would you make and why ? I really would not want to be a slector at this time of year, but isn't it great to see our REAL depth come through, plus how good would our reserves side be, could even beat Westies league side based on current form ???

Heres the reserves side I would pick , starting with players above who missed my league side:

Full Forward: Elijah Ware, Matthew Westhoff, Sean Brading
Half Forwards: Trent Goodrem, Luke Cowan, Ryan Williams
Centre Line: Louis Hadden, Brayden O'Hara, Leigh Westhoff
Half Backs: James Moss, Ashley Duncan, Daniel Boyle
Full Backs: Luke Barmby, Jeremy Aufderheide, Nick White

Rucks: Earl Shaw, Lee Spurr, Keiran McShane

Interchange: Brodie Hudson, Ben Woods, Joel Baldwin

Picking my best reserves side was almost as hard as picking the league side and, biy, isn't that a good looking reserves side !!?? Unfortunatley there had to be some regular players miss selection of this side but that's the way it goes. Had trouble fitting in players like Todd Whiley, Chad Obst, Ryan Porter, Kane Officer, Jayden Kelly, Gerard Mcgrath, Daniel McGee, Mathew Foldesdy, Owen Sharpe and Jaryd Cole. I hate to think how much harder it would have been if players like Chris Muslolino and Alex Stengle hadn't left the club half way through the year.

Just caught the last bit of the 5RPH SANFL show where Zac Milbank was reviewing this big clash between the Dogs and the Tigers...

They mentioned at least 2 chages for the Centrals side with Brad Symes coming back from injury with the Crows and meanwhile, Justin Westhoff coming IN after being dropped from the Power will force Luke Cowan into the reserves from the selected side mentioned on earlier posts. The BIG news on the selection front is from the Tigers point of view. I can't quote their side from one end to the other but I know they had a couple of good INS with Lachy Button on the bench and Todd Grima named at centre half forward BUT the BIG news was the OUTS for the Tigers with skipper Ben Mules and veteran defender Paul Sherwood both missing through injury as in a shoulder and concussion respectively, from memory.

The tall forward line will now seriously stretch the inexperienced and undersized Bays backline. In saying this, I have to agree with Zac Milbank who had to change his tip after seeing the final sides, now favouring the home side to get up. My feel is Centrals by 5 goals. With the weather forecast for fine conditions, it should really favour the Dogs and of course they have the mental edge over Glenelg at Elizabeth with the Tigers not winning at the Ponderosa since 1992 I think !!?? Now, I really can't wait for this game and I'm looking forward to big clash, although being a bit nervous after being "recruited" by the LifeFM team to be the "around the grounds reporter" for this game because there is no radio coverage with the ABC TV covering it.

listening to the teams i think mules & sherwood leaves a big hole in our defence, sure it gives 2 others a chance but we are talking about 2 quality players & i feel that if the middle is shared in getting it out central will kick too many goals for us, i think the rain evens it up a bit but for the bays to win we will have to win the middle at least 70%of the time

prove me wrong boys & win
i thought secret groups were a thing of the past, well not on websites anyway

Well i kind of hope he does anyway Dutchy, then hopefully he plays the 3 game minimum to qualify for finals...

I think you're wrong Dutchy, I reckon a run in the SANFL is exactly what Justin needs (and obviosuly Chocco does as well) and let's face it, thre Bays best 2 defenders are now out of this game so this will probably make his task even easier. Justin is a quality footballer and I reckon he will play really well, hopefully kicking a bag to help the Dogs get over the line and proving you wrong Dutchy...

There is a lot of emphasis about a couple of AFL players for the doggies!

If I was Roy I would start Symes off the bench as he hasn't had a run for a while and he may struggle to run out the game.

The value of Westoff is another quality big man that will be handy with the Glenelg talls. Maybe we will play one of the big guys in the backlines.

Anyway it should be a great game.
We used to be good :-(
