Wedgie, you are applying 21st century principles to the 1st century. The world did not have newspapers etc in those days to record events. Times were also worked out more by the movement of the sun and the moon than anything else.
By the way, if there were newspapers then, I am sure they would have been better than The Advertiser!

Sorry BDP, but got to agree with Wedgie. You are born on one day and die on one day. The day you die doesn't change from year to year so why should you move the celebration (if that's the right word) of it.

JTC, they do that so as to get the timing of Easter correctly. 1975 years ago (when Jesus died) they did not have the same concepts of dates as we do. Rather, they measured things by the seasons, movement of the planets etc. They celebrated the Passover on the first Sunday after the first full moon after the Equinox. Thus, although we do not know the actual date Jesus was crucified, we do know the correct timing in relation to the astronomical conditions. Hence, by observing it this way, we are observing it as closely as possible to the correct time.

OK, BDP, how come Christmas Day is the same day when it was BEFORE he died ? Not being a smart ass, just interested in how the dates can be different to the two events...

SJABC, we have no official date as to when Jesus was born. The only astronomical event we have that can help us pinpoint a date is the Star that hovered over Bethlehem. Therefore, the Church chose a date that they thought would be a close representation of that date. Today, we think that not only may we have had the wrong month for Christmas but also the wrong year. It is believed that we are four years out in its calculation.
For Easter, we do know the astronomical timing (as outlined in earlier posts).
Hoping that helps your understanding.

Same here, SJABC. Tis why I am still a practicing Catholic - if I had been any good, I would have perfected it by now and not need to practice!

Thanks for the kind words, Wedgemeister. Coming from you, they do mean a lot to me. I truly mean that as I have the utmost respect for you, your passion for North Adelaide and what you do for us through this site.

Steady on BDP, you'll be starting a Wedgmeister fan club next

BTW, I appreciate what you're saying re the easter thing, but if they can point point the day he died based on the full moon after the equinox, it wouldn't be too difficult to rewind 1975 years to establish the exact day he died.

Anyway, let's be honest, nothing we say will change what is.

True, JTC, they should be able to work out the date fairly easily. However, is there anything really wrong in having it as a moveable feast? This way it works out well and we get a four day weekend every year. Also, it is good to have Good Friday on a Friday. If we used the same date each year, we would get confused as to what to call it!
I think variety is the spice of life and don't mind the date moving - after all, it can only move 28 days maximum.

Disagree, I'd much rather have it set on the dates so we get 4 days off no matter when they fall, ie Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday would be great! :D

Might be hard for the football allocations though (particularly if spread out over the four days). Would a side play on the Saturday and then the Wednesday?

Good Friday and Christmas Day have a more reduced bus and train time table than ordinary public holidays. Which makes transport to the game a difficulty.

Wages are set at triple time for everyone that works on the day - umpires, caterers, car park attendants etc making the cost of putting it on prohibitive.

There is no alcohol service and you cant bring alcohol into Adelaide Oval so the takings for the day then reduce significantly.

With playing on Good Friday there just seems to be a whole host of problems and which most likely dont outweigh the benefits, otherwise I think that the SANFL would definatley look into it!

How does a comp like the NRL make such a success out of it then !!!

Mainly because it's the NRL and more people follow the NRL then the SANFL.

If people want football on Good Friday, then why don't they play cricket on Christmas Day then? Because they want to spend time with their families where possible, except if they tour South Africa, NZ or here.
