But he plays the role which enables him to pick up 30 possesions a game which is what wins the Magarey unfortunatley. After watching again against the dogs, I still have question marks over his effectiveness and foot skills but this rarely counts on vote night. He won't get many other midfielders stealing votes at North either, they don't have to many other high possesion midfielders.

Crap - here is the relevant stats of North's top possession gatherers compared to Centrals (as they are the best team in the league) at the end of the minor round!

Possession Leaders (as at end of the minor round)

Centrals
Slade 437 21.9 per game
J. Gowans 389 19.5
C. Gowans 375 19.8

Symes 358 25.6

North
Allan 527 27.7 per game
Younie 416 19.8

Ivens 389 21.6
Howard 387 19.4

I have highlighted the 3 midfielders from each side - Symes and Ivens both defenders off the half back flank so they are not in bold.

Yep, North have no other midfielders other than Allan!
I think you missed his point slightly and then proved it.

Your stats show Allan is a clear standout amongst Norths on ball brigade and Centrals are more evenly spread.

I don't think he missed the point at all, I think you did.
whufc said that North don't have "too many other high possession midfielders" and he proved quite convincingly with stats that we do.

Fair enough if you want to discuss how Central have a more even spread of possession getters, he didn't argue with that he merely dispelled the myth that noone else in North's midfield get touches.

Relatively speaking, Allan craps over the rest of Norths on ballers. I reckon that's the point whufc was trying to make. By not taking every letter posted literally I was able to interpret this.

Fair enough if that's the case mate, but Allan would crap over any team's on ballers if he was in any team, he's just that good.
I'm not a mind reader so like BRBRBP I can only go on what he whufc said, not what he was trying to say.
I never assume anything as we all know the end result of that.

I'm not sure what assumption would need to be made to get a logical interpretation.

"Not too many other high possession winners".

High = 27.7 possessions per game (North have one).

Average = 19-21 possession per game (North have 2, Dogs have 3).

It's not rocket science.

How can Centrals be more evenly spread than North when two of Centrals average 19 per game and so do two of North's - that leaves the two biggest possession getters from each side with Allan clearly ahead of Slade!

whufc didn't do his home work before making his original claim and now I can't believe your trying to justify his arguement / claim with your logic (or lack of it???)

Thats exactly what i meant but it didn't come across right.

Allen averages 8 more possesions a game than his nearest team mate, where at Centrals there are 3 players who are within 2 possesions a game of each other.

The Central players will more than likely steal votes of each other but at North, Allen is clearly there biggest ball magnet.

I hope that clears it up

Okay we got it now! Did look like you were down playing the other North midfielders overall. I think Allan will be our biggest vote getter (or should be at least) although Howard may suprise in some games even though I thought last year he was better but his numbers stack up pretty well again. The trouble is he and Younie both do the hard in and under stuff that often gets missed by umpires and media scribes when they hand out 3-2-1 for the best players each week.

I think Symes will suprise and not only be the top Centrals vote getter but in the top 3 along with Crane and Allan.

Given Rick MacGowan's outstanding performance as a first Season Senior Coach, it would be more than appropriate for a Sturt player to win this coveted award.

I would have thought that Brant's outstanding 106 goals in 20 Minor Round Games; Luke's loyalty to Sturt as the recruit of the Year and Jade's total loyalty to the Double Blue Jumper until 2009, would ensure a Sturt player is deservedly crowned the Best Player in the 2007 SANFL Season :) :)

A three way tie is appropriate.

Don't be modest SP, we all hope its a 36 way tie between all the players that have played for Sturt this year, that would be the only just and fair result.

Sportsbeat's (CK) preview of the Medal was out yesterday. Looks like he agrees with BPBRB and SturtPeter:

What a load of crap! Anyone would think MacGowan has done something out of the ordinary this year! Jarman took North from 1 win in 2003 to a 4th spot finish in his first year in 2004 but that didn't entitle any North player to win it that year (which they didn't obviously)!

It would be appropriate for the best player in 2007 to win the medal not someone from Sturt becuase they had a reasonable year!

The Sturt team poster on your bedroom wall is going to be "well worn" by the time the summer is over SP!
