Where do I begin! I'll say that I am mighty relieved to come away with a point, because at least we can take something into next week, rather than had the siren gone two seconds later, we would have gone into next week with a shattering loss.
It is just another quirk in that the only two draws we have been involved in 17 seasons have come against the same team at the same venue; the other draw in 1993. Mind you though, it was a fitting result for two teams who demonstrated at times just how damaging they can be, when on fire.
There were so many chances missed by the Eagles in the first 2 and a half quarters, by not allowing for the breeze, twice passing it to an unmarked player in the goalsquare, only for it to miss the target and roll on for a behind. The behind which clicked Glenelg into action I thought was the miss by Cooper only 25 out on the right side to allow for the breeze, but sprayed it badly. The score at that stage was 6.13 to 6.2. 12 or so minutes later Glenelg were 21 points up and with the breeze to come in the last. McConnell showed why he is 2nd on the goal table, and he would be closer to Chambers if he was more a permanent full forward. Bays fans can correct me, but I think that he does play up the ground a bit as well.
At that stage, I thought we were gone for all money. But this Eagles side does not give in!
Two goals, brought the margin back to 9 points at three quarter time. I still thought Glenelg would win, however again, the belief of the Eagles players saw the lead regained with another two goals - 10.13 to 11.4. Then, yet again, another challenge from Glenelg wrestled back the lead and it got out to 13 points. Again though, we did not surrender. Schwarze, who to me was a key in saving the game, took another strong mark and goaled. He had another mark, but this time kicked a behind, that was his only behind for the match. It's funny how a run of behinds can turn into a run of goals, as the score went from 6.13 to 12.13, before that miss.
Then, Vince levelled the scores, this time getting a favourable couple of bounces. Scores level with only a minute or so to play, but for all supporters at the ground, it was heart in mouth when Mahoney gathered the ball about 20 out in front. Then the siren! Unbelievable match, I want to thank both clubs supporters who came out today, because we saw a great game of SANFL, which was also another fantastic advert for the game on TV.
Both sides put on a great display of football, and it comes as no surprise to me that Glenelg look every bit as dangerous as their form suggests.
